Daniel awoke on his stomach, sprawled on the floor between the couch and the coffee table. The stacks of books from one end of the couch had become a jumbled mound on top of his outstretched arms, and his feet had become tangled in the blanket he had gone to sleep with. Pulling one of his hands from the mess of books, Daniel found that he had an iron grasp on the red lacquer rod. Pushing himself to his knees, and then clambering unsteadily to his feet Daniel stretched out muscles that felt exhausted. His fingers were sore from their grip on the rod, and he worked them as he set the rod down on the table. Sitting back down Daniel quickly glanced at a clock and saw that it was a little after three in the morning, still well before dawn. Daniel racked his brain, recalling every moment of the dreamed event in perfect clarity. Excepting the last few moments that is. Daniel had recognized the man’s face after a while. He had been the commanding officer over a handful of troops holding out against an enemy that he didn’t know of. At least they had been. The last he had seen the man or his people, he was being forcefully shoved through an emergency hatch, explosions and weapons fire all around, before coming to his senses in dame’s room at the institution. He needed to clear his head, to re-center himself. But most of all Daniel needed to contemplate his next move. Mahvatshi was now actively searching for him, and if what the man had said was to be believed, Daniel had narrowed the search on accident. A set of Mahvatshi’s words suddenly locked in his mind. He wanted to track me when I ‘ported’. When he left. That probably had something to do with his starting in one place and ending somewhere else almost instantly. Suddenly, a nagging feeling made Daniel look at his hand. An inhibitor. The message said it was an inhibitor. To keep me here. So I wouldn’t give myself away anymore than I had. Daniel got to his feet and began to get dressed. He pulled on the only pair of jeans he owned, along with a badly ruffled and creased white t-shirt. Remembering to ensure he blended in, Daniel grabbed one of the cold weather jackets that Dame had said he could borrow. Tucking the Batakos rod into the coat, Daniel quietly left the apartment. Walking out into the cold, way-too-early morning air, Daniel walked away from the complex in a random direction. His breath fogged as walked, hands tucked into his pockets. His lost memories were slowly beginning to resurface, and with greater frequency than even a week ago. It was some measure of his mood that Daniel thought that it would’ve been better if his memories had been completely destroyed. He’d rather not know what he was if it meant putting a stop to the madness that was coming for him. Running a hand through his shaggy locks, Daniel sighed to himself as his mind suddenly jumped tracks to his conversation with Dame right before bed. Even just remembering their talk made his chest tight. He thought all the way back to the first time he recalled feeling that way around her, the night in her room with the strange receiver contraption he had built. And the dancing. He hadn’t been in his right mind then, at least not all of it. The first vestiges of his personality had just begun to seep back out. Now that he thought about it that was also the first time he had gotten a flash of his old memory. He managed to pull more of it out, but it still seemed like someone else’s life. Except for the pain of loss. Which brought him back to his immediate, if not as urgent, problematic situation. He knew now what it was he felt around Dame, and why. But even if it could’ve been, would it have been worth it? The memory was full of sadness and grief. Surely there had been good times as well, but if the pain was all that was left, did he want more of it? Even if it were someone other than Dame, did he want to risk it? And worse, what if it placed the other person in danger? Daniel rolled his eyes at himself and sighed as he turned a corner on the street. This thinking in circles was getting him nowhere. And he knew that if he were in a less depressing state of mind, some logic might make its way into the equation at some point. Taking a deep breath of the freezing air, Daniel started to look around as the first glow of pink was beginning to creep up from the horizon. It was at that moment that realization struck him. He had no idea where he was.
"Well....poop."

The kitten had stopped whining when Velcore picked it up, but when he put it back on the pillow again, it resumed its whining. The other kitten was simply looking up at Velcore and then at Karrie with curiosity.
Suddenly, Thistle's head perked up and her tail started flicking quickly again. She quickly lept off of the couch and raced toward the front door, moving around Karrie and the pillow with the kittens on it.
Thistle just managed to make it to the front door as it opened. She flung herself at Amy, who laughed and swiftly caught her pink bundle, used to this kind of greeting from Thistle.
"Hey there, Thistle! I missed you, too, sweetie."
She started to carry Thistle into the living room and then stopped walking immediately as soon as she saw the tiny creatures on the pillow in the middle of the living room.
"Oh... my... gosh!!! They're so cute!!!"
Amy immediately walked over to the pillow, knelt down next to it, and gently put Thistle down next to her on the floor.
"Where did they come from, Karrie?!"
Her heart was melting.
