1: A military troll ropes you into helping them measure the quality of the soil in the area. It basically just involves you stabbing a giant metal rod into the ground over and over while they fiddle with a beeping display. Fun!

Load gaper block officially taken care of, Apibom returned the cleaning supplies to the closet. They hadn't overheard anything useful at all... Anxiety was starting to creep into the back of their mind. What if they didn't find anything useful at all for Chiara? Or figure anything out for themself while they were helping around the grounds?

They were pulled out of their train of thought by an older troll summoning them to help with... soil quality. Wow. Okay. They were happy to oblige, but once they learned what the task actually was they were less than enthused. This... left plenty of time for them to think. Great.

This was okay. They'd... they'd just have more time to think up a plan for themself. Tomorrow, they'd get a better duty. Or maybe they'd approach one of the trolls Chiara wanted information on and ask to team up? It had looked like they were allowed to form groups. Who were they kidding- they weren't spy material at all. Chiara had waaaay too much faith in them. Then again she might be the only troll that did have faith in them. They couldn't let her down...

The task seemed to drag on forever with their thoughts swarming in their head the whole time. When it was finally done they felt absolutely exhausted. Maybe tomorrow would be better...

5: You spend the night aiding in the construction of scaffolding around the platform's docking station. Navigating the vertical labyrinth of platforms is harrowing, but view from up here is great.

Floren had hoped he'd get a different task on the following night, but it seemed that they needed more help with the scaffolding again. Ah well, he'd gotten into a nice rhythm before, he could do it again. Skoli would just have to deal with not being able to 'hear' him for most of the night again. He had explained to his lusus that there were many trolls around that likely wouldn't allow a fight to break out (after all, fighting volunteers delayed progress!) but it hadn't quelled his lusus' fears. He supposed he could understand it. A lusus' job was to worry about their charge, after all.

This time he navigated the maze of beams with more ease, though still found it a little difficult to get to the top. This time it seemed he had another troll in his group that didn't have any experience with scaffolding. Though he was but a novice himself, Floren took it upon himself to give advice to the other troll here and there when he saw them making mistakes. This made the night go by much faster, though he noticed it impacted his productivity... Perhaps that was why the group he was with the night before was not so keen to stop and help him.

Honestly the general attitude around helping others being a bad thing was confusing to him. Sure, to an extent it was a good idea to let others fend for themselves so they'd toughen up. But when it benefited the group to teach a less experienced troll, surely the most logical option would be to impart knowledge onto them. While everyone seemed to be working in good cooperation to get their tasks completed, it seemed that perhaps the lack of interest in assisting newbies to the tasks would slow the whole thing down. Then again permanently assigning people to duties might discourage them from showing up. Eventually everyone would be shifted around, right? They'd all get a nice well-rounded experience with helping to build the launch pads. So perhaps speed would pick up later. They did have time.

He wondered if the trolls in charge of detonating or landing the ships were dealing with such problems. Did they have many inexperienced fighters? Would they slow down the groups? They had allowed trolls to sign up on the spot to join the military - were those trolls given a crash course on fighting before they were launched into space? Did they even have time?

Ah- he was getting off track. He needed to focus on the task at hand, and not let himself get distracted by thoughts of what others might be struggling with. Things would work out in the end, as they always did. Even if it was a little rough around the edges. It was one of the positives about trolls in general- when put to a task, it would be completed one way or another. Or end disastrously, but he wasn't going to think about that. Nope. At the end of the night, he crawled back down to the ground, feeling a little less tired than the night before after all the hard work. Perhaps he was getting stronger!

WITH A RUMBLE, AND A CREAK ... SITE ALPHA 2B HAS LAUNCHED IT'S DOCK INTO SPACE!

4. A minor emergency causes all of you to stop what you’re doing and assist in sudden recalibration and fixing of the site.

