Once the incense was lit, Adder tucked it into his bag so the pokemon would be drawn to him, and he could move around and still reap it’s benefits. He also took the lighter back from Pan so she could go back to snacking, and put it back in his bag, looking around with a more watchful eye. If this thing worked, then any minute now, a pokemon should—there! Heh, a yungoos… That wasn’t surprising. Adder had been through this area enough times, and if there was one thing that was certain, it was that Yungoos weren’t hard to find. He should have known it would be the first pokemon he’d encounter… It’s popularity didn’t change anything, though—he still planned to catch it, once it had been defeated.
Sending out Popplio, he tossed the ball in the air, catching it on its way down after the pokemon had been released. ”Alright Popplio, use Pound!” he instructed. The pokemon, however, did not seem quite as prepared as he was. ”P-plio!?” she squeaked, nearly losing her balance as she jumped back at the sight of the pokemon. Adder narrowed an eye in disbelief. ”Munch munchlax,” Pan remarked, tossing some chips into her mouth. Adder shot her a look, but then blinked and looked back at his starter as she turned on him, looking flustered, and quite mad. ”Plio! Pop poplio!” she chided, waving a flipper at him. ”Wha—hey! Look out!” he demanded angrily. She cried out as Yungoos, evidently not interested in the drama going on, promptly attacked from behind. The popplio turned, spitting a water gun at it and shying away, while Adder sighed. ”Pan, would you…” he muttered. ”Mun, mun,” she muttered, setting her chips aside and brushing past the popplio. She took the opponent’s attack, before tackling it in return, fainting the pokemon so Adder could toss a pokeball to catch it.

Muttering incoherently, Adder pulled out some potions, before kneeling irritably down. ”Next time, listen to me,” he told his starter, moving to heal her. ”P-pop…” she muttered poutingly, holding out a flipper for him to heal. He didn’t know what she was saying. He was pretty annoyed, though. He coaxed Pan over, glancing up as another few more pokemon were starting to appear. He should probably let the others out, too, at this rate…
He stood up, once the two were healed, and reached for the other two pokeballs. He paused, though, when he noticed one of the wild pokemon…. Was a munchlax. ”Hey, look, it’s a Pan…” he commented, an oddly boyish smile crossing over his face. The other munchlax blinked and looked at him—Pan gave him an unamused look, that quickly took the smile from his face. He frowned at her, uncertainly. ”What?” he muttered, releasing the other two. Hopefully they would be a little better prepared to battle…

Adder was… quite honestly surprised. Litten was much more prepared for battle! The little cat was pretty worn by the end of the battle, but… it was still standing. He leaned down, healing it, and gave it a pat on the head, still looking surprised. ”Huh…” he mused. The litten seemed pretty nervous, anxiously shuffling its feet a bit, but… honestly, Adder was impressed. He grinned some. He’d already wanted litten. He’d wanted it the moment he found out about it. His mom had sort of… insisted he get Popplio and played it up to be really useful, but he wanted litten. And this… this was just reaffirming all of that.
He was so going to rub this in her face next time he saw her.
He straightened up when another pokemon appeared, this time a Meowth. Welp, time for Rowlet’s turn.

Adder hummed thoughtfully as he rolled the pokeball in his hand. ”You guys keep training,” he muttered, pulling out his pokedex and a book, ”I gotta… check something.” Namely, how meowth evolved. Because he was pretty sure it evolved through this tricky thing called… ‘happiness’. That wasn’t something Adder was exactly good at, with the whole… ‘friendship’ thing, but he’d heard of a few tricks to kind of… expedite it. Namely berries, items… stuff pokemon really liked that made them really happy pretty quickly. And he… happened to know a berry guy.
While his pokemon trained, he pulled out his communicator and sent a text. There was a kid from his class… a guy everyone knew, who grew berries and would trade them for stuff. Hopefully, even though they weren’t exactly friends, he could… ‘place an order’, so to speak.
’Can you plant me some Pomeg or Tamato berries or something?’ he texted, waiting a moment to see if his classmate was going to be fast to respond. He straightened a bit when he received a reply pretty quick-- ’Sure.’ Not even a question of who this was or anything? Well…. Alright then. He certainly wasn’t going to bother with more than that, if that was all it took.
Meanwhile, his pokemon… actually did what he said. Sort of. Popplio seemed pretty adamantly against it, but Litten was evidently too nervous to decline… and the Rufflet just seemed… well, fine either way.

