lostsoul052204 Just what the title says. I want to know what Goth mean to you or what you think it is. GOth is a state of being, it doesnt matter what you dress like it doesnt have to be all black, it matters not what type of music you listen to, hell you could dress like a prep or a redneck and still be a goth, its a more hightened sence of spirituality, and remembering that you are not a conformist like the rest of the suckups out there.

Sirek Actually, words goth and gothic came from a bunch of barbarian tribes from the north in europe, at the time it got its name, the romanesque style was in, and gothic was new. Because it was different from romanesque, it was naturally unliked by those whom thought romanesque was the best of the two, and thought this new style was plain ugly or barbaric, so they called it goth. You can apply the same concept to the gothic subculture and society today, because its different and not considered 'normal' by society, they labeled it ugly, so they called it goth. The barbaric tribe known as Goth originated in Germany and after a couple centuries split into the Visigoths and Ostrogoths (or whatever the hell they were).
In my opinnion, Goth is a state of being which means conforming to not conforming. Confusing maybe, but that's how I see it. According to a book in our school library, Goths are supposed to be morbidl and incredibly obsessed with death. stare

...My mother believes that the original goths were Romeo and Juliet because they refused to be alive without the other.
Her theory makes sense, but I don't think that they are the 'original' goths.
Personally, I think goth is just a state of mind. Not what you wear, the color of your hair and all of that. It's the way you are.
It means to be yourself, and not try and conform to an image. It means to hold your own thoughts, and let no one sway you. It means to be independent and non caring, yet compasionate when the time calls for it.
That's, vaguely, what I think goth means.
I've met many goths who are not morbid, who are not obsessed with death, who do not cut themselves, who do not wish to comit suicide, who do not wear all black, who do not have black hair, who are not pale. Again, it's just a state of mind.

My whole opinion on goth summed up here. Personally that's the best definition/explanation I have ever seen. But I guess if you want a shorthand version. I don't think you need to dress black, wear makeup, listen to certain genres of music, or even like death. As a matter of fact I have a lot more respect for the goths who don't do those things, or do them rarely. It's about your personality, what you like, how you feel about things, your want to learn, etc. Clothing and makeup come second.

Goth is difficult to define. The scene is broken up and scattered so far apart that there hasn't been much unity until recently, with the popularization with the internet. Because goth has never been unified, it's hard to find a singular definition. Because of this, I find it's good to cross reference various sources. Some of the sources which I share beliefs with include: http://blood-dance.net/goth/grant.htmlhttp://wikipedia.org/wiki/gothhttp://www.goth.net/goth.htmlI myself have no singular defintion, though, I do believe that goths commonly: -Are Free Thinking -Are Creative -Are Curious -Are Intellectual -Enjoy certain genres of music including (though, not limited to) goth-rock, deathrock, darkwave, dark cabaret, ethereal, ebm, industrial, and indie. -Enjoy certain styles of fashion inspired by and including (though, not limited to) 70's glam, Punk, Victorian, Militaristic, Cabaret, Renaissance, and Bohemian.

Goth to me is someone who thinks for themselves, someone who chooses to be unique over following the crowd, and someone who enjoys the finer things in life, such as theatre, art, dance, music, etc. And I mean the fine arts. That to me is goth summed up.

Mmhmm and I'm sick of people saying "goths love satan." It has nothing to do with loving satan and satan has nothign to do with goths.
goth=goth satanist=satanist
Two very different things. And those who buy those cheap bondage s**t/pants and stuff at hot topic is going through some sort of fad in high school. Everyone I see here in AZ is a poser. It makes me angry. gonk

To me goth is us. Not some scientific theory and what not. Because if its and we are gothic, then we are not individuals. The fact that someone can explain to you who you are makes the term an oxymoron, from the definitions you guys are giving. Not qouting anyone but generally the comments have been leaning towards the meaning. Self-expression, and not conforming to the way of others. But if someone says you are this or this is what goth is and you go along with it?!?!?!?!? My friends thats the exact definition of Conformity. Personally I feel no one can categorize you. Only you know how you are.

Oh that this too too sullied flesh should melt, thaw and resolve itself unto dew, or that the everlasting had not set his cannon against self slauter. Oh God! God how weary, stale, flat and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world. Fie ont a fie tis an unweeded garden that's grown to seed things rank and gross in nature posses it mearly
1. You understand this and realize that it explains exactly how you feel. 2. you are not Goth
Simply choose 1 or 2

lostsoul052204 Just what the title says. I want to know what Goth mean to you or what you think it is. the term arose because a whole bunch of the folks from the old deathrock bands(siouxsie and hte banshees, the bauhaus, alien sex fiend, etc) used to hang out at this one guy's place(i think it was andi sexgang's place...don't remember), and it was a big old victorian apartment complex called the visigoth towers. they started jokingly referring to him as count visigoth and the followers of his band as goths. the media caught wind of it and started calling all deathrockers goths. that's how it started. now what does the term as it applies to the subculture mean? well it has alot to do with intelligence and poeticism. it has alot to do with being informed, intelligent, and poetic, to simplify it.

From my many years of study: GilAskan Goth (n., adj.): 1. (n.) A supporter and member of the goth culture 2. (n.) A short-hand term for goth-rock, a genre of music developed in the early 80's whose following grew into what we now know as goths 3. (adj.) That which is related to the goth culture (i.e. "a goth book") Goths tend to [note: individual traits are characteristics will vary from goth to goth. One doesn't have to have every trait on this list to be a goth; in fact, one could have only very few and still be considered a goth. Likewise, having one or more of these traits doesn't essentially make someone a goth]: -Being an avid fan of goth-rock and related genres (deathrock, darkwave, psychobilly, etc.) -Having an active interest in or support of the goth culture -Wearing DIY clothes -Wearing thrift-store clothes -Wearing dark but warm colors -Wearing any of the numerous fashion styles developed in and associated with the goth culture (cyber-goth, romantigoth, gothic lolita, classic-goth, etc.) -Wearing ornate antique-style jewelry, typically made of silver -Wearing victorian or cabaret influenced fashion -Having a strong interest in philosophy (particularly existentiallism and romanticism) -Having a natural inclination to learn -Having a fondness of books and poetry -Having an artistic inclination or appreciation -Enjoying going to theaters, art shows, and museums -Appreciating sarcasm, satire, parody, or other forms of implied humor -Having interest in the concepts of contrast (good and evil, light and dark, etc.) -Appreciating sensual pleaures (scented candles, the touch of velvet, etc.; pleasing, refined stimulation of the senses) -An active interest in politics, religion, and the morality behind either -Being socially liberal but politically conservative (i.e. libertarianism, capitalism) -Being religiously experimental (studying and practicing multiple religions) -Having moderate takes on opinions -Disliking small-talk, prefering serious conversation -Are willing to hear and accept the viewpoints of others

Dr_lecter1988 It was originallya subculture of the Punk scene in britain. they chose the name because the architecture was so dark it fit their scene. now i think it's been perverted by thinks like the colombine shooting and the religious groups relating it to satanists who arent really the true version of satanists. Goth is just a mind set i know people that i consider goth who dress in jeans and a t-shirt but have similar tastes to those who dress in Tripp bondage pants and a trenchcoat over a witty t-shirt with fishnet. I think we need to stop using stereotypes and classification. but thats just me. I agree 3nodding