Wallas had decided to work at site Beta 2A; it seemed to be in need of a little patching up so that it would launch on time. After hearing the particular duties that the Lightseekers members would have to carry out, he felt a bit uneasy. Would it really be okay to put transmitters into the important space things? If it was really just for atmospheric weather monitoring, that would be fine, but it felt a little dangerous. Tampering with official government things was not exactly Wallas's style, and he was hoping up and down that he wouldn't get caught and culled. Or, worse yet, everyone could be culled. Panili was young and lowblooded like he was, and he doubted that she would get any mercy if her machinations were uncovered and deemed unacceptable. The stakes were pretty high, and he wasn't feeling so sure that the Lightseekers' pie-in-the-sky motivations were worth the risk anymore. Still, he'd attended the meeting and signed up for these tasks, so he was going to have to do his duties. Nothing to do but do his best.

The site was a bit more than halfway set up; it was good that he was getting something of a boost and could just dive right in. He did his best to appear unobtrusive and hide his transmitters, and he thought it was working out. No one in particular had come to pick on him, so that was good. Everything seemed to be going swimmingly until suddenly, a loud rumble and crash-bang noise resounded through the area. Something had clearly gone awry somewhere at the site, and now everyone was scurrying frantically to fix the mystery problem. Sucking in a breath, Wallas ran over to where he thought the initial sound came from. He ended up finding a heap of collapsed material stacks, and he set about trying to organize and group everything up so that it would be easy to re-stack everything. Sometimes it wasn't clear which things should have gone in which piles, but after a while, he thought he had things put together decently. Soon, he had all the stacks put away, and that seemed to clear things up enough for everyone to go back to work. Not bad work, really.

5. Sideways glances from the ground crew means that you have to retreat and try to install your tech later.

With the issue of the resource stacks solved, Wallas went back to work. He had a funny feeling that the delays caused by installing the transmitters were definitely noticeable, and he tried to step up the pace while remaining discreet. Still, he was becoming increasingly concerned that others were looking at him to try and figure out what was causing the delay, and he didn't want to draw too much attention, lest the mission become compromised. Which would be safer: continuing to work so as not to stand out, or temporarily retreating so that the other workers could turn their attention elsewhere? Both options seemed to have obvious drawbacks, but he was more likely to be caught if he stuck around, so perhaps excusing himself quickly would do the trick. "I'll be right back," he mumbled, scuttling off like he had to use the load gaper super super quick. Those kinds of breaks were permissible, right?

8. There are too many hands on transmitter installing, so you get the chance to operate a crane!

Dairah decided to work at site Alpha 1C; it seemed to be approaching completion, and its launch time was creeping up, so she figured she could help there. The notion of installing transmitters made her pause a little, but not that much. If these were really just for weather monitoring and communication, that would be fine. In fact, that would be helpful to her personally, in case any anomalies got in the way of her farming processes. It never hurt to stay informed, after all. The Lightseekers seemed to be a peculiar little network with lofty ideals that would be good for business, and Dairah felt mostly fine with that. The remainder that wasn't fine was mostly concerned about direct meddling with the technology and the possible consequences of that. Still, the duties could be worse. She had a feeling that she knew how to plug the transmitters in and make them do their thing, so she was good to go.

At least, that was what she thought she was going to do. Somehow, there were a lot of people already installing the transmitters (she guessed that was a consequence of starting slightly late), so she got pulled aside to do a miscellaneous task. Said task ended up being operating a crane, and Dairah felt her anxiety spike at the notion of having to do such a thing. She kept asking, "Are you sure you really want me to do this?" but it seemed that there was no way out of it. Fortunately, she was given a decent amount of guidance, and no one ended up splattered due to crane mishaps. Thank goodness. In any case, Dairah was not sure she wanted to work heavy construction equipment again any time soon. Intuitive controls or no, heavy machinery was just not her thing. No thanks, she'll just stay with the handiwork, please and thank you...

2. You notice one of the transmitters is making a funny noise when you shake it, so you go to get it fixed. You help replace the pretty pink power core – tingly! Back to work.

