Despite the pain from the Threadscore, both T'roi and Destrieth were feeling great about how they were doing. The bronze weyrling flamed another clump of Thread, a large one, and he bugled his pride as the silvery menace blew away as ash. Zadelraheth! You are doing well, my brother! he called out to the brown who was fighting Thread nearby. For his part, T'roi waved at Fe'ral and gave him a snappy salute of encouragement. They were representing themselves very well indeed today!

16. Things start off slow, but you manage to catch a few strands of Thread. For the most part, you realize that things seem to be a mix of quiet followed by moments of stress. You catch a solid tangle, but another few strands fall through. You find it's tricky when there are entire groups falling overhead together, and you find yourself struggling to make the right choice on what to catch. In one instance, you almost singe a wingmate by forgetting your airspace. Rookie mistake! [roll 1]

T'roi was beginning to come to the realization that fightingThread was equal parts nothing and sheer stress. You were either waiting for Thread to appear, or you were in a fight for your life trying to flame it. He nodded to himself and made a point to remember that so he wouldn't allow a sense of complacency to settle in and make him careless.

Speaking of careless... Several clumps appeared at once, and he found himself having to quickly decide which to flame. "That one! Go!" he ordered Destrieth, and the big bronze obeyed, banking hard and flaming the thread -- and barely avoiding charring a felllow weyrling who was attacking the same clump! T'roi felt horribly embarrassed as Destrieth wheeled away. That was an avoidable error, and a beginner's mistake too.

Your adrenaline is pumping and you feel fit to fight! Whatever fears or worries you have, you’re absolutely ready to take the world by storm. Your dragon wheels and dives, and you wind up successfully flaming some strands. Of course, you also find yourself suddenly dangling in some mighty precarious positions as your dragon avoids getting smacked by a tangle of Thread. The straps you so valiantly worked on are the only thing keeping you from plummeting to your death. Let’s hope Thread doesn’t latch onto those thick leathers… and if they do, that your backup security straps work! Thankfully, as the fight continues, you focus on what’s important--flaming down Thread. If brown or bronze, you play a bit of hero. Knowing your dragon should be able to take a hit, you can Self-Sacrifice. Quote a wingmate and take their damage instead. While it may hurt you, it also means you were able to save the day.

It was time to let one of the other bronzeriders take up the calls and the lackluster last call he'd made had left a bitter taste in his mouth, leaving him wanting. He could shoulder his burdened feelings, certainly, but - There will be more opportunities - Argamath and His will do well, and D'rok clearly needed the time to settle how it had felt for a little while before he went at it again. Another bad call could come from being too pressured and it was better for the young man to ease his way in.

Now, at least, they could focus on flaming and fighting. D'rok had every ounce of faith in his straps, but he'd not quite been ready for how much rolling they were going to be put through and he reflexively gripped them with his hands as well as clenched his legs against his dragon's hide, as though either of these things would help if he got shaken loose. The wind whipping through his hair was thrilling, though, and he'd ride that high a little longer once they'd evened out a little more.

Another stone delivery and D'rok was already preparing his throwing arm to hopefully toss more true this time...

Unfortunately, it once again took him multiple tries to pass off the stone and D'rok couldn't help but wonder if there were Queens below getting irritated at falling bags of stone coming from his poor tosses. Maybe Dehka will help me practice my throws later. he thought to himself with a frown. Clearly, he needed to.

Someone call you butter, because you’re on a roll! Not only do you manage to flame down every target you go after, but formation changes are a breeze. Honestly, you’re feeling mighty proud of yourself and your dragon right now. Unfortunately, your luck doesn’t hold as the fighting carries on. One minute you were flying high, and the next minute something… something suddenly isn’t right. Oh no! You feel one of your straps begin to loosen. Did you not pull it tight enough? Was it a flaw in the design? Is it just bad luck!? While you’re okay for now, any jarring motions or wheels and dives make you feel just a little more closer to slipping off and out.

Khazariath may not have been a speedy blue or green, but D'rok was enjoying the speed and grace with which his dragon moved to flame down Thread and dodge out of the way. The tumbles and rolls were feeling more natural now and his nerves had settled just enough to-

"Woah!" D'rok didn't much enjoy the involuntary slide of his position, jerking off to one side harder than he'd been expecting. While he withheld any sheer panicked response, he was quick to check over his straps to see if they'd been hit and that had been the cause. It wasn't his craftsmanship - they'd been checked obsessively, after all. Perhaps he'd not pulled them tight enough, and briefly he wondered if he could do that from this position.

11. Ouch, ouch, ouch, and more ouch. When it rains it pours, or so the saying goes, and while some of your wingmates might be in relatively quiet airspace, the wind keeps kicking Thread into yours! While you and your dragon flame and char the ancient enemy, it unfortunately doesn’t leave you unscathed.
You and your dragon are blown right into a large patch that wraps itself around you both. While you think jumping Between isn’t going to be an issue, the pain has you screaming in panic. The leathers you wear don’t seem to protect for long and you struggle to visualize where to go Between. Damage -10 HP

This wind is--it's a pain, isn't it? Ka'ia was struggling to fight against it, and he knew full well that Argamath was doing the same. They were doing alright, as far as he could tell, even with the gusts buffeting them from every side--Argamath was flaming anything that came in reach, and although he may have missed a toss of stone here and there due to the wind, Ka'ia was landing them at a reasonable enough pace.
If I was just--perhaps a bit bigger--maybe like Destrieth... I don't think we'd be having this much trouble.
You still have time to fill out, love. You'll get there.

