Under Medea's guidance, the students fall into a Trance to learn of a cover up that occurred at Amityville long before their time. Mort observed the actions of a rather feisty paper golem named Callie Codex as she blundered and jovially yelled her way through her final days. Her intense loyalty to the Defenders and rebellious denial of the "false reapers" enkindled something within the zomboil.

Mort gains new understanding of what mini pets get to do every day, only with lots more danger than is necessary. Or maybe minis really do put up with longwinded old men and fussy owls . . .? He doesn't emerge unscathed, however, as the effects of the fragments begin to take hold of his already fragile sense of ego.

Mort is both intrigued and withdrawn about the trials of the captured Hunters, slowly revealing a side of himself he wished he could ignore. It was almost too easy to do so during the ensuing rescue mission the Hunters put up, though in their retreat he scars one of their ghouls with his lightning on accident.
That's probably going to haunt him later.
