Wilhelm eyed the little black bird, wanting nothing to do with the summoned creature. Deciding rather than continue prodding the mage for information that he was adamantly not sharing, he turned and listened to Sevira. Leave it to her to figure out the elf lass was actually the princess of Goleta.

"Wait just a moment now...Sevira, while having someone with the gift of healing would be incredibly useful," he started, closing his eyes and leaning his had back against his shoulders. "We cannot just take the Princess of Goleta with us, it could cause a rift between our nations. We could be accused of the attack, even if the princess should speak on our behalf. If anything, she needs to be sent back to Goleta with a heavily armed escort of our finest troops to insure her safety."

He drummed his fingers on the table, returning an eye towards the bird that refused to move. "Old man, I do apologize for my ill-mannered attitude towards you. I've not even had the courtesy to ask your name." He lifted his gaze from the bird to the man, not trusting either of them in their silence.

"She was already attacked before in the palace of Kerash. What's to say she won't be attacked while on the road? We need everyone we can get and she did walk in here looking for guards. Technically, one of us can be her protector. The Goleta people are allies to us Fashrades any-way, what have we to lose? She's better off in the care of the finest swordsmen in Maeven than with any other soldier," Sevira pointed out.

True, she knew Wilhelm was right that it could be a problem, but if Elesmira...Amira...kept her identity secret then no one would know. She knew it would be hard, but she also knew that the little lass wouldn't let them ship her back home unless she knew she was not in danger. And unless the host of Kamawanaiyo was found, the demons would be after her to use her royal blood as a Blood Rite Summoning to try and bring the dark witch out. If the group wanted the dark witch to remain sealed, they needed to keep an eye on the Elven girl.

She turned to the old mage and did in fact realise that there had been no formal introductions. "If you are going to come with us, sir, I do think you ought know our names. You may address me as Sevira, everyone does. This is my good friend, Wilhelm. We call him General Brightshield from time to time," she admitted kindly.

Amira was about to throw a tantrum with the way she was being treated like a child, even if she pretty much was, when Sevira came to her aid. Finally, someone knew that keeping an eye on her instead of sending her away! She had skills to prove she wasn't just a Princess and she wanted to take part in making sure the worlds darkest evil wasn't allowed to return.

"It's just as Lady Sevira said, they won't stop until they get me. They want to use my blood to try and find the witch or something. They already tried to get my brother, Lucra, but our mages put him in a special coma that prevents further harm from coming to him. So now they want me because they know they can't get my parents. I don't want anyone seeing me as a petty child of riches and fineries when I can play a part in this as much as any soldier!" she huffed.

She stood there in the corner, less afraid and more determined to prove her worth. She stood with her arms folded and her hip popped out, looking very stubborn and set in her ways. When she came to a decision, she wouldn't back down. She would go home when the threat had passed. Until then, she wasn't going anywhere.

As soon as Wilhelm apologized to Maliarc for his bad manners, the mage lightened up, and the bird flew back to him, landing on his shoulder. "It's quite alright. A man in your position would be understandably annoyed and suspicious towards a mage like me." A quick shake of his head accompanied his words to pardon the mans attitude. He turned to look at his bird. "This bird is how I found out. Nobody thinks a bird a sentient being, so he can see and hear things I cannot. It takes a tremendous amount of concentration, but if used properly, I can use him as a medium to "spy", although I've only ever used him to gather information about the world while I lived at home."

He got up and retrieved his staff, which he then planted both hands to steady himself on, and his grimoire, which mysteriously disappeared into his robes, before smiling at the two soldiers. "My name is Maliarc Varaco, semi novice mage. The only secret I hide is a secret that has no bearing on this mission. 'Tis a personal thing and nothing more." He took a quick pause to put his hand on his heart. "I promise this with my life." With his words came a bow, only low enough to signal respect.

He hoped his honesty this time around would be met with more favor than his natural secretive demeanor. He disliked revealing much about himself as he had dealt in the taboo in the past, and it was often received poorly, so he tended to be much more careful now. "Although the circumstances are poor, it is a pleasure to meet your acquaintances."

