"There's rules against interfering with another Noble's actions," said Lady. "How do you think Lady Melany and Ezra didn't ******** kill each other? They were like, the only people in the Court besides Noeh and Adoelle and they had all that hate-UST. They were like twenty seconds from invoking Homestuck-style bad romance at any given moment. If someone wants an unwilling tithe, we can't stop them without invoking the Lord's Prerogative and getting ******** owned into destroying the person trying to stop the unwilling tithing."

Word vomit.

"We can't do anything without altering the original document of the Court. And it is a document. I've seen it." She got up and, using her finger because she was a damn showoff, drew a line down the middle of the board and wrote:

Need:
-Founding document

"We can't make any changes without that."

AND THIS IS WHY NOEH IS STILL INCENTIVIZED

Jeremiah inclined his head towards Lady, eyebrow raised and then nodded. "All of that," the word vomit, "is exactly why things need to shift and change and, yes, we will need that document."

He shifted, looked at Lady and then the rest of the Nobles gathered. "However, unless we're all on board for making changes, then there's no point in finding it. If we can agree, then we pursue this- we get the document, we make changes."

... and he knew where to go looking for it but would get to that in a moment.

"So, fellow Nobles, do you want to change things? If yes, then we can put a wrap on this meeting and meet again once we have original court document."

"I think everyone is on the same sort of pages that 'changes' need to be made. It cannot be continued as it was. However, whether we all can agree on every change..." She shrugged. It remained to be seen, although Temperance was trying not to be horribly pessimistic.

"What sort of rule prevents nobles from interfering with or even killing each other? Also, where can we even begin to look for this document?" Temperance hoped whomever found it would not just alter it then and there. It would be horribly unfair, and not something she would past some of the court members. She wished she had her notebook on her. For now, she'd just have to hope her mind was content being a steel trap and not a sieve. Temperance tugged uncomfortably on her skirt, feeling awkward for even talking. After all, she wasn't really a noble yet.

"Were you to strike down another Noble, the rest of us would be compelled to put an end to you, your tithe if you have one and the fetches that serve you." Jeremiah shifted, bright eyes focused on Temperance. The way he looked at her was not one that seemed highly positive.

His attention shifted then, briefly to Algie and then focused on Shiloh (who was given a look that said we need to talk or we're about to be doing a thing) before speaking once more. "I've an idea where to look for it, as the document is likely within the Court itself."

"So we find the Charter," Alg straightened and glanced at all of them, "Bring it back here and review it. It's a start."

The void of ideas seemed telling. Either they didn't know what they were getting into as nobles or they didn't care to commune as a group. Perhaps they all just needed time. If whiteboards worked better, perhaps homework would too.

"And when we meet up again, perhaps everyone has some input on what they want from all of this. I know not everyone was put in this position willingly, but you are all nobles - or will be - and an equal voice in this group." Even the tithes who were present.

"Nobles are tremendously powerful within the otherworld," said Lady from her spot near the whiteboard, where she was still standing. She had turned her attention to Temperance directly. "We can compel the residents of this world to obey us, form our own little fiefdoms, things like that, if we want. What limits us is the Prerogative, which prevents us from interfering with another noble's lands, tithes, fetches, and indeed their very lives. There's also something called the geas, but I never saw that put into use. Every time someone threatened to use it, the other person backed down." She shrugged. "A lot of the other beings know what it is, but don't use it out of respect for the process that makes us what we are. If they did use it, though, we'd have to do whatever they wanted."

She rubbed a hand along her jaw, looking at the whiteboard. "Lady Melany had it last I saw it," she said. "It's probably in her rooms at the Court, if anywhere."

The look she gave Algernon was venomous. If it could kill a dude, it probably would have. "When you think of what you want from this," she said to the group, instead, "don't be limited by what you think you can accomplish. We're working as a group and the document of the Court is a very powerful format. If you can dream it, chances are that if we all agree on it, we can be it, as well. This could, if we all chose, go beyond no unwilling tithing to something much, much greater. Ask your friends. Ask your allies. Ask people you don't like. Changes made will affect everyone who uses magic, noble or not.

"I still think we should just destroy it, though."

Algie was immune to venomous glares from angry teenagers. He was a teacher. He was also very gracious about being blamed by others for them not contributing to major world decisions. He handled it all with very little reaction.

"All of which is why it's important we all contribute," Because if they were all collectively making decision that affected the whole world, then the blame would come back to them in the end. Someone would blame them if they didn't like the choices. He wasn't sure if some of those present could deal with that pressure.

"So why don't you actually explain the consequences of tearing down the system, burning the document, damning the man.." He waved his hand to say 'so on and so forth', "as well as you're explaining the consequences of other choices. You've been involved longer than any of us, and lately things have been changed without anyone's say, things that changed the world-" The cage being a huge example, "-so let's lay it all out here. Give everyone substantial food for thought for when we gather again."

Because that's what they were here for.

"I'm not a child," Lady snapped. "If we're going to be equals, stop mocking me, stop being a petty little b***h and start actually discussing what you want! You keep saying, oh, everyone contribute, but as far as I've seen we're all trying but you two sprung this on us without so much as a by-your-leave! We can't be summoned like dogs, didn't your... your people teach you how to request the presence of another noble or anything?"

She took a deep breath. It seemed like she was trying to get herself under control, but evidently she didn't do so well because the next thing out of her mouth was: "I got kidnapped when I was sixteen. I thought I'd only been gone for six months. So sure, from your perspective I was gone for nine years and I've been involved for longer than all of you combined--but really? Comparatively I only got involved in all of this last February. And I haven't gotten a say in anything. And I'm telling you everything I can! The consequences for burning it down are the same for building it up, things will change but maybe--you can't build a melody without a beat beneath it and right now the beat we're trying to work off has been built with hate and pain and abuse, so we should strip it down to brass tacks and build it back up better if the otherworld even needs it, so--so maybe it'll be better, then."

