This had been going on for quite a few minutes and Sullivan wasn’t happy with it. He huffed, cheeks puffing out in response to Mana’s continued denial. If she wasn’t going to hand it over willingly, then he would take it. Flipping his hand from its palm-out position he reached out to try and get a hold on the foreign object. Mana was still enough to allow him to grab onto one of the exposed ends of the item. Well… that was good…

… At least until Sullivan tried to tug it away. Suddenly, the Rowlet was clutching with a force that the blue-haired man wasn’t aware she had. Once more, he was frowning as he tried to pry the object free from her beak, the only budging that occurred was Mana rotating her head in conjunction with Sullivan’s movements. He didn’t even have a chance to apply any kind of force. He’d jerk left and her head would follow. Jerk right? Same response. Try to twist all the way around? Well, Sullivan discovered the Rowlet’s unique ability to rotate her head (at least to his eyes) a full 360 degrees, which given she was already nothing but a circle to begin with made it even more confusing.
That left only one option. With a breath, he untwisted (he didn’t want to go and hurt her in anyway after all) and then gave a swift yank towards himself, hoping the sudden action would startle her and make her loosen her grip…

… Or freak her out terribly; something that he had not intended. Mana did release for a moment before giving an angry squawk and latching back on, purposely nipping Sullivan in the process. Once more, the trainer found himself yelping, yanking his hand back with a wince as he checked for injury. Luckily, she hadn’t broken the skin with her nipping nor bit hard enough to draw blood, but it had still hurt. Geez.
Of course, that would have to wait. The provocation had clearly upset Mana and Sullivan snapped his attention to stare wide eyed as she immediately took flight and started violently flapping away through the air and away from him.
It took a moment for his brain to process that his pokemon was pretty much ‘running away’ but once it did he immediately scrambled to his feet (or wheels rather) to give chase., Junpei, at least, was on the ball, already leading the way after the fleeing Rowlet. A good thing honestly…

Sullivan was right back to picking up speed as he crossed over to Route 2; it was flatter terrain compared to Route 3, with fewer hills and bridges. Noah was right back to clinging tightly to the man’s back as the wind whipped past their faces. The Rockruff was keeping stride which was impressive and the Rowlett had taken flight at some point, keeping up (as well as her stubby wings would allow) through the air. The quick travel did give a slight chance for the Dewott to enjoy the view though his focus was primarily on getting to Lafayette and making sure the man was okay.
Something Sullivan was just as interested in as well. Maybe not on the same level as the Dewott; they certainly didn’t share the same attachment to the man or anything, but the blue-haired fellow was just as concerned that the fellow was doing all right. He was certain Inoke had made it there by now and that hopefully the Noivern hadn’t caused to much of a ruckus. Maybe that was his real worry; that the dragon would cause trouble. The sooner they arrived the sooner he could be certain. Luckily, the Hau’oli City was in sight; the city skyline rapidly coming into view. It wasn’t long before the route gate appeared as well and without any hesitation, Sullivan kicked it up a notch, zipping past through and into the city limits in the direction of the hospital.

Sullivan and crew were out of Hau’oli City and on Route 2, heading for their next destination; Verdant Cavern. He figured it was about time to start taking the island challenge seriously and the first step to that would be challenging the first champion. There they’d find Ilima who, as far as Sullivan knew, was a dedicated former student of the local Trainers’ school. Which meant he more than likely knew quite a bit about pokemon. Not that he was worried; there were different things to know about the creatures they shared the world with and he was confident in his own team. They’d get through it, no problem!

It had been dim in route 3, and route 2 was little better than the light of dusk. The light of Hou'oli City rose from the distance like a beacon, and Takumi didn't really mind if he looked like a zombie mareep walking towards it. He was just grateful there was no one here to see him being completely unprepared for anything. His eyes were getting gummy with fatigue, so when he shuffled faster after seeing the black swath of a road he didn't see anything at his feet and tripped over a heavy root. Cursing, he growled constantly as he picked himself up and walked into the city.

