NEW QUESTION!

This is going to take some thinking.

A group of Borg are approaching your position. You're unarmed, but have
barricaded yourself in with an industrial replicator. With the safeties off,
you can make any kind of weapon (any weapon available as of the end
of Deep Space 9.)

What kind of weapons are you going to have the replicator make? Why?

Does this have a particular answer you're looking for that has to do with the series? Or can I come up with any random idea of mine?

Limit yourself to any weapon that can be physically lifted and carried by
humans without any vehicle or beast of burden.
Limit yourself to weapons that have appeared in either TOS, TNG, DS9
or the movies.

A "correct" answer doesn't require really obscure information- but it
will take some analysis and conclusions on your own part.

SOLUTION:
Replicate yourself a few sets of hand-to-hand weapons, like swords or
Bowie knives, and sheath those in case you're really in trouble.
Then replicate as many machinepistols and submachine guns as you can
physically carry. (Think that scene in "The Matrix.")
The Borg can adapt to ENERGY weapons, but solid weapons can't be
adapted to.
Picard used a TOMMY GUN to mow down Borg on the holodeck, once the
safeties were off and he could get a real Tommy Gun. That was early
20th century technology.
Even early 21st century versions would be lethal, and machinepistols and
submachine guns are the smaller versions of those. Just replicate lots and
lots of spare, loaded ammo clips too....

After reading the solution, I think I was a bit over the top with my acid throwing choice. xd

As long as you can carry enough ammunitions, I think your solution is more doable. smile

I'm not sure how much damage bowie knives can do to borgs... even the biological parts are partly covered with circuits and exoskeleton... but hand me the guns and I'll help you repel the borg invasion. mrgreen

In a tight fight, I'd put blade-armed Klingons to win against an equal number
of Borgs any day.

I'd prefer to mow them down with bullets, however. Funny how even a
19th century weapon could kill a Borg (early Winchester repeater rifles)
where a phaser might be adapted to...

Oh, and acid WOULD work, it's just not the most efficient method AS A
WEAPON. You could mow down Borg by sweeping a gun.

NEW question!

Hawaiian shirts (officially, aloha shirts) are worn by tourists on vacation.

At least 3 officers wore them on Star Trek television at different points.
Name any ONE of them.

Q did

Q was never made an officer,
not even a field-ensign.
Wesley Crusher out-ranked him when Q was on the Enterprise.

Oops, kinda skipped the officer part.
Don't ask me how I know this but, even though it is my sworn enemy, I watched Enterprise gonk and the guy named Trip had one. I think that's his name anyway.

A betleH it's not the same as a bowie knife, love. Let me learn how to use one of those and then I'll be more willing to do hand-to-hand combat with a borg.

Although, the fact that you have to be at arm length for it means the borg has a really good chance of assimilate you while you're stabbing it. I think I prefer the Winchester.

Correct!

Also, on Voyager,
Tom Paris and Harry Kim wore them, and Tom wore them several times.

I mentioned the Bowie knife as an example of a weapon that even the
untrained can grab, sheath, unsheath, and use. If I was reduced to
blade-fighting, I'd prefer the the Klingon mek'leth to the Bowie knife-
then again, I'm not a complete stranger to blades. Then again, if I really
wanted to use a knife in a life-and-death struggle, I'd prefer my Arkansas
toothpick to almost anything else. It's basically a triangular shortsword.

Not that the Bowie knife is to be dismissed. That's the knife used in Francis
Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula", and the knife Crocodile Dundee
used in the famous exchange.

*mugger opens a switchblade*
"He's got a knife."
"That isn't a knife. THIS is a knife." *unsheathes Bowie*

======
The Winchester rifle is an Old West standard. It's the one Deanna Troi used
in "A Fistful of Datas."

The pistol used in "Shore Leave" was a Smith & Wesson M & P, which was
made in the late 19th century. (It wasn't a "38 Special", because "38
Special" is an AMMUNITION, not a PISTOL. It wasn't the S & W Detective's
Special, either.)

The Thompson submachine gun- the "Tommy gun"- was made at the close
of World War I, and was in production and use in the 1920s. It became
known as the gangster's preference because it was an effective rifle that
couldn't find a market to the army OR to police forces, which meant it was
sold to the civilian market-and gangsters were smart enough to conclude
it was the most dangerous gun of the time that could be carried and fired
by one person.

