>.< Even worshiping that god I'd feel uncomfortable with someone telling me that. "God didn't finish it, I did."
I've been uncomfortable with even saying "God bless you" for years, especially now that a lot of the people I'd probably say it to don't really worship that or any god.

Yeah I recognized at an early age that not everyone worshiped YHVH and started to become uncomfortable saying "God bless you" at that point. But growing up, I'd get fussed at for not saying it. I started just saying "Bless you" since it was generic enough to show concern for a sneeze without saying who's doing the blessing.

I had never consistently said 'God bless you,' but rather 'bless you.' After I became more certain in my beliefs, I became uncomfortable saying it, as it is perceived by those who hear to be referencing YHVH and I cannot pretend as if I mean another when I know how it will be interpreted and I fail to clarify. However, I was also uncomfortable not saying it as it is considered polite and I try to act in such a manner. As it stands, I generally do say it.
Any reason you don't use a more secular substitute?

Conditioning, most likely. And a lack of knowledge of any accepted substitute but for gesundheit. Why I don't use that one most likely, again, relates to the conditioning. And because I oft. forget what it means as I translate it as 'bless you,' despite that I know that is not its true translation.

It translates as "health".

I say Gesundheit myself. Do it when people cough as well.

I've taken to asking people if they're okay when they cough (or sneeze) around me. That way if they need anything (say, a tissue), that's how they answer, and if they don't, they say, "Yes."

I can respect that.

I tend to do this with those I know are not Christian. I do say "bless you" to my Christian co-workers as they have requested I do. If it keeps them happy I'm willing to do so.

Hey Nuri?! Where's that Elephant in the Room Thread?

The same place as the reading list, my pathways topic, the stuff for deo, and my for fun reading: Hiding behind the sheer terror that is my workshop, and my stifling work schedule and trying to keep my husband sane during field-based teaching.

When you get that thread up could you let me know? I'm writing a s**t ton about privilege, ally behavior, marginalization, systemic oppression and other related topics in my transfeminist blog and I'd like to compare notes. In case you want to look over the stuff I already have: Linky

Already had you on my Reader smile

Oh yay! I didn't know that. XD

I think it's pronounced "rah". Might need someone to check the OED just to double check though.

can someone be an 'oathbreaker' if they have not [knowingly] made or taken any oaths?

i have seen many people be called a liar and an oathbreaker and i get what a liar is (woo, points for me!) but what exactly is an oathbreaker? i understand the basic definition of the term and i know that some paths require oaths and have secrets that can not be told and anyone who goes against that is, by definition, an oathbreaker (wow, i've used that word alot, lol).

another question i have is: how can someone prove something that is oathbound without breaking an oath? this one really gets me. example: someone claims to be wiccan [or wican] and says something about their lord and lady and they are questioned as to who they believe the lord and lady to be. the names are oathbound, so how would someone go about answering it? i don't thing the answer 'i can't tell you' would fly very far, but maybe thats just me. could they tell someone who is of their faith? how would the person asking prove that they already know the answer without breaking an oath?

these are the kinds of things that keep me up at night gonk

A lot of times, just knowing that such information is oathbound goes a long way towards disproving acusations of fluff.
Obviously it's not a fool-proof test or question, which is why it's often asked with a few key other points, which are not oathbound.

According to Stargate, it is 'rah'!

Online OED - x
American Heritage Dictionary - 'rah.'
This has a link to another word spelled 'Re' and pronounced 'ray.' That may be because of Ra being merged with Horus to produce Re-Horakhty.
Encarta World English Dictionary - 'raa,' 'ray'
Cambridge Dictionaries Online - x
Merriam-Webster - ˈrä

Wikipedia says that 'ray' is the more correct pronunciation and 'rah' is the more common pronunciation. However, the article 'has insufficient inline citations' and I do not feel like digging through the provided ones to see whether this is backed or not.

We don't know. Egyptian language did not have written vowels so anything we say about pronunciation is an educated guess. Taking that into account, I've seen it as either Re or Ra. Both are acceptable.

There were usually caps involved in a question about the weapon (I believe it was) of ether - specifically directed at people claiming to be Wicca/Wiccan/thereabouts - when Triste asked it, so I was never sure whether that was a serious question or not. XD

I think I've seen Tea use it as well, but she's naturally less excitable.

I need more health. Actually, I probably need a better diet to start with. But this mother of a cold I have right now isn't helping either, hehe.