Sullivan was a bit panicked as he tried to make his way back to heal his pokemon; Hau’oli City was still a little bit away and Junpei was responding weakly in his arms. It was concerning and semi-unnerving to know that now, he was in the position of caretaker for a pokemon that more than often served as his. A nearby individual seemed to notice the concern etched across the man’s face and approached out of curiosity.
”Excuse me sir, everything alright?” The young woman spoke. Sullivan didn’t immediately notice though, gaze focused elsewhere. The young woman frowned, leaning in and gently tapping him on the shoulder.
"Sir?” Sullivan whipped around at that, blinking and staring wide eyed. Junpei shifted at the response and looked at the woman, giving a light bark of his own. She stared a moment, raising a hand over her mouth.
”Oh! Did you just finish the trial challenge?” Sullivan squinted and didn’t immediately respond, which seemed to concern the woman. He freed up a hand, making sure Junpei was still carefully help before signing, tapping an index finger to the side of his ear before repeating the tap near his mouth. The woman, while not seeming to know exactly what he was saying, seemed to realize what the signing was for.
”Oh! I’m… I’m sorry. I…,” Sullivan gave a gentle smile, raising a hand and shaking his head. It was common enough. She looked a little uneased; probably because she didn’t know signing. Still, he gestured to Junpei and then to his pokeballs, pointing back at the cave and giving a nod. The woman watched intently and nodded. ”So yes? Do your pokemon need healing?” She spoke slowly Sullivan noted, though that was probably more out of uncertainty on how to communicate as she seemed to make odd gestures with her speech. It was a nice attempt at least. He nodded again and saw her smile, the woman offering her hands out.
”I can heal them for you!” She remarked, gesturing back to the little sign area she’d been standing at before approaching him. He looked over and squinted, seeing the little image of a pokemon center sign and a medical cross; a first aid station? Perfect! A grin exploded over his face and his head nodded quickly before he snatched off his pokeballs and handed them and Junpei over to her. This was… honestly a relief…

Once Susan, which was the young woman’s name, had healed up his team (apparently there was a small center set up along the route just for situations like this) Sullivan thanked her with a written note. He didn’t want to make her any more uncomfortable after all with the communication issues. She was more than happy to help though and showed as much, gently petting Junpei as the Rockruff was back up and to his normal perky self.
Sullivan gave a wave as the pair headed off. With that trial down, Sullivan felt relieved. While he was still shocked at how difficult that challenge was he was grateful they’d made it through it all the same. The next decision though was what to take on next… the Kahuna or the next gym? Probably the kahuna would be a better option. Would he potentially be tougher that the trial or the champion? He wouldn’t know until he tried…

Sullivan headed a bit away from the center before finally unleashing Mana to check up on her. He was certainly she wouldn’t be happy with what had occurred and judging by the cute, but vicious scowl she gave him before promptly turning her head a full 90 degrees in the opposite direction, he was right. He couldn’t rightly blame her though; he really should’ve judged the strength of the totem pokemon better and would work to avoid making those mistakes in the future.
Kneeling he tried to reach a hand out to pet her, only to receive a vicious flapping of wings to indicate she did not want him touching her. She took to the air and flew away a few feet, landing with her back to the man. Yup, she was unhappy. Well, this was certainly going to be a challenge to overcome. Sullivan glanced at Junpei who looked rather miffed at the bird’s reaction. Not a surprise either; the Rockruff was rather protective and didn’t particularly appreciate Mana’s attitude. It was hard to fault anyone’s feelings at this point. The man thought a moment about what he could do before digging in his bag, something that did catch The Rowlet’s attention.

The Rowlet kept her back to the pair though her head was turned just slightly to continue listening to what Sullivan was doing. If only to make sure he didn’t try to force her back into the pokeball or something; he seriously had enough nerve. Just tossing her out there to get beat down so viciously! Her pride was wounded and there was absolutely nothing he could do to make up for this travesty against her pokemon persons. Well, almost.
Sullivan produced a malasada and it took a bit of work for her not to immediately give her attention. Junpei glanced over at his trainer and gave a little bark, looking uncertain about this potential bribery. Sullivan raised a finger to his lips; he was aware it wasn’t good to be bribing but well… Mana was new and he’d yet to properly find out what was necessary to earn back her trust. Plus, well… malasadas were excellent bribery material. With the one in hand he stood and moved over to the Rowlet, who continue to give him the cold shoulder, though it was apparent she knew he was there. Kneeling, Sullivan kept a little space between the two of them, offering out the delicious treat to the owl.
She kept her back to the man though, feathers ruffling a little as she simply closed her eyes and gave a huff. Sullivan maintained his offering, trying to give a gentle smile, and ruffling the paper to try and draw her attention. As hard as she tried, he could read her body language and tell that she held an interest. Even if she was trying not to show it.

