I think they started to develop his character better later on
and they got more used to his expressions and personality.

I either didn't notice this or didn't absorb it the first time around, but I reread volume 3 recently, and L was shaking and gripping his knees closer to his face after Ukita-san's death. I think they wiped L of all emotion later on. And fanfiction certainly makes L out to be absolutely emotionless (not that it really matters much since we're talking about canon things)
Are there any other examples out there?
I noticed that this morning when I was rereading the third volume!
Though, I couldn't tell if he was scared because Aizawa was manhandling him or if he felt bad about what's-his-name dying...
And I have an example too. I don't remember what volume it's in (first or second) but L puts all the notes from the prisoners together, (L, did you know that reapers love apples?) realizes it's pretty much a useless hint, and gets angry. He clenchles his teeth and says "Damn you Kira!"
