Ooh, or living images of the night. Like a picture of the moon and it chases you. Or just embodiments of darkness.
Like zombies. Only without the flesh, or the hunger for brains. And possibly the ability to think. And probably would just go after people hungering for the warmth that they cannot create themselves.

You know it could be to immobilize the enemy, instead of attacking them, so that he can attack it when it's immbobilized.