Any of those, loaded, aimed and fired at a Borg, could shoot a Borg down.
I'd rather carry a submachine gun and some machine-pistols if I needed
to mow down opponents.
More modern submachine guns, that is-like the Uzi.

I still think hand-to-hand combat with a borg will end in you assimilated, no matter if you manage to kill the borg or not.

The Klingon mek'leth looks a lot easier to use than the betleH (unless you're used to fight with two-hands, long weapons... a quarterstaff for instance) but it's still too close in my opinion.

Give me a Remington 1100 instead. wink I'll rather not have a dislocated shoulder by using an automatic or semi-automatic that will hurt me with the recoil.

Mind you, if I'm surrounded by borgs I'll fight them with whatever I have at hand (including a switch-blade if it's all there's available) and not having this discussion.
Now, if I have time to think first, my plan would be: Set the holodeck to "safeties off". Create a big tank some 3 metres above ground. Tell the computer to fill it with acid. Snare the borgs into entering the holodeck. Run away at the shout of "computer, withdraw the tank". Leave the borgs to deal with the acid shower.

It worked for Worf when he was hampered by a spacesuit. I think skill and
nerves, and facing ONE AT A TIME, would count for a lot. Remember how
Picard disabled one once by pulling out a CHEEK TUBE? I think sweeping
a blade through all the tubes you can reach would serve to drive them
back while hitting vital targets if they step in.

So, swing the blade in slashes across the tubes, then reverse the angle,
and push in for a fatal stab. With a blade designed for both, and enough
skill, that's quite workable.

I'd STILL prefer to just shoot them, though. Lots and lots of machinepistols and
submachineguns. And earplugs.

It's closer than I'd like, but I have more confidence in my bladework than
you have in your bladework. ONE borg, I think I could take.

Seen on a bumper sticker: "'Gun control' means holding the gun with
both hands."

I'd be as nervous of the acid as I'd be of the Borg, myself, but then, there's
room for different approaches with something like this.

Me too. But I'm more confident in my ability to run away quickly (away from the acid as much as away from the borgs) than in my ability to face them in battle of any kind.

Now, if you give me some training in hand-to-hand combat, things would be different.
(Remember, I was told by one of my Klingon teachers that I was too clumsy to be taught how to use a betleH unless he had a very big empty space to do so... ane even then he wasn't sure he'd dare.)

Imzadi, the question was meant for YoukaiLuvr and her question about that episode. She never mentioned if "kiss the girl, get the key" was the teaching Garak complained about not being taught in the Obsidian Order.
(I AM pretty sure it is correct, but I wanted confirmation)

Yes, Maddy - it is! xd I love that line!

I am sorry about being AWOL for so long. sweatdrop Ugh...end of semester was killer...but I have my A.S. in science now...though I have yet to find a job to use that with....

Anyway, I'm back and ready to go. I would have answered that aloha shirt question if I had checked a few days earlier...I actually just saw one of the main Voy epis with Neelix's Holodeck resort the other day....

Welcome back! We missed you.
If you have any question you want to put up for us, go ahead. IIRC last 2 questions were answered, so there's no question to be answered at the moment.

I was trying to think of a question (I'll probably post one from my books with this one, anyway), when lo and behold, SciFi plays "QPid."

exclaim exclaim exclaim exclaim

Ah-ha! Now, I've got it!

We all know Jean-Luc was Robin Hood, but who did the others play?

I'll help a bit; your 'transplants' in Sherwood forest are:

Jean-Luc
Beverly
Will
Deanna
Data
Worf
Geordi
Q
Vash

See if you can figure it out. 3nodding

Here's a quick question from one of my trivia books. I knew all but one, so that one was process of elimination. xp Anyway, have a go at this one:

Match each Captain to their respective birthplace:

Labarre, France
Indiana
Iowa
Mojave
New Orleans

Christopher Pike
James T. Kirk
Jean-Luc Picard
Benjamin Sisko
Kathryn Janeway

Jill Sherwin. The Definitive Star Trek Trivia Book, Volume II. Pocket Books; New York. 2001. Pg. 149; Ques. 63.

Parting Quote:
"I'm the best swordsman in all of Nottingham!"
"There's something you should know."
"And what would that be?"
Thwack!
"I'm not from Nottingham."

I know (or at least I think I remember right) some of them but not all. And I mean about both questions...

So I'll wait to see if someone knows all of them and if not, I'll post what I know/I can guess. smile
