Now it was time for touches, and he got up to take his basket by the river to gather a few things. First he added a bit of mud to pack any holes in and let it harden, and then he dotted a few places with river algae and a few reed leaves. Then he found a few dead bugs and sprinkled them on top. Perfect Camouflage!
He returned and set his now dripping basket on the ground beside the blanket to dry and then harden, before beaming at Barth and Zar. "It's perfect." Reeds: Flexibility: 2 -1 = 1 + 3 = 4 Stability: 2 - 1 = 1 + 4 = 5 Size: 3 - 3 = 0 + 4 = 4 Buoyancy: 4 - 2 = 2 + 1 = 3 Looks: 12/20 = Pretty gaudy

"It's very nice. Organic," he told Calder, which it was. He had a soft spot for mud.
Whether his own was aesthetically pleasing was a matter of taste. There were no decorations, and the colors were uncomplicated. There had not been a large expenditure of effort, on Barth's part. But perhaps there was something to be said for simplicity.
Barth, had he the opportunity to argue on behalf of his design, would have compared it to the meditative contemplation of a rock garden, or the minimalized, careful strokes used in the Conquest clan's calligraphy.Quote: Silk Flexibility +1 Stability +2 Size +2 Buoyancy +4 Looks: 9/20

Zar's basket was a disaster, at least from a practicality perspective, it didn't look like it would be good for much of anything, a fact which made him quietly despair. He couldn't build things, he couldn't do things, he couldn't do a great deal of anything with any degree of competency and was reminded of such time and time again. He wasn't sure why he'd even come to this class, what ridiculous notion had possessed him to venture outside his office.
He tried not to look at anyone as he decorated the basket with neatly folded paper, interwoven between the gaps in the twined wood fibres, black and white, black and white, almost obsessive compulsive as he did so. It meant he didn't need to look at anyone, didn't need to admire the solid basket Calder had made or even the simple one Barth had made.
He'd been out-done by a demon for whom getting up to answer the door was almost a physical impossibility.
It was only when he ran out of paper that he let his claws drop to his lap again and looked at the floor next to where he sat instead. At least like him it had one solitary virtue. At least it looked pretty.

Zar proceeded to put all of his concentrated, detailed efforts into decorating a basket that was unfortunately both too small and falling apart.
Barth could not help but read despair sinking into the other demon.
"Maybe a bit...more form than function," Barth hedged.
Just one. It wasn't a comment he'd expected to hear from Zar. He was not, himself, overly invested in scarelings, although he found them generally agreeable.
"You can have mine, if you like," Barth offered quietly. It would save him from carrying it.

Zar looked up from his dismal staring and Barth got a long, slow stare for his comment. He didn't even bother to comment - he'd only agree and elaborate on other things that were more form than function. He wanted to just hide what he'd made and pretend that he hadn't tried at all, but even that was impossible now other people had noticed his feeble attempts.
He didn't know what to make of the other demon's offer, but all he could read in the gesture was pity and that stung more than anything else could. "No, it is - It's fine." he said, gathering up his claws to his chest and wrapping his wings around himself again. "This will do."

He looked over at Calder's and cleared his throat awkwardly.
"I know mine isn't the epitome of basket craftmanship..."

Zar glanced over just in time to watch Barth eye Calder's basket and immediately looked away. He interpreted the comment as a reminder that his basket was worse than both of theirs and simply nodded affirmatively.
"Hopefully we don't have to do too much more." he said, quietly.

Lan was determined to pick her basket and make it perfect. Picking silk as her base, she grinned, admiring the soft texture. A pumpkin from her would have only the finest in materials after all. And it would also be the most lovely.
The only problematic part would be actually making said basket.
Lan never made anything that wasn't easy in her life.
Usually because she'd keep re-doing it trying to make it better.
Because it had to always be perfect. Always.

Ah yes. Crafting. Watching Thera work Lan just held back, wondering if she should probably start or wait until Thera was finished with her demonstration to begin.
She made a tiny tiny basket.
In her mind it was only logical. After all, she was tiny, and this was just practice.

Making the Lid, modifying the basket itself, Lan kept wanting to undoo what she'd done. So she would, wasting time and effort on small mistakes while looking at things irrelevant in her efforts to create better. The lid came out too small and wibbly wobbly, it was more likely to float that the basket itself, and it wasn't very stable. Overall, Lan had begun to get frustrated at her basket making skills.
She made plans to make a better one later. These were important life skills after all.

As the baskets were completed, Thera beamed with pride at everyone. "Good job! Now we just have to test them. An old test we just must send them down the river and see if they hold." She offered no explanation as to why this test in particular, but she urged them to do so. Quote: You must send you baby down the river- Rolling 4d4, subtract the results from your final stats. If two stats reach 0 or negative, the basket has not passed the test. Your basket washes ashore in tatters. If you manage to pass if three or more stats stay afloat. A small, dark patch of thorns curled next to the blanket irritably. Barth was on the very edge of telling Zar to take the damn thing, when the instructor spoke up.
They had to...send them down a river? Of course.
Barth would personally not put anything he had given up quite a bit of fear for in a river. It was, he deeply suspected, an equine thing.
He edged the basket into the nearby shallows with a claw. He had not quite engineered the basket for adventure, and silk was not at its best while soggy, but he hoped the basket would make the best of it.
The basket wobbled bravely, but it had just not been made to withstand hardship.
It didn't sink into the waves below, but slowly and delicately folded apart, the ribbons staying unfolded on the surface.

It was completely hopeless. Mmur squinted at his dilapidated basket, poking it with a toe then continuing to push it with the flat of his foot until it slid into the water and sank to the bottom. Quote: Material: Reeds Flexibility: -4 Stability: -5 Size: -2 Buoyancy: -3 Appearance: 20
