Well, if L wasn't in deathnote, I don' think that the anime/manga would be near as good as it is, and I think that it wouldn't have as much as a structure of storyline, but I guess that would go with Mello (with this all being hypothetical) because he's pretty awesome too. He's not anywhere close to the awesomeness of L, but still cool.