Grinning at last, Wilhelm stood. Finally, a straight answer from the mage and quite the words from the princess. "Well then, I am satisfied now. Also princess, if that's how you feel," he said quietly, taking off his breastplate and tossing it with the rest of his armor, staring at Amira. "Playing a part as much as any soldier, let's see what your fellows in Goleta taught you about combat." He strode towards the door, motioning for the elfin lass to follow. Heading towards the door of the pub, he snagged a sword from an off-duty soldier. He attempted to protest, but was too drunk to make coherent speech. "Don't worry lad, I'll get it back to ya."

The training square was empty, the recruits were still running. Or they slipped off to play around, but they wouldn't enjoy the consequences of that one. He weighed the swords absently, both were nearly identical in weight and length. A simple short sword with a blade roughly two and a half feet in length, with another foot covering the handle and cross guard. He grabbed the flat of the blade, holding the handle out towards Amira. "Let's see if you know the basics of protecting yourself in martial combat. While your role is as our medic, knowing how to use a blade is just as important with such small numbers. Call this a crash course in General Blightshield's School of Combat."

Once she had grasp of the handle, he released it and stepped back. He tore the sleeves off his cheap tunic, one at a time, letting them fall into the dirt. Scars of varying shapes and severity lined the muscular lines of each arm, either showing that the general was easily injured or never backed down. "The rules are simple. We continue until you cut me, or until exhaustion takes us. Maliarc, it would be wise for you to practice with Sevira as well. I'll be watching to see your skill with a blade." With those words, he walked towards a nearby tree and snapped off a stout branch, clearing it was offshoots. It was about two feet in length and about a half inch thick. "I'll be using this, Elesmira. Bruises, while painful, are far easier to deal with."

He knew that time was short on locating the unknown knight, but he had to make sure that Amira could protect herself if Sevira and himself were occupied fighting other combatants. He assumed Maliarc was adept at using magic, but magic didn't always work. The chances of his magic working against the Dreaded Witch weren't very high, either, should the stories about her be true.

Sevira chuckled as Wilhelm decided to give Amira a crash course in fighting. she merely let a smile cross her lips and sat on the table beside Maliarc. She folded her arms and leaned back before thinking of what to do next. Wilhelm left for the small training square outside the tavern and she knew she had to see the girl try and hit him. "I think a sparring scenario can wait. Still, we should see the girl give him a good run around," she laughed.

She got up and collected Wilhelm's armor in her arms before turning to Maliarc. "Shall you join us outside?" she questioned as she opened the door to the room they were in. Soldiers looked her way but said nothing as she seemed to have control over the situation. She waited to see Maliarc stand and follow before moving. Respect and consideration was key to forming any kind of team bond. If they were going to defeat Kamawanaiyo before she could return, they needed to trust one another.

Amira was not expecting to be fighting anyone, lest a huge man who was a General in the Fashrade Army. She held the sword in her arms, worry written on her face. A sword wouldn't have been her choice in weaponry, she'd have much rather gone for a bow and arrow. She'd gone on many training "hunts" with her father using her arrow to shoot targets in the shape of animals. While she was no expert, she at least had a chance with that. This sword was heavy and cumbersome for her, but she thought she ought to at least humor the large man. She took a stance she thought would be one a swordsman would use. In truth, her feet were too far apart and her point of balance wasn't center. As she lunged forward, Wilhelm easily moved to the side and thwacked the stick into her spine, not too hard but hard enough for her to know she'd have been killed. She let out a groan, less in pain and more in anger of her own foolishness and prepared to attack again.

This time, as she went forward to strike, she knew she'd miss and put the sword to her back. While the stick would have been cut on her sword and not hit her spine, she found the stick against her ribs. He must have seen her move the sword back and changed for a rib strike. She readied herself for another attack and paused for a moment. She tied her hair back and thought for a moment as she watched him. Large opponent, used to a large sword, accustomed to armor. An idea came to her mind and she took a smaller stance compared to before. She held the sword in one arm, not fully extended but still reaching out, and had her other hand at the ready with her feet more or less in a back stance, weight over her back leg. She moved forward and back slightly, beckoning Wilhelm to strike. As he stepped forward, she did as well, moving slightly to the side knowing her small size was something she should take advantage of. She thrust the sword forward with her right hand and let a grin creep across her face when she lightly knicked his bicep with the blade. It fell from her hands from the weight being too much to handle with one hand.

"I....did it?" she breathlessly asked.

