At this point of time I think its a bad idea. I mean, I want more BL too and the more exposure it gets the more gets liscensed and brought over. But right now (In the US anyway) with all the homophobia and hate I don't think its a good idea. It'll just give the bigots in office an excuse to ban the stuff we love...and knowing them, they might even try to ban anime/manga all together seeing this "homosexual filth" as they would call it.

I agree with him. Not only that but it's doing everything big first which is not good. People in this dumb america needs to adjust. They should shows litttle here and there so people can get the fact that it is another part of art instead of automatically thinking it's hentai or for those who dont just cartoon porn as such. We are talking about people who are so in-the-box that hardly gay/lez/bi shows gets pickited or bad publicity. So bad that you thought it was the next 9/11 or something. It's true. Theses are the same people who get freaked out about a boy kissing another boy and it would be a peck, either in movies or walking down the street. Im not saying all people are like this but sadly there is a majority.

I agree with both of you very much. I've always been worried about yaoi becoming more publicly known. Yes, a bit here and there is okay... But I don't want people to start getting upset and calling it filth. With all of the edgy people on the issue of homosexuality, I don't want any bad publicity for it. I don't want ignorant people to think all anime is gay or porn, or that it's all violence and filth for children (even though most of it isn't for children). Plus if edgy parents start to hear about yaoi, then they may start to question any of their children who are into anime or monitor what they buy. I don't know what extremes people will go to, but I've heard some get pretty extreme.
That's absolutely true. The negativity that some may get from Yaoi could be generalized into all anime. That in and of itself is a bad thing, aside from the fact that just getting a negative vibe from Yaoi is bad enough. Plus, it might cause even more people to look down on homosexuality and all that, ("They're making Gay Cartoons now?!") which is even worse. I mean, I guess it's a good thing that more people are aware of it and it's not quite as esoteric as it used to be. But I think that it's mostly buissness. It's the forbidden fruit gimmik. I think that by making it so popular so suddenly it might make people hate it rather than those who could have been introduced to it slowly and could have actually liked it.

That being said, I am thoroughly amused that I went to Borders and near the manga section they had anime merchandise. One of which was a small bag/purse with "I heart YAOI" on it.

Yeah, I think a little bit at a time is fine for now. Just so people can get used to it.

Yes, I have seen a new addition of yaoi-manga at Borders (and that little yaoi-bag). I'm glad they finally have some, and that other movie and book stores are selling more BL/yaoi related things heart

i'm afraid that if it goes main stream everyone[girls mostly] will go
nuts & people who know jack sht about Yaoi would be all
"OMFG GAY PORN! YAY/GROSS!"

Plus i just don't think america's ready for it.
we're too self centered & the stuff with Bush is weird. x.x

GAH That's such bullshit.
Whenever MTV plays anything..
Annoying people start liking it and it becomes a really annoying fad.

I like yaoi to be more indie if you know what I mean.
Then have stupid people start liking it.

And then everyone will go crazy over it just like they do when cartoon newtork puts out more horrible dubbs.
"LYK OMG I LYK LOOOVE YAOI.
It's lyk so awesome."
BLEH. ::throws up::

I'm not sure if it's good or bad. Bush/other people could start calling it gross/disgusting and try to band(is that the right word?) yaoi. Or people can start liking it and be ok with people looking/watching it. Where you openly talk about it and be able to look at yaoi manga openly. *shruggs* I just hope the result is good.

I agree, now is a bad time for BL to reveal itself on a much larger scale than it is now.

I have to say, I'm amazed by some of the guild members' views on yaoi becoming popular. Yaoi becoming mainstream is not a terrible fandom destroying thing. I think that people are generalizing and judging with the same close mindedness that they're accusing other people of. It's more than a tad hypocritical to stand there and say "Oh no! We can't let people know about it! They're all close minded idiots who won't understand!!!!"

For every close minded idiot, there's an equally open minded individual. That's not to say that everybody is going to approve, you can never please all of the people all the time, but people will understand. People are capable of thinking outside of the box. Maybe you should try it sometime. Liking yaoi or shounen ai does not give you a free pass to open mindedness. It only makes you look like a hypocrite when you start judging others so unfairly.

While you do have a point. Need I remind you that homosexulaity in general is still somewhat of a taboo in America? There are actual reasons why we are saying no to begin with.

That was.. very interesting.
I liked it. <3
But there are some good points being made about how it would be bad if Yaoi was brought into the mainstream.
So, I agree that America isn't quite ready.

Mainstream yaoi? Hm...it means more yaoi titles available to us desperate fangirls(and fanboys), but also drags it into the spotlight and all the experts will end up discussing the dangerous effect of naughty BL scenes on the teenage psyche and parents will be like "OMG NO MORE MANGA FOR YOU PERIOD!!!"

Yes. America isn't ready. America will not be ready while we are still young. Or old. Or dead. Face it, most Americans are a bunch of shallow uneducated rednecks. I'm so moving to Canada.