Adder turned back to his pokemon, frowning when he noticed Popplio was still pouting and staring at the other pokemon unhappily. What the hell was it’s problem… He frowned, walking over to stand by her, looking down with a frown of his own. The pokemon felt his shadow fall over her, and slowly looked up, looking very much like she was trying hard to be bold and not shrink under his gaze. ”Didn’t I tell you to train…” he muttered. He was pretty sure he did. He was probably being unreasonable expecting them to all just know how to fight right out of the lab, though, but he didn’t really want to acknowledge that. In fact, he very much wanted to ignore it. He turned, looking as a Pikipek appeared, and then pointing at it, before addressing the Popplio.
”Pound. Use pound on it,” he demanded. She puffed up her cheeks and looked indignantly at him, but finally scurried forward when he stomped his foot towards her. Geez! Pokemon weren’t supposed to be that reproachful, were they? Maybe he needed to get some badges sooner than he thought…

"OH MY ARCEUS.” Adder rolled his eyes up to the sky in the most over dramatic of ways and slouched where he stood in exasperation. Pan shook her head at his attitude, now munching on a bag of popcorn. Rowlet watched curiously, and Litten nervously, as Adder stomped his way over to his fainted pokemon. He hauled her up into her arms, the poor popplio flopping about, pretty much… entirely unconscious. Adder frowned, then grimaced as he adjusted her in his arms, struggling with her weight as he tried to pull out her pokeball. Eventually, he managed to get it out, and lightly bopped it against her head to return her. He sighed, slouching, then shook his head. ”Just…. Keep training, for now,” he muttered to the other pokemon, folding his arms over his chest as he closed his eyes in annoyance, ”We’ll go heal her later…”

Adder shifted and glanced over, frowning a bit when he noticed Litten had fearfully jumped in to help its teammate. He furrowed his brow. What… so Rowlet couldn’t handle these pokemon either? Geez starter pokemon were weak… He wasn’t going to doubt himself with Popplio, no way he was going to think that maybe he’d been too harsh on her. That was not happening. But… that being said… Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to go to Hau’oli city or something, where the pokemon were more… consistent. It might help him catch more pokemon he didn’t have, either. Speaking of… he caught the grubbin they had defeated and moved back over, figuring he… should probably be more involved in his pokemon’s training. Pan seemed to be bossing the boys around while he was off pouting thinking, but… he was the trainer. He should really be the one giving orders. And… healing his pokemon.

Adder closed his eyes as he held Slowpoke’s pokeball in his hand, after making sure his pokemon were healed again. If he remembered right… this pokemon could evolve into two different things. One of them was by trading. And that, right there, was something he had somewhat forgotten about, and dreaded having to deal with. He forgot you had to trade some pokemon to evolve them. Not just that, but you had to get them back to actually register the pokedex entry. Which meant he needed to trade it to someone he could trust to not just… run off with it. Or who he wasn’t seeing face to face, because then he’d have to try and… track them down or something. Which, obviously, he had no way of knowing how to do, besides maybe telling whatever pokemon he was about to trade, to maul the other trainer if they weren’t traded back immediately.

Grimacing, Adder shook his head. He could always level this one up, too, or…. Well, he’d figure it out. There was probably someone out there that needed to trade and evolve a pokemon they wanted to keep, or register, too. It was something to keep in mind, though…. That he would have to trade. He knew there were a few other pokemon that evolved through the same means. That was for another day, however—for now, he needed to focus on the battles. He looked up as a metapod rolled out into view, rolling his eyes and gesturing for Rowlet to take this one after he was healed. He watched while he sent Slowpoke to his PC. Yeah, sure… Rowlet mostly had physical attacks and harden would slow that… buuuuut it probably could use the experience more. And at least it wasn’t a water type.

