If Jeremiah had been less astute, or worse at reading Alexis in general, he wouldn't have seen it -- but they started at that, fingers clenching, a barely perceptible widening of eyes. (They still kept him ever-so-slightly to the right. They always kept things they were focusing on a little off-center.) "I'm. Managing. You're in the hospital, someone tried t'kill you, and we're talkin' about my magic? We don't need to. I'm fine." (They wanted it back. They wanted it back so badly it burned.)

"That's good," Jeremiah replied, chuckling and then sighing a bit because chuckling was not comfortable to do. "I'm glad to hear that she's, ah, molting? Certainly expect that her eyes will be stunning to see when I see her next."

He genuinely meant it to.

Jeremiah had been reading, going over what had been relayed to him and trying to write notes down by hand and-

"Beaumont?" he blinked, looking up and unable to stop the smile that appeared (even if he was a little perplexed and amused that Shiloh came out of the bathroom; good thing no one was in it currently). Especially because Hellbine was swaddled in Shiloh's arms. Were those ... tiny glasses? "Please don't tell me you actually attempted every door in the hospital on the other side until it got you here?"

"It is not the first attempt on my life, nor would it have been the first successful attempt at killing me, so- yes we are discussing your magic." Jeremiah shifted, arm reaching out to set the tea cup down and not wincing even though it was clearly discomforting.

"We are rapidly reaching a point where everyone needs to be at their fullest capabilities and you have been without long enough." His expression shifted then, eyes bright (even if one was bloodshot) and focused on them. "You'll also have to excuse me if I call you on the utter bullshite is that you are fine."

"Okay, so I'm not fine, but --" Alexis' shoulders were set, their eyes were green steel - "Y'don't need me ******** things up for everyone else again. There's enough goin' on without me getting in the way. So what if I'm not fine? 's better if I just give up on it. Nobody else gets hurt because of me."

Last night had been bad, again; flickers of the hall of mirrors, a leg piercing through Zac's torso like he was a toy, and then always back to their-face-turning-to-Rill with blood in their mouth and her under them, sobbing, pleading, shattered fingers abortively pushing at them in desperation. Temperance's bones cracking. Blood and blood and blood, fading flickers of the past, a gunshot - they'd woken up panting and had stayed awake for hours, afraid to sleep again while the thoughts were fresh.

"So, what? You simply wish to give it all up?" Jeremiah looked incredulous. "People get hurt, Alexis, and you have to accept the responsibility of your actions and move on. This behavior? This is something that must be overcome if you want to see your powers returned to you."

One of the nurses opened the door - a woman in her twenties, short rakish hair, a persistent tired look - and gestured to Alexis, looking decidedly unimpressed. "Do you need her to be escorted out?" (They bristled at the 'her' but swallowed it down, down, down; it was their life, always would be, they could no sooner fix it than they could rewrite themself on a fundamental level. If they looked at the nurse too much they thought about tearing her apart with nails and knives.)

"Eh," she said. "I know ya will sleep when ya dead, p much." Preacher couldn't blame him. She especially couldn't force him to take it easy when she'd shouted down a doctor who tried to make her stay. s**t had to get done.

"Can ya 'least get some magic-like healing or some s**t? N' I can bring paperwork no prob."

"The new healer is very... gently. I like him quite a bit." The wisp seemed to be helping Chief Mercer. Or, so she assumed. "I don't have a problem - I can have myself assigned to you since the staff here knows I'm more comfortable about those with magic than some others." It was a fact that the hospital forbade magic unless it was something someone literally could not turn off. She'd been successful, however, in doing some small things.

She leaned in. "They don't know I'm magically inclined, and I'd rather they not find out, though." Temperance looked a little sheepish. "You mentioned you could weaken it for a window, possibly - how?"

"No rest for the wicked," agreed Jeremiah solemnly. Not that he was necessarily wicked but the point remained. His head tilted before he nodded a little.

"I was thinking about spending some time at Court while I am recovering and letting magic help speed the process along a bit. The bone bruises are the ... problem."