Mana was impressed at Sullivan’s persistence; they’d been in the same position at least two minutes now and he hadn’t resinded the delicious offering yet nor returned her to the pokeball. Either he was keen on gaining her forgiveness or he was dumb. She wasn’t certain but it was becoming harder for her to resist the tempting offer. She really did enjoy that last bit of malasada she’d received and this time he seemed to be offering her a full one. Of course, she maintained the cold shoulder treatment; if she gave in too easily them well, Sullivan might’ve thought her easily bought off.
Sullivan was paying attention to her antics though. It was his level of patience that allowed her to continue as she did, though he could tell she seemed to be slowly breaking down. He thought a moment before finally withdrawing the treat, something that caused the Rowlet to stiffen a bit. He proceeded to tear it in half, turning and offering the chunk to Junpei. The Rockruff blinked and barked, happily taking the part and beginning to eat away. Now that caught Mana’s attention and suddenly the Rowlet spun around and flailed her wings, giving an agitated hoot, though Sullivan couldn’t hear it. How dare he offer her that treat and then just pass it out all willy nilly! What was this game he was trying to play?! The young man just looked back at her nonchalantly before ripping off a piece and popping it into his own mouth, chewing slowly before giving her a slight shrug. You snooze, you lose.
The Rowlet flailed her wings even harder, expression beginning to waiver as tears seemed to start sprouting from the corners of her eyes which caught him off guard. Goodness, she was an emotional one wasn’t she. He raised a hand to indicate she calm down, digging out another full malasada and offering it to her. The Rowlet stopped in her dramatics, blinking, and staring. She… she was so confused. He unwrapped it and set it down, pushing it toward her with a grin before he took a bite of the one he was still consuming before offering the rest to Junpei. Mana just watched, making sure that there wasn’t some sort of… deceptive trickery going on before diving in and eating the dessert meant entirely for her.

Sullivan was beginning, if not slowly, to understand Mana and how she worked. She was certainly dramatic and emotional and clearly liked things the way she wanted them. Which was all fine and good, when the situation wasn’t important but he certainly couldn’t have her acting like this when he needed her to be a team player. They’d honestly have to work on that. For now, though, he’d appeased her salty attitude with food (which really worked for anything) and so he could concentrate on their next course of action.
He plopped back to sit down, having been balancing on his skates the entire time, and pulled out his communicator to look at his options. They’d completed the first island challenge along with the first gym leader… he could take on the kahuna here too, which he wanted to try but something caught his eye. There was…. An event going on… and there’d be a luau in Iki Town afterwards. Sullivan frowned; Iki Town was the same place where kahuna Hala resided. Which meant… it would probably be very busy? Crowded? The kahuna might even be busy with the luau.
Which meant getting his challenge done might have to wait. Which was a shame though, he might drop by to visit the luau and enjoy the festivities later. Why not? If there was anything that he loved about Alola it was the festivals and island life. It was practically heresy to miss either. How could he live with himself?

Sullivan gave a silent chuckle to himself. He’d keep the thought in the back of his mind; for now, though it looked like they need to head back to Hau’Oli City to head to the next island. That was where the next leader was as well as the next trial challenge if he was interested. He really needed to bulk out his team at some point too. Tucking the device away he got to his feet and checked Junpei and Mana. The Rockruff had finished his treat a while ago, cleaning the cream from his muzzle; Mana was on the last few crumbs in the wrapping; he was certain she’d eat the paper too if he hadn’t taken it away from her. He gathered the trashed and threw it away in a nearby trashcan, picking up Mana as she preened herself. She still seemed a little miffed at him but allowed her to carry her for the time being.
Sullivan gave a little smile and rubbed the top of her head, glancing back at Junpei to make sure the pup was ready to move before beginning to roll along the route and back in the direction of the city once again.

The berry field! Adder bolted up Route 2, but by the time he reached the top of the hill, his lungs were on fire, and he was feeling the weight of the case. He didn't have any larger pokemon to help him, either. Damn, if only he still had Decidueye... or if only Charmander had evolved. He lugged the case off, running for the berry field, and hopping the fence. He could try and hide among the trees.... not that he had much of an option. If he didn't stop soon, he was going to be sick...
Dropping the case, he collapsed onto the ground, pulling himself towards some bushes and trying to obscure himself. He ought to listen for Ashe, but instead, he started fidgeting with the case. Just what was in this, anyway...?

Ashley followed Adder up the hill and towards the berry fields, his own breathing though not so much to have him slow down. This was certainly not the workout he was expecting to get and was rather expectant to have it end soon. This was ridiculous; he’d gone from the initial shock, to angry, to annoyed at this point.
Jumping the fence, the Frenchman strolled out and came to a pause in the open area, taking a moment to try and steady his breath to listen. He’d seen Adder scramble his way up here and apparently struggling in the process, which mean he hadn’t gotten far. Rustling in nearby bushes caught his attention, as well as the sound of odd fiddling. Was the boy trying to open the case? Really? Really? Maybe he had a death wish or something? That was the only conclusion Ashley could come to in dealing with someone who had seemed so insistent that he might be dangerous. Or maybe the boy was… special.
Either or, it ended now. Quietly, Ashley snuck his way towards the bushes, spotting Adder’s failed hiding form and his case. Without hesitation, he growled and lashed a hand into the bush to latch onto the back of the boy’s shirt and drag him out of hiding. "Got you, you little miscreant." He narrowed a dark gaze at Adder. "Ze silly game is over."
