A gnome with marvelously elaborate facial hair and a very fancy gown appears seemingly out of thin air and begins handing each creature already in attendance a small bag filled with an arbitrary number of glowing tokens.
"FOR SCIENCE!" is all he says when asked what they are for, but when a second gnome shows up and ushers the first random bunch of signed up students onto the stage—some from as far away as their dorm rooms—how the tokens are meant to be used becomes clear.
By SCIENCE, he meant BIDDING.
Quote: Due to a large number of volunteers, things are getting started a little earlier than anticipated! You are still more than welcome to sign up until midnight tonight (PST), but our first batch of students will be going up on the block a full day earlier than expected, so bid bid bid! Without further ado, here are some rules and instructions: 1) In your student's/horseman's next post, generate a random number between 500 and 1000 using Gaia's random number generator. This is the number of tokens that student has received from the gnome. If you are just now entering, don't worry. He has stationed himself at the door and is handing out bags to new arrivals. You may not erase posts and secretly roll again, but... 2) Students may ICly combine their funds and one or more students may then use those combined funds to bid. Two or more characters you own may not combine their funds with each other, but they can give/receive any amount of their money to/from characters played by others. (Don't have one character you own give money to another character you don't who then gives it to a second character you own either, please.) 3) If you're bidding on more than one student, please make sure the sum of your bids is not greater than your total number of tokens (aka do not bid more than you have). 4) You may bid on an auction even if you are being auctioned off. How you work out what happens with the character you win and the character who wins you is up to you and those characters/players, ICly and OOCly. It is advised that you discuss before you bid. 5) You may also bid on yourself, but why? 6) Remember, this is for fun. 7) Don't delete posts. You'll be disqualified from the auction and there will be tears. Take a look at the next post to see who is up for bid in Lot One! If you are not in Lot One, you have not been overlooked! The first thirteen participants were randomly chosen from the first 21 signups (for time reasons) and the rest will be up in Lot Two starting tomorrow!

As he positions the students on the stage, the second gnome introduces each one, his words heartfelt, sincere, and completely false.