"A good thing," that the new healer was gentle, "and if you would, I would greatly appreciate it." Then, as if he realized it, he spoke again. His voice was low, just audible for Temperance. "I've no desire to see you having to deal with what I've dealt with since we came to this world or see your career end because prejudice of any kind."

The stares were a bit much sometimes, though thankfully years of serving the APD and Ashdown saved him from some of the truly horrible things about being a known magical user. Even if they were more wary of him now than before thanks to the attempted murder.

"This world has more magic," his voice was still low, "and I believe that due to that I can create a spot in which the skin is not hardened, so to speak, and you'll be able to draw the blood. If I can control the scales, make it harder, then I should be able to briefly do the opposite." Just not permanently as this was simply something that was now part of him.

"Not every door." Shiloh explained as he walked over, "But most of them. The nurses kept stopping me because I was trying to take Hellbine with me. Like, I'm sure he prolly could've found his way in on his own, but..."

He stood up straight and put on his best faux-professional act, "As a Noble of the Court, I'm required to help all othercreatures." And then he coughed as if the single sentences had taken a tremendous amount of effort. "Anyway, so what the ********? Driving drunk or someone really got it out for you? I haven't been paying much attention to the news."

"It's fine," Jeremiah told the nurse. "They," there was something about his tone as well as the look he gave the nurse, "don't need to be escorted out." He would wait the moments until the nurse realized he was not backing down and was serious. Algie wasn't back yet, they would talk until he was nearly here.

"My point remains, Alexis. Responsibility. Control. Discipline. Capability." It was not lost on him that he was, at this point, saying some of the things that Ezra had said to him. "These are all things that would enable you to have powers and not hurt people." As always, his voice was calm and even. Never raised. Jeremiah had perfected it.

Jeremiah chuckled, at least for a moment before he stopped. His arm wrapped around himself a moment, as if that would ease things. Hellbine, once close enough, squirmed a little in Shiloh's arms but then stayed in them.

Mostly because he had no idea where he was meant to go. The small cat was certain climbing on his people dad was a bad idea right now.

"As a fellow Noble of the Court, I appreciate the time you have taken in enabling my familiar to come to me." His lips twitched, fingers flicking towards the chair that was near his bed and pulled close already. "First someone decided to see if I could be killed with a high-powered rifle shot to the heart then, when that did not work, blew out the tire on the car so that it would roll and crash. Neither, of course, actually worked."

If Jeremiah had raised his voice, even still, Alexis might have been fine - they knew yelling, knew how to stand their ground against accusations, against what they were-not leveled at them like a hundred bayonets. But stern disappointment would always make them shiver.

(The nurse arched an eyebrow at Jeremiah, but left anyways. Alexis didn't look at her because all they would think about was her blood on their hands - she was smaller than they were but more sturdily-built, but even regular human teeth could do damage if you bit down where the skin was thin - ********, no, bad thought, s**t. Stop thinking about that.)

"I'm going t'hurt people, I want to hurt people - the best way not to is to make it so I can't." The wall was, abruptly, very fascinating. "You've gotta do better than that if you want to make it seem like a good idea, and not just somethin' I want."

"Can magic do that? I mean I guess it can, it's all weird bullshit anyhow." She wondered if his court space was as ******** pretentious as everyone else's. "I gotta scoot afore they realize I'm still here instead of at m'follow-up." One of the hospital doctors was monitoring her hands and foot and, as much as she hated doctors, she also didn't want to lose use of important bits of herself.

"Don' get too bored, boss."

"The medical field is even more strict than most think," she said. But that was neither here nor there. "I would be happy to give it a try. If you can't do it now, you can have me paged later."

"A strong will over there can do anything," Jeremiah replied. "Though, yes, you should get out of here. It is bad enough they're keeping me now, don't let them keep you."

Then, as if realizing it. "Also let me know about what you learn about Minerva, would you? She's been particularly tight-lipped about sharing," not that it was surprising, "and I've not learned much about her in this world either."

"I'm well aware," his tone went more somber, "of just how strict it is. There have been a small handful of cases of those that have been caught with magic in the medical field." The look on his face implied the outcome was not a good one.

A breath escaped. "If you've the necessary items on hand, I can attempt it. I'm sure it will likely make them a little less agitated with me for all the broken needles."