If they thought they'd gotten through the worst of the wind, however, they were quickly proven wrong. It took Argamath by complete surprise, a sudden gust of far sharper intensity swinging in from the side and throwing them off balance--Ka'ia himself barely had a moment to register what they were sent flying toward before they hit it, and his world erupted into white-hot pain.
Thread. Not a small clump of it, either; this was much more significant than he'd thought.

It burned. His leathers held for a few moments, but panic gripped him as he felt the clump begin to eat through them, too--Argamath's screech of pain had his heart in his throat, but it was so hard to focus with this much agony needling away at his nerves. They had to get between--there was no other way. Could he even come up with coordinates right now, though?
Either-- Either you try, or we're eaten alive. No pressure! Argamath's mindvoice was strained, although he still tried to maintain his usual civility; it was that little fact that finally sent Ka'ia over the edge. The coordinates he scraped together were (hopefully) just for a few feet back, not all that far out of formation at all--Argamath was more than happy to oblige, and the frozen blanket of between wrapped around them both.

One.
The strands of thread were already freezing, crumbling into dust and flaking away--it wasn't quite all of it yet, but the relief was practically palpable.

Two.
Bit by bit, the cold began to seep in, finding purchase in the new holes in his leathers. He could feel the strands that had gotten a little deeper begin to die, and his revulsion made his stomach turn.
Any better?
Much, actually.

Three.
Okay. Okay, they should--they should be fine now.

Four...?
s**t.

All at once, they slip back out of between, the sudden wave of color and sound of the skies around them immediately assaulting their senses. Ka'ia gasped for breath, reaching up to adjust his goggles--that had felt far too close, and he hated it.
We likely needed it. To-- To kill the rest of it. Even Argamath sounded a little shaken, although the Bronze wouldn't admit it to anyone else. Ka'ia hated hearing that note in his lifemate's voice, and he bit down on his lip, willing himself to focus. Back in the fight, though. We've much to go still.

Back in the fight, indeed.
Even with their all too fresh injuries screaming against them, Ka'ia and Argamath knew they had to push on. The adrenaline of--no, not that, they hadn't come close to that--of being hit at all had filled them with a new strength, albeit one that was a little desperate. They returned to formation without complaint, pushing themselves onward. Ka'ia was at least glad to note that his straps were intact, especially seeing as they were being put through their paces with all of Argamath's fancy flying; still, he made a note to check them over when they got back on the ground, just in case any strands had gotten anywhere he hadn't noticed.

For the sake of their classmates, however, Argamath knew what he had to do. Now wasn't the time to show weakness, even bloodied as they may be--they had to remain strong, and prove to the rest of them that they couldn't be stopped by something like thread. This time, when another bigger clump comes their way, he turns smoothly, ignoring the pain outright to turn the clot of thread into little more than ash, drifting down to Pern below. The slight falter he made upon returning to formation was a bit less triumphant, but he bugled nonetheless, sending his confidence out to the rest of his siblings.
They'd get through this yet. Not a one of them would be brought low--not here, not now.

Fighting Thread isn't a problem. Ever vigilant, you spot a weyrling in trouble and sweep in to make the save. Quote a weyrling and save them from damage!

For a moment, it almost surprises Ka'ia how natural this all feels--sure, he's currently bleeding, and his shoulder in particular feels as though it's on fire, but when it's time for him to step up and relay orders, it simply clicks. Between the two of them, they're keeping an eye on everyone they can, and when one of their fellow weyrlings comes much too close to danger for their comfort, they're quick to act; Ka'ia's quite glad that Argamath's flame reaches as long as it does, especially when it finds its mark and burns another clump of thread before it can take hold on someone else.

Eyes up, Maestoth. Argamath was only a bit smug as he reached out to his...favorite sibling, eyes whirling. Even still, he hadn't hesitated to act--letting anyone be harmed under his watch would be utterly shameful, even if it was Maestoth. I need you in top shape.

The wind was quite fierce at times, and while Maestoth as yet had no trouble holding his position, the gusts were kicking a lot of Thread his way. As he flamed another tangle, a word from a certain someone immediately set him to bristling - but did buy him enough time to duck out of danger.

I am always in top shape, whether you need me to be or not, he snapped back, irritated by even the slightest implication that Argamath was in any way in command of him.

For awhile, things were actually...fairly quiet, and they were relatively free of even windblown strands, leaving Maestoth ample time to stew over being aided by a certain someone. Quite frankly, he'd really rather have endured the injury.

Quote:

1. Things are actually quiet. Very quiet. In fact, you find yourself flying mostly dead space. Nothing seems to come your way and you find yourself thinking a lot. Just you and your thoughts. Is this really Threadfall? Somehow you thought it was going to be a lot more dangerous, or at least, with less time to think. Things do pick up with a few gusts and you and your dragon manage to flame down some stray Thread successfully, without missing any filaments. Yes! Not too bad at all!