Alfie walked up to the dark-skinned gypsy in almost complete silence before bursting out in a loud giggle next to her. "Are you a gypsy?! What are you doing here in Maeven?! Do you have to find something?! Do you want some help!?" he asked in quick concession so much so it sounded like one sentence instead of multiple questions. The instant she mentioned hexes he knew she was a gypsy. He let a wide grin cover his face and followed after her, more because he wanted to know the answers to his other questions. He was surprised she was walking towards some scarred guy in a torn tunic and pants and a small Elvish girl who seemed to tiny to wield a sword.

➳➳➳➳

Jaelle had watched someone walk out of the local tavern, with some boar sign on it, and noticed one carried a sword. Was this some sick Fashrade tradition...some public execution? No, the man broke a stick and she took up a stance. Sparring. Suddenly, the boy she saw before was right next to her asking her a million questions a second. "Aye! Back off before I hex you, boy," she spat out. She turned her head to see the girl lunge a few times before managing a tiny scratch on the man. Was it her intention? She walked closer, noticing the boy following her like some lost puppy. She rolled her eyes and made her way to the training square to see if she could find out more of what was going on. The faces of both of them...seemed familiar...and something felt like it was pulling her there. She didn't question it.

Wilhelm seemed to be in a far better mood with Maliarcs answer, and the mage breathed a sigh of relief. Distrust was far too common and would be the death of this world if it continued to rule over peoples emotions. The direction he had decided to go, however, was one Maliarc was happy with. Luckily for him, Severa was more than happy put their training on hold. Making her way to the door, she asked if he was going to join them outside to watch a princess get schooled in swordplay.

"Of course." he agreed with a smile. Hobbling along with his staff, he walked through the door after Sevira and outside towards their two companions. While he wasn't particularly interested in watching swordplay, he was interested in the young elven lass. He wasn't sure what to call her just yet;after all, he couldn't call her by her given name, lest somebody overhear and find out who she was.

"I do hope you'll forgive me for not practicing swordplay though. I'm not sure I could actually defend myself with a sword even if my life depended on it." His admission was probably not a surprise. To them he was an old man, and he was honestly surprised Wilhelm still thought he should practice swordplay. Even if Maliarc himself knew he wasn't really that old, his body had been changed, and he certainly felt the powerlessness in his muscles.

"That being said, I'm confident in my abilities as a mage to be an asset." While he didn't feel the need to reiterate that he would be useful, he felt he needed to clarify something. The idea of leaving a not entirely reassuring statement in the air didn't sit well with him. He fell silent and let his words hang in the air when they got to the training square.

From her place standing beside the training square along with Maliarc, Sevira smiled as the girl seemed to at least understand what should happen. Maybe she didn't have the skills or strength, but she had a good mind. The right sword style would have to be found for her, as a broadsword would be too hard for her to handle. As she watched, two figures approached from the side near the marketplace. She placed a hand on her sword and walked forward to intercept them.

"Can I help you?" she bluntly asked. She noticed one was likely a mage from his demeanour and clothes, the other a gypsy very noticeable by her clothing and skin tone. She wondered what the girl was doing so far from her people. She knew they never travelled away from their own and never once walked into a major city, let alone a capital kingdom. Something of dire importance must have brought her here. But the boy, she narrowed her eyes at him as she thought, he was another story. Why was he here?

"I won't ask again. What do you want?" she barked at them.

Alfie was taken back by her words. Why be so mean to him? Well, she did have a point in them just strolling over without reason. As he was about to speak, the girl pushed him to the side and gave him a look of "stay quiet". He wondered what she was on about and what she was doing in this city. Maybe she'd answer his questions from before. He slid his hands through his hair and rested them on the back of his neck. Fingers intertwined, he kept his arms there and listened. In the corner of his eye, the old mage got his attention. Maybe he'd be his mentor!

➳➳➳➳

"Forgive the intrusion, Dame. My name is Jaelle, and I have come from lands afar searching for you and your companions here today. This may sound strange to you, but I suppose your mage friend can vouch for me here when I say that fate guides me to assist you in your quest. I have seen visions of what the future may hold and I wish it not end that way. I have left my people for a time to do what I can. If I may assist you, with your permission, I would be honored," she stated in a respectful and intellectual manner. Many foreigners wouldn't even know what to call a female knight, many using the incorrect term "sir" but she was learned. She knew what to say and what to do. And, as a gypsy, she had skills that the group could use. She hoped.

"Hm?"

