I'm sad to say that I would love any book to death if it's got good eye candy and that would all it would need. I can go with both extremities, though. I love fanfictions, there are no pictures involved. And I can pick up a doujinshi that has not been translated yet if the artwork is breath taking enough.

As someone who likes to draw and one day wants to make comics for a living, I'm firmly of the opinion that you should NOT sacrifice the story for the art. A comicer is first and foremost a storyteller, and if you cheap out on the story people can tell. It really annoys me when comic artists do that. (When it's a comic written and drawn by the same person.)
Basically, a comic is something where you have to combine the art and the writing to tell a story. They don't exist independently of each other, they're dependent on each other to tell the story. Good writing and good art work together to tell a good story, and to give us something pleasing to the eye. One can partially support the other when one's a little weak, but even great art can't save bad writing, though I think good writing is a bit better at saving bad art.

It has to be both, because it is a graphic novel. Art and a story. If I just want art, I'll go to the museum. If I want to read a book, I'll go to the library. But good manga has to be both.

the first thing that I have to like is the art... or else I will have a hard time reading it, if I don't like the story of course I won't like the manga but at least it was enough to read it... of course if the story is really good I might make an exception..

I would say story, since there's a few mangas I read that I'm not buying for the art work. On the other hand, there's one or two that I buy not just for the story but because of the art! @_@

You have to have a story to back the sexy art. I own a yaoi that all they do is screw each other and there's no reason for it! Sure it's sexy but I was like what?! Is there a hidden compartment in this book where the real story is?! I kinda cried a little inside.

They are both important, but story more so. Now, if the art is just horrid, it makes it difficult to take the story seriously, or even to force yourself to watch it despite it's ugliness--but you can still do it and you can still get something out of it. But if a story is bad, then the entire experience is ruined. You get to the end of the episode and you think,"Well it was pretty but...it was really really boring. It's totally not worth it. >

Art is more important to me, I want to become an artist, and i'll read anything with pretty art! sometimes i'll read something with a good story (and by good i mean ultra smutty) even if the art isn't that great

Although I find the story to be one of the most important things artwork is what really draws me in. As a writer and artist in training both are just as important really... With good artwork and a poor storyline it's all appeal and no depth. With a good storyline and poor artwork it's good to get into but the art can easily put you off. Either way they're both just as needed >_>

Both - It's a waste of time to read a bad story and ugly art is just painful to look at.

Kashira Ka04 Both are extremely important in my opinion. However, if the art sucks I have a feeling I wouldn't read it. If the story sucks I think I'd treat it just as an art book biggrin . Like she said blaugh

I think art and story are equally important. mrgreen I insanely collect fanart, and read fanfiction, too. And doujinshi are wonderful when they're well thought out. 3nodding Great art without a story is pointless, and a great story with crap art makes my eyes bleed. X.X

You cant make people pick the art's no good without a story the story is no good without the art so basically thats my response. I cant imagine a yaoi with no story line to it of some kind or just the images alone that dont tell whats going on.
