I'm quarter German. My Grandmother's maiden name is Schaeffer. My Grandmother's family fled to Switzerland when the Nazi party started rising to power. Once the visas were cleared, they came over to England, where my great-grandad was promptly arrested and put in prison.

That left my Great-grandmother effectively living as a single German mother in London during World War II. I hate to think what that must have been like.

So... um... how did this come up?

No idea, actually. Ask Wodewose. That comment did seem to be a bit of a non-sequiteur.

I suspect I have a bit of German or Austrian in me, just very diluted.

I should ask my grandparents, they managed to trace our family tree way back (though I'm unfortunatly not a blood realtive of Jon Dowland the composer. Sodding adoption)

It's from the idea that the Queen is partly German.

Though really, she's about as German as a Cumberland sausage.

It is probably lucky that our monarchy are not all haemophiliac.

That is all I have to say...

What does that have to do with the conversation? And the Queen is VERY German. The royal family was Sax-Coberg until WWII, and the one who abdicated to marry an American was a supporter of Hitler.

Supporter of Hitler in which respects, though, eh?

In that he supported his ideas, not that he stopped him from falling!