Now that she could get back to the transmitter installation, Dairah followed instructions and set about doing just that. As she set about installing transmitters, she thought she heard a weird noise when she picked up one. Curiously, she waved the thing back and forth, and the noise continued. To confirm, she gave it a shake, and the strange noise became particularly loud: a sort of fizzy buzzy popping noise. This sounded like a problem, so she went to one of the higher ups, who swiftly diagnosed the problem as a faulty power core. The device was opened up, and the core was a very pretty shade of pink. The higher-up in question instructed Dairah in replacing the power core; the energy inside it gave her a tingly feeling when she touched it, which was equal parts alarming and intriguing. Just what was in these cores, anyway? She couldn't help but feel surprised that she was being dragged to do all these tech things. Yes, it was part of the duties, but she wasn't the most tech-inclined troll around.

Once that snafu was taken care of, Dairah went back to work and clicked the transmitter into place. There was a certain relief in defusing a potential problem before it occurred; if that faulty transmitter had launched with the rest of the tech, it could have caused quite a number of problems. Aside from not allowing the Lightseekers' functions to go off properly, it could also make discovery and dangerous consequences that much closer. She hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Day 3
Site: Beta 2A

1.An un-affiliated member of the ground crew asks what you’re doing, and you’ve got to weasel your way out of being caught with your 1) comeback 2) badge flashing 3) explanation 4) various scientific jargon.

Tsarzi had split off from the group she’d been with for the time being. She planned to go back and continue working with them and Wander and Froggy had asked after construction know how, which she was more than willing to share. A curiosity she could solidly approve of and encourage. Trolls could be quite fickle things, wanting to be coddled or danced around. They wanted fluff in their dialogue, often wasting time and potential. Working with the Lightseekers she’d been getting a lot of experience working with others and found that not all of them wanted to learn. Not all of them could handle the truth being laid out so plainly or that finding out their small talk was not worth the time. Cooperation was a hit and miss and Tsarzi had little patience to try and cater to the whims of others.

So it was pleasant to encounter Wander and Froggy who were nervous and shy, but asked for help and wanted to learn and do better. That insecurity was not helping them, but as long as it did not debilitate them, as long as they could manage it, it was fine. It would be better if they could push past it altogether, but in her experience with some of the volunteers at the Lightseekers Settlement, telling them that when they halted altogether didn’t seem to work. She’d prefer not to have to leave them behind. They showed promise in looking to better themselves, Tsarzi would like if it stayed that way.

As it was, she had split off temporarily to look for somewhere to install a transmitter on the Beta 2A site. Panili had made clear that while what they were doing was not illegal, it was somewhat questionable. They had a permissible amount of clearance, but likely not enough to stand up to a true crackdown. Which was ridiculous. This was data, so much logged and stored date that if poured over could tell a great many things about environmental shifts and effects, long term information that the military was going to just destroy. Absolutely idiotic. Wasting a perfectly good resource that was just sitting there, waiting to be mined.

Trolls. They could be so wasteful.

Tsarzi avoided the main thoroughfare of workflow, taking some back routes around supply crates and supplies being bound for transport. There was a spot back here that had been marked previously as an ideal fringe spot to set up.

Tsarzi got back there fine and was about to set about her task when she was interrupted.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

Tsarzi craned her neck around to stare blandly at the crackly voiced acne ridden teenager that had interrupted her. He was a bit stringy, fidgeting form one foot to the other and giving her a rather worried frown. She’d been caught, it would do little good to install the transmitter right here now, where someone could vouch that they’d seen her doing it. There was an acceptable range of deviation from the marked spots, so this could be salvaged, though irritating it needed salvaging at all. She could likely find another spot tucked away behind the supply depot back here if she could get rid of him.

She raised both eyebrows at him pointedly.

“My job,” she said, staring him down. He seemed to fidget more and began stepping closer to try and peer at what she was doing. In response she stood up too, planting herself in a way that kept the transmitter mostly out of sight without obviously hiding it with her body.

