I think it's great that they took it up on Mtv so more people will find out about it but at the same time I think it's a little bit too soon. I think that they should have waited until it's at least a bit more established so it wouldn't be so easy to ban (or something) if there where a backlash.

We have (at least) five publishers creating new labels just to bring us our latest fix and BeBeautiful is starting to bring over anime and DMP(June) is bringing us novels. It's not like people are secretly putting out fanzines in their basement hoping that someone, somewhere out there will read them, like in the early years of slash. There is an established fanbase here with well to do companies catering to our whims. Honestly, how much more established can you get? Yaoi will always be a niche genre. It will never be completely accepted. Regardless of the public's acceptance, we are certainly well established.

At this point of time I think its a bad idea. I mean, I want more BL too and the more exposure it gets the more gets liscensed and brought over. But right now (In the US anyway) with all the homophobia and hate I don't think its a good idea. It'll just give the bigots in office an excuse to ban the stuff we love...and knowing them, they might even try to ban anime/manga all together seeing this "homosexual filth" as they would call it.

I agree with him. Not only that but it's doing everything big first which is not good. People in this dumb america needs to adjust. They should shows litttle here and there so people can get the fact that it is another part of art instead of automatically thinking it's hentai or for those who dont just cartoon porn as such. We are talking about people who are so in-the-box that hardly gay/lez/bi shows gets pickited or bad publicity. So bad that you thought it was the next 9/11 or something. It's true. Theses are the same people who get freaked out about a boy kissing another boy and it would be a peck, either in movies or walking down the street. Im not saying all people are like this but sadly there is a majority.

I agree with both of you very much. I've always been worried about yaoi becoming more publicly known. Yes, a bit here and there is okay... But I don't want people to start getting upset and calling it filth. With all of the edgy people on the issue of homosexuality, I don't want any bad publicity for it. I don't want ignorant people to think all anime is gay or porn, or that it's all violence and filth for children (even though most of it isn't for children). Plus if edgy parents start to hear about yaoi, then they may start to question any of their children who are into anime or monitor what they buy. I don't know what extremes people will go to, but I've heard some get pretty extreme.

That's absolutely true. The negativity that some may get from Yaoi could be generalized into all anime. That in and of itself is a bad thing, aside from the fact that just getting a negative vibe from Yaoi is bad enough. Plus, it might cause even more people to look down on homosexuality and all that, ("They're making Gay Cartoons now?!") which is even worse. I mean, I guess it's a good thing that more people are aware of it and it's not quite as esoteric as it used to be. But I think that it's mostly buissness. It's the forbidden fruit gimmik. I think that by making it so popular so suddenly it might make people hate it rather than those who could have been introduced to it slowly and could have actually liked it.

That being said, I am thoroughly amused that I went to Borders and near the manga section they had anime merchandise. One of which was a small bag/purse with "I heart YAOI" on it.

I hate to tell you this, but yaoi is already mainstream. The last anime convention I went to, they had sections devoted to just yaoi. And you don't even want to know how many people were there.

But whatever, I don't really care either way.

They also have a whole CONVENTION dedicated to yaoi in california >>;;

Anything that pushes it into the mainstream is good IMO. Not neccessarily yaoi but BL or slash in general, it's amazing how many people have never heard of it despite the huge amounts of it online. It's time like this I miss J:17 (British magazine that went bust about 2 years ago), they were totally starting to get behind slash type stuff - lot's of exposure of Phixx, pics of Karl and Todd from Corrie getting it on with the recognition that it was hot, etc. *mourns*

On the subject of the right getting up in arms about it, I read an article not so long ago on the BNP (British Nationalist Party) website. Some guy had written it in response to the popularity of Brokeback Mountain. Apparently paretns should be protecting their daughters from this gay craze coming from Japan that makes them believe homosexuality is *shock horror* natural. But I guess you'll never convince the extremists.

.. I'm concentrating more on the way they're pronouncing manga. Have I been pronouncing it wrong all these years, or is it bothering any one else? Dx I, and every one else I know in real life, pronounces it's like mango, but with an 'a,' of course.. the way they pronounce it makes me twitch. D:

...Duuude. Don't panic like that. Sure, there might be a lot of negativity aimed at us from mainstream America, but remember: this IS still America. I may not have much faith in our Senators and Representatives, but I don't think they can ban literature for containing gay themes. Look at all the controversy surrounding gay marriage!

I really doubt that they could win out with gay literature. The best they can hope for is an 18+ age limit on all of it, and even then it would be completely ridiculous. People buy, rent, and watch American-made gay porn, so why should introducing Japanese gay cartoons be such a big deal?
