Yuri is rare. At least the kind of yuri most women would want to read (story, setting, characterization and so on). Most yuri you'll find is male orientated porn, which is tacky and horribly unrealistic (though the last part can be said about yaoi porn too >.>). That's not even yuri. That's just really bad lesbian porn. It's frustrating, and this is coming from someone who likes porn.
The problem is that yuri isn't popular among the group of people that it's geared towards. Yuri's suppose to be for straight women, making a part of issue sexual preference. Just like yaoi isn't geared towards/written by gay men, yuri really isn't geared towards/written by gay women. It's geared towards/written by straight women who don't find it appealing. It's not geared towards men because most men don't want setting, characterization, and so on. They perfer the smex (unattached, sexual women with triple E breasts apparently >.>), which is fine for them but causes a problem for us people who want good yuri story and/or porn.
I’ve read some rather good GL stories. It’s taken me some time but I have found them A lot of them come from Lililicious, who fansub Mari-sama ga miteru, but even then they’re usually not what I’m looking for. The only time I’ve really found GL stories that I really like was when I left the anime fandom all together and stayed generally in the fanfic region. Though even then there’s not a great amount of it, nor is all of it great. But then… it’s always hit or miss with fanfics. ^^;;;;

I like both. The problem with them is that:
BL is meant to appeal to a general audience of females (not to exclude males, but generalizations, please). Females like different things in animation than guys to. That is why BL can tend to have more romanticstuff to it.
GL is different, it is meant to appeal to guys (and once again, I'm a girl, I LOVE GL, so not excluding them, but generalizing). In general, because of the assumption guys think about sex more, the creators of yuri don't think guys will honestly care about a story.
Thus the lack of variety in GL, and it is also because of the smaller fanbase.
Shoujo-ai can have some really sweetness and cuteness that...well, makes it stand apart from the overriding term of GL.