“This doesn’t look like a job I heard about anyone getting. Should you even be back here kid?” He stopped when she stood up, frowning a little more, seemingly torn between suspicion and indecision.

“That’s probably because you weren’t assigned to it. They don’t waste time informing the help of every job being done, they just expect us to do it,” Tsarzi explained curtly. The rapt and unwavering response seemed to throw the teen. He didn’t look completely discouraged yet though and Tsarzi was not here to fool around with this.

“Go back to your job so I can go back to mine,” She snapped, turning back to keep working on the transmitter.

“I-uh. I. I guess,” The teen muttered, sounding unsure, and Tsarzi went through the motions as though setting something up until the sound of footsteps disappeared. Time to pack up and find somewhere else then. Best for there to be nothing here if the teen came back.

1: You help guide the machine towing the platform using brightly glowing sticks. You wave them around yourself in graceful arcs, helping them back up to place their load. It's sorta fun.

The next station was almost complete! Surely they must be making record time. And no one seemed to have had any major accidents, at least not to Floren's knowledge. He still hadn't gotten the chance to shadow Etet, but he supposed there was still plenty of time for that. As he approached the roster to see what his duty for the night would be this time, he half expected it to be more scaffolding work but was pleasantly surprised when it was not, in fact, more scaffolding. Apparently he was to help guide machines towing platforms into place. This seemed like it would be a lot less strenuous but also... like it might have a higher chance for being boring. Oh well, he could make it fun.

He approached the group of trolls in charge of handling out the glow sticks for guiding and flashed his I.D. badge to get a pair of his own. Sticks in hand, he made his way toward the area the towing machines would be headed to. His suspicions were correct- the task was pretty mindless when there weren't any machines around to direct. He distracted himself with waving the sticks in what he thought was creative arcs for a little while, but eventually grew bored. Was there not anything else to do?

He had no sooner finished the thought when another machine arrived. Sighing, he went about waving them into place, careful not to get himself run over. A few of the drivers did not seem to know what they were doing - if he was not careful, they would definitely squash him before they knew what they were doing. He had made a mental note not to tell Skoli about that part. His lusus was glad he was working on the ground again, but he definitely did not need to know that being on the ground came with the risk of getting run over by some dumb a** driving a machine they probably did not have a license to drive.

No he would have to find other things to tell his lusus about his night. Maybe he would regale Skoli with his observations of others passing through the area. He had seen a few trolls slip in an oil spill and almost take each other out on the way down. That had been pretty funny. A part of him had hoped that at least one of the trolls would need some medical assistance but it seemed they were both just fine and ended up walking away from the ordeal unharmed, just perturbed and very oily. Eventually someone came along to clean up the mess before anyone else tripped. Just his luck.

There was also a kid that looked lost for a good twenty minutes that he'd seen just wandering around aimlessly. He had almost abandoned his post to go tell them they needed to start helping or go back to their hive, but decided that it was not his place and besides... If he left his post, a machine might arrive that needed direction and would not have it.

      â…ˇ Autumn Vikare

Leaning over Selune's shoulder in the thick of a crowd, Autumn traced her finger down the timesheet. “You'll want to fill that part in right there,” she said. She pointed at an empty box with a golden fingernail. Lowering her voice she spoke directly into the greenblood's spongeclot. “It's okay to take a few minutes off your time. No one will notice and it will work better for us in the long run, hm?~” Autumn pulled back and offered the girl a crafty smile. Selune would shape up to be a proper rebel in no time with her guidance.

On Selune's other shoulder perched Caterpal, bored to sleep by the current task. He had much preferred the work Autumn had assigned to him two nights prior. Piloting the forklift had been fun and entertaining. Paperwork on the otherhand was boring. Several discarded acid burned copies of the time tables were a testament to his feelings. His tiny little body twitched as he let out a sleepy hiccup.

After reviewing Selune's work, Autumn went over her own, double checking her numbers. She had gone over everything twice already but it could not hurt to check again and... ah! She scribbled out a number and filled it in with another. Work time maximised. No gaps.