It was obvious the mage was having a hard time figuring out just exactly what was going on between the young elven lass and the hardened commander. Was she just trying to hit him? He shook his head and was grateful for a distraction when Sevira approached two people who had apparently been coming their way.

As expected of her, she immediately demanded they introduce themselves. He couldn't help but think that people were easily going to pick up that there was something suspicious about the group if she was on guard so easily and often. Upon hearing the answer to it, and after having moved up next to Sevira to greet their guests, Maliarc laughed.

"Perhaps that will lend credibility to my story as well." He shook his head. "It's not her you'll have a hard time of. It's the warmongering heart of gold over there." He nodded his head in Wilhelm's direction. "So what do we have? A gypsy....and a mage?" Although he knew nothing of their lifestyle or beliefs, Maliarc had read much about gypsy's, an could at least identify one.

"My name is Maliarc. I look forward to traveling with the both of you." Had had given up questioning any situations. How they knew what was happening at least had a concrete reason. Even Wilhelm would have a hard time beating down that door.

"Well, we've heard almost the same story from Maliarc this morning, so I think the time for shock has worn off. That doesn't explain what the boy is doing here though. I can tell from your demeanour he isn't your companion," Sevira said in a lighter tone.

She couldn't help but put up her guard when strangers came near. All her life she was trained as a soldier, and as Captain of the Guard you never took anyone lightly; everyone was treated with suspicion and caution. She also knew that word of the prophecy of Kamawanaiyo returning would spread. Still, it meant they needed all the help they could get. Gypsies, with their prophetic abilities and magical nature, could be of great use. And another mage, even one so young, might hold promising talent.

"Hey, Brightshield, bring Elesmira over here," she called out, using the alias that Princess Amira had told them in the first place before her identity was found out.

This Maliac guy, a mage! What luck! "My name is Alfen Ioann Bilge Torkel Ainsworth, a mage-in-training from Adyniel looking for a mentor to take me on as an apprentice during my travels. If I may ask to be taught by someone such as yourself, Maliarc, it would help me out and I'd be forever in your debt!" he happily said. The chance he may have found someone to teach him after months on the road from Erelandra was too much. He was practically radiating his happiness from his body. His aura would be blinding to any who could read them. He was nearly jumping up and down from excitement.

➳➳➳➳

Jaelle rolled her eyes at his statement and his childish behavior. Regardless, he was a mage and needed training. If he wanted to tag along, fine, but she wouldn't be teaching him anything. She was there only to help the faces she saw in her visions. The four standing in the training square. The red-haired elf girl, the large soldier, the female knight, and the old mage. Nothing else concerned her but fulfilling this quest so she could return home.

It didn't take long for the mage to address him. On some level, he had expected it. Young mages always looked to the elder ones to further their power. It was how Maliarc had hoped to live his life as well, so he couldn't blame the boy. He even admired the lad. Maliarc could scarcely remember a time when the thought of learning magic brought about such jubilation in him.

He still yearned to learn magic of course, but his cause was much less noble than his newfound friends'. It was clear the boy simple loved magic. He only wanted to learn everything he could, an admirable trait. However, a moral fight took place in the old mage, and it wasn't a fight he was winning. Maliarc spells were not something he wanted to pass down. They were learned from many nights of trial and error that oft resulted in harm befalling him. Should he teach another the hellish magicks he knew? Was it truly a wise idea? He felt as if he would be betraying magic users everywhere if he kept his magic to himself, but should a young man such as this "Alfie" truly know spells of destruction? Maliarc himself wished he didn't know them...but the past was the past.

"What is your specialty, young man?" Despite his moral dilemma, Maliarc struggled to keep a smile on his face as the fires of hell reflected from his eyes. Years of experience he shouldn't have welled up in his eyes, and he looked upon the youth favorably, almost to the point of tears. His choice had been his own, however, and he knew he had damned himself. Living with the consequences was what he would have to do.

"I'll certainly consider it."

He could not do this half-assed or he would end up ruining yet another life.

Alfie thought for a moment. "My skills now are mostly physic and elemental based," he admitted. He wasn't sure where to go from there. He hadn't been taught to learn a skill but to learn everything. Maybe that's what he was doing wrong all along? He wondered if it would matter, or if he would not teach him. He wanted a teacher. He needed a teacher. If he was going to get to be a full mage he needed all the skills he could master.
