kyle stabell Steel Sterling Maddy I don't remember the encyclopedia mentioning the books... maybe is a new edition? 'cause mine is several years old but I'm sure doesn't have any info found only in the books. Finally, I've made my ruling, I've explained my ruling, and, so far, the entire crew has either accepted or endorsed it. The rule will stand. I'm invoking rule "I". Further attempts to debate this will result in painsticks. I won't argue about this any more, but I do want to point out that it has been through books that Lt. Saavik being half Romulan is a canon fact.
For the last time, Books are *NOT* canon. EVER! - Kyle, at this point, I'm giving you a light warning. Do not post another message on this thread about Books being canon. If you want to discuss this, create your own thread and discuss it.

Steel Sterling NEW question! === This is an Original Series question. In ST:TNG, we see an episode, "The Royale". An alien race constructed a casino, based on a pulp fiction book owned by an Earthman, and confused for how things normally are. A) What episode in the Original Series inspired this episode? B) What did Bones leave behind that was such a big deal? C) What was the book called? D) What was wrong with Kirk's driving? smile E) How did Kirk demonstrate the Enterprise was a serious player if things got rough? F) What was the planet, or the people called by the Federation? G) What was decided would be done with the Federation's "tax"? Answer FOUR or better to post, please. (Ringers, please remember-48 hour headstart for the normal people.) smile
48 hours have passed on this one... it's free for anyone... And the other one has one more day before it's "assimilated"...

A) A Piece of the Action B) He left his communicator behind. The people had already been pollutated with the Chicago Mob Book left behind by the Horizon. With the communicator, it was feared the aliens would once again fashion their society after something left behind. C) "The Chicago Mobs of the Twenties" I think was the title of the Book. D) if I remember correctly, it sucked. E) I don't remeber exactly, but I think they beamed in a group of security personnel dressed in mobsters outfits. F) Sigma Iotia II G) The Iotians agreed to trade with the Federation, and in return, the money would be used to help re-shape the government.

F) Sigma Iotia II G) The Iotians agreed to trade with the Federation, and in return, the money would be used to help re-shape the government.
*counts* CORRECT! On four, which was the minimum, anyway.
A) Yes, "A Piece of the Action." (Although I would have accepted a description of the episode instead.) It was the Mob episode.
(For those who don't know, all the "alternate earth" episodes saved a LOT of studio money, since the sets and props and costumes were already made.)
B) There were two correct answers to this. Bones left his communicator behind. The reason this was a concern was that one component, the "transtator", was a crucial piece of electronics that could potentially revolutionize the Iotians' technology base. So, I would have accepted either answer. So, correct.
C) "Chicago Mobs of the Twenties". Yes, that was the correct title of the book that they based their society on.
D) Kirk's driving wasn't bad except for one little problem. Kirk "rode the clutch". Once the car was running, he was supposed to release the clutch, but he held the pedal down like the gas pedal. The result is that the car "lurched" and "backfired." In other words, it kept stopping and making a bang-noise. His steering wasn't bad.
E) When the building all the bosses were in was surrounded by gangsters opening fire, Kirk had the Enterprise fire a wide stun beam, stunning all the gangsters surrounding the block. "They're not dead...although they would be just as easily, if we wanted." That convinced the bosses that Kirk wasn't bluffing.
F) Correct. The planet was Sigma Iotia II, the people, the Iotians.
G) The decision that got the Enterprise off the planet was to arrange the mobsters into a syndicate, to make a corporation of them with a chain of command. They left one guy in charge, and the Federation would be above him, and their cut was 40% of the profits.
When Spock pointed out that the Federation would flip over the idea of sending a ship to collect tribute once a year, Kirk said they'd put the Federation's "cut" into a cultural enrichment fund for the Iotians, so they'd improve "despite themselves."

Steel Sterling NEW question! This is from NextGen. Tim Russ (Tuvok) fans may know that Russ was considered for the Geordi role originally. He obviously didn't get it, but he DID play at least one role in NextGen, in one episode. When someone attempted a takeover of the Enterprise, Picard was the only crewmember onboard. (It was getting a hard radiation treatment, like fumigation. Picard was trying to leave when the takeover happened.) When he was discovered, Picard claimed to be another crewman. What's the crewman's name, and what's his duty? smile
Question, prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
Picard realized that the captain would be a valuable hostage. So, he claimed to have no strategic value, and chose his name accordingly...
"Mister Mot-I'm the ship's barber." xd
This is also the episode where Picard said "A horse is a horse." (Of course of course....)

Steel Sterling NEW question. === Answer any of the following questions, or answer them all. A) There's a Ferengi Rule of Acquisition: "Never trust a man in a better suit than you." What number rule is that? B) There's a "captain's eyes only" secure code in Starfleet. What number code is that? C) What's considered the top safe speed of the Runabouts? D) What's the standard crew complement of the new Nova-class science/survey ships? ========= No, these are not "impossible to answer" for the average Trekkie. smile If one of you answers them all without cheating, you'll be able to explain why I expected someone besides me to know these PRECISE answers.

(Meaning, he should be bald)
EDIT - Hey, I just thought of something, in response to the above question. Considering the Heat on Vulcan, and the main reason for Hair, shouldn't Vulcans be bald? They have no reason to have ever evolved it. confused

You're in the ballpark on "C".
Stop and think a minute. There's a reason I asked all of these seemingly-unrelated questions together, and a reason I thought someone might be able to "run the table" and answer them all from memory.....
CORRECTION: He WAS right about the Nova-class crew being "80". I meant to ask a DIFFERENT question, and have changed the original question accordinglyI meant to ask about the DEFIANT-class ships.

Yes, all Bolians are blue and bald.
I love the incongruity of the ship's barber being of an entire RACE that has no hair. smile
I also love that Picard singled HIM out to disguise his identity.