Her shoulders were shaking. Her everything was shaking. Her green eyes were welling up with tears. "And I hate being here and I hate being what I am and if you want to treat me like a child for it then fine but don't do it while insisting that I have an equal voice because all you've done is mock everything I had to say. At least Melany only beat me. She didn't pretend I was her equal while she did it!"

Julian raised his hand. Like he was in school.

"How about asking the super old Nobles instead of the teenager Noble?" he suggested, a bit sardonically. He was a little irritated Lady was being put on the spot like that. "Twist their arm, or-or use the geas thingy. Shiloh, you know it, right? Anyway, I promised my patron this wouldn't make her late for taco night at home."

They left.

Shiloh had been quiet since his first concern. He'd been listening as the group talked in circles, as some voices spoke up and others died down. His gaze behind the veil was sliding across to everyone's face; everyone except for Beel who stood behind him. Lady stepped up and said her piece, gave out all of her knowledge—and honestly, she had the most knowledge out of anyone here it seemed. Maybe Algernon hadn't meant to be goading, but Shiloh watched thread after thread snap behind Lady's eyes. He knew that look. He'd been in that position. Hell, aside from Lady, he was the second youngest here. He briefly caught Jeremiah's glance before s**t hit the fan.

Shiloh stood up quickly, Beel moving to say something behind him—don't—but the sound caught garbled in his throat. "For ******** sake." His frustration was whispered under his breath as he stomped right up to the front of the room. The mention of Melany cut him deep into his skin. He could feel the bruises, sympathize completely, watched the room as Julian left with Lady.

"Respect would be ******** nice," His voice was venomous, "Especially since out of all the Nobles present, I'm willing to bet you had it the easiest." No fire, no beating, no getting beat for other people's faults, no teeth ripping, no gaslighting, no day after day after night after night of psychological torture. Unless Thorne had stooped to that; and then he'd laugh.

"And I'm not using the geas on anyone unless I ******** have to!" He yelled at Julian down the hall, "It's bad enough that s**t even exists in the first ******** place." To the rest of the group he added, "I'm leaving. Call me if you find the document or whatever the ********, I don't care about jack s**t unless we're actually going to work on changing this."

He turned on his heel, his hand silently signaling for Beel to follow, calling something unintelligible to those in the room down the hallway.

"Shut the ******** up," Alexis said, their voice honeyed poison - keen, sharp, the sort of tone they'd perfected during their time with Alois. They shook their head vigorously, a cascade of clacking bones surrounding them with white noise. "If you want to be in charge, then learn on your own, leave her alone." They stepped forward, finally, keeping even with where Lady had sat; holding keen, dark eye contact with Algernon.

"If anyone would know, it'd be you two -" their eyes flickered to Jeremiah - "you were voluntary." It wasn't a question. "You n'your life experience to let you find what you want to know. Don't tell me you did this just because you ********> the Court as it is. I thought I'd be able to protect my friends and Scholz told me I'd be better as a weapon because I wasn't ******** human while I was under his care. Anything that lets that ever happen again -- I'll kill it. I'll kill every part of it. If the older Nobles won't tell us how to remake this because they're afraid they'll lose their power, you hold them down and force them to agree."

Jeremiah finally - finally! - pinched the bridge of his nose. He was, in fact, smoldering in irritation (it wasn't a fire - not yet - but it was, strangely enough, smelt). He would have to catch Shiloh at another point - he was already gone - but Alexis was speaking-

"Noble Tucker, as Shiloh previously mentioned: respect would be bloody ******** nice," The words were said in a calm voice, despite the fact that he looked far from pleased (though that had more to do with the fact that Lady had to be escorted in tears and the meeting dissolving as it did). "So kindly, do not tell another Noble in their domain to shut up."

He looked then to the rest, eyes bright. "Consider this meeting over. We will gather again, hopefully will calmer heads, and be able to discuss what we'd like to see done with the Court- with the document in hand.

"Your presence will be requested at a future date, so please look to your fetches to have the information when the time comes." He let out a breath. "I would appreciate if, despite how sour this has gone, those remaining would give thought to what they want to see the Court changed to- even if we have to tear it down to the foundation and rebuild. It cannot continue as it has been and we must improve how it is perceived both outside and within."

His head inclined and Jeremiah turned back to the whiteboard, fingers snapping to make it disappear.

At some point, Rabbit had pulled a cigarette out of... not his pocket, since his outfit didn't have any, but definitely somewhere, considering it was present and he was holding it. It gave him something to stare at while the meeting went to s**t around him, something to focus on while mommy and daddy and daddy and daddy and daddy and Alexis shouted and sneered and generally made him feel two feet tall. Ignorant too. Was he really immortal now? Could Gloom decide he wanted ear scritches forever and somehow compel Rabbit to scritch until he died? He needed a drink, but he'd settle for his smoke. Maybe lighting it would make Temp frustrated enough to yell too, and then he could yell back and... no. That would be bad. Bad Noble.

He wasn't going to yell and he wasn't going to smoke in Jeremiah's house. He was going to creak to his feet and sigh and say,

"We should go."

His tone defined his words as a statement, perhaps even an order, but the look he gave Temperance clearly asked her to confirm. They should go, right?

"I'll think about what you both said."

The look she shot Rabbit clearly said 'Light that and I will take it from you', but she stood and busied herself straightening her clothing. "Yes, nothing more will get done tonight." There were many things she could have said, should have said, but did not, for fear of over-speaking, of ******** up again and again and again.

"Ready when you are."