Adder frowned a bit, looking at the unconscious metapod. He wasn’t going to catch it. It was a decent level, but… it was a metapod. It would be better to catch a caterpie at a higher level, if possible, evolve it, and then evolve that. If he had to, he could come back to catch a metapod, since he was pretty sure they weren’t that hard to come by, here, but… He turned his head, looking off, back towards that box. And back towards the city. He needed to heal his pokemon, even if he didn’t particularly care to worry about popplio that much. It was just… a good idea to have it healed, in case he needed it for some reason. He looked back around as a Spinarak scuttled into view, scratching the back of his head. He knelt down, making sure everyone was healed up… well, save Popplio. He straightened back up, looking at the Spinarak, then frowning, and sending Litten forward. He really wanted to train the others, or at least Rowlett… but these pokemon were honestly proving kinda strong. He’d gotten lucky so far… it might be better to just get Litten stronger, so that he could cover for the others when needed…

Or not. Adder stared at the fainted pokemon, then caught it, before releasing it again. He didn’t plan, or need, to keep most of these pokemon… except Meowth. Annnd Pikipek. And... Grubbin, and Slowpoke. Because he was going to evolve those. Technically, he could evolve Rattata, too, but… there was just no point. He was pretty sure he could find a wild Raticate and even if he couldn’t, he could find a rattata that was stronger and evolve that. Besides, much as he was definitely enjoying filling the pokedex, it wasn’t his top concern at the moment. No, his top concern was, in fact, training, for now. Which he wouldn’t honestly be able to manage for much longer. He needed to heal up his pokemon, and restock on potions… It was a good thing he’d been saving up his allowance for a while…

Distracted by the debate on whether to stay or go, or how much longer to draw out the training, Adder missed the magnemite regain consciousness, and slip away before he could catch it. He did turn his head at the sound of the grass rustling-- but by then, it was already slipping out of sight, and reach. He frowned, then shook his head, before scratching the back of it. He needed to focus better, seriously... But that stupid freaking box... and healing his pokemon... And, come to think of it, he might run low on pokeballs... This was all gonna be a lot more money a lot faster than he thought, especially until his pokemon could hold their own better. This time Adder definitely wasn't distracted. No, he was ready, and he was reaching for the pokeball. He was intent to try and buckle down and catch these pokemon-- but much to his surprise, the wingull shook itself awake, grimacing, and quickly took off, disappearing before he could even throw the ball. It... it fled? It fled. Wh... he thought pokemon could only do that during battle, but apparently if they recovered fast enough... He sighed, letting go fo the pokeball, and narrowing his eyes as another Yungoos appeared. Murr.... Fine, whatever. He glanced down, trying to figure out who would be best. He really needed to try and broaden his pokemon's movesets... but there wasn't really a lot of options, from what he remembered. Oh well... whatever. He nodded Rowlet forward, once he'd made sure he was healed up. He probably would need to go to the pokecenter soon, but he was going to at least try and put it off as much as he could, for the time being.

Frowning, Adder released the Yungoos once it had been caught, watching it bound off into the grass. Funny how when wild pokemon fainted, they still had energy.... but when his popplio fainted, she was out cold. "Hmph." He turned, healing Rowlett up again, and then straightening, his expression flickering to uncertainty. He didn't have a lot of potions left... He shook his head. Whatever. He had another concern that he might as well focus on. He turned, releasing the Meowth he'd caught earlier. Normally, meowths were... rather proper. Not necessarily in disposition, just in stance. Two feet, lofty expression.... Seeing one laying, eyes half open, clearly barely conscious, was a bit odd, and made his facial muscles twitch a bit. He shook his head, though, and walked over, picking it up, glancing at his pokemon briefly. He needed to at least try and give it some attention, to... raise it's... 'happiness'. The guy lived in a nearby area, so... hopefully it wouldn't be too long before he got his shortcuts, too, but he was pretty sure that would only do so much. Friendship took... 'time', too.... unnnfortunately....

Adder glanced over at the Pikipek that was battled, but, honestly, his hands were a bit full with the recovering meowth in his arms. The pokemon shook its head, then looked up at Adder, managing a suspicious gaze as it's tail flicked. Adder forced on an attempt at a smile. "Sorry about, um... my pokemon battling you earlier. I can uh... carry you if you want?" he tried ot offer. WOW FRIENDLINESS WAS HARD. He tried to ignore the stares pretty much all of his pokemon were giving him. He knew Pan's mouth was open, this time not for food, but in disbelief, and he had a feeling even Litten and Rowlet were either concerned or confused. He could feel their stares....