      â–ł Kerras Farron

The package of explosives crunched onto the ground.

Standing wide-eyed in the lawnring outside the hive, Kerras looked on in horror at the ensuing squabble. Not that it could even be called a squabble. The drones had the lowblood easily outnumbered. She never stood a chance. Even so, she bit and clawed at the drones in a desperate attempt to escape. She nearly broke free when one cuffed her across the back of the head. Suddenly, the lowblood went limp. It was all too much for Kerras.

They pulled their hood up around their face to hide. Their pump biscuit raced in their chest. Malice. Where was Malice? Frantic, they searched the demolition site for the blueblood with wild eyes. Not there... not there... not there either. Their hands trembled. She had disappeared. Abandoning the dangerous package in the grass, Kerras fled to the nearest figure, and threw their arms around them, shaking like an autumn leaf.

[Rolling Wallas, Beta 2C]

Quote:
4. You read the documentation that Shenso has very carefully created about the inner workings of the transmitters and proper installation techniques.

The next night, Wallas decided to go over to the fresh site of Beta 2C. There was still a decent amount of time till the scheduled launch date, but it never hurt to get a head start. He figured that his technical aptitude (what existed of it right now, anyway) would help get the sites off to a good start. In any case, the very start of any project could be a bit nervewracking, so he paused to familiarize himself with what he was doing a bit more.

That Shenso fellow over at the Lightseekers had provided documentation for the transmitters, and while Wallas had read it to make sure he was installing them properly in the first place, it seemed that he had some time to delve deeper while everything was being set up. He got settled and began to look over his copy of the documentation. The immediate feeling was a sense of "oh no I am in way over my head, what does this even mean." There was a lot of high-tech jargon in place, and while Wallas knew his technology, he wasn't quite at that level yet. Eventually, though, after a few read-throughs of the opening paragraph, he became able to guess what the different terms were from context. That wasn't quite as good as knowing 100% what the terms meant, but maybe he could ask around for further information.

Furthermore, everything appeared to be very organized and well diagrammed out. The majority of mechanisms surrounded a pink power core, which was interesting in itself. What was in made of? Probably Unobtainium or McGuffinite, if Wallas had to guess. (He was making crap up, obviously.) In any case, the extra information on installing the transmitters was also very helpful. He had done it right up to this point, but it never hurt to review and make absolutely sure that everything was good to go. Practice made perfect, and caution made... safety, or something.

[Wallas, Beta 2C, part 2]

Quote:
7. You assist Malory and Loulah and the other ground crew members in determining the appropriate amount of explosives needed to detonate certain objects. Sounds fun, but is mostly math.

The next stop for Wallas at site Beta 2C was helping Malory and Loulah sort out matters with explosives. Now, explosives were an exciting prospect for just about any troll (right?), but this was the technical back end of explosives. Most people got to see the glorious front end, where the big boom did its thing, or the intriguing middle end, where explosive compounds were mixed together and whatnot. The back end was indeed mostly math and a slice of chemistry. Chemistry was a little out of Wallas's comfort zone, but math was required for a decent amount of programming and robotics, so he was willing to flex his mental muscles for that.

Between the math required for this job and reading Shenso's documentation, Wallas thought he was legitimately getting smarter from all this work. The thinkpan was sizzling, you might say. Fortunately, he didn't feel like smoke was going to come out of his head any time soon. This was stimulating, this was his element! Even if he wouldn't get to see the big boom, he would have been a part of making it happen, and that excited him. Even with his earlier misgivings about what he was doing for the Lightseekers, he had a feeling he was getting awesome experience from this work. It might even look good on a resume, or something like that. He could picture it now: "performed extensive calculations regarding explosives for ground crew project; became knowledgeable of documentation of important technology." Granted, he'd never be able to say what important technology, and he'd probably never get a reference from the Lightseekers (maybe?), but it was a fun thought. Progress! He had a feeling this would get him places. Maybe.
