Then I revoke Mr. Moran from my list. (I have a maths teacher called Mr. Moran. Huh.)

I mean that the word "British" is really, you know, hazy.
The British Isles, which is a geographical, not a political entity are made up of Great Britain, Ireland et al. So anyone from either Great Britain (England, Scotland & Wales) or Ireland, or, e.g., the Isle of Man, could be referred to as 'British'. However, most would reject that and take it as a personal insult, especially those who're citizens solely of the ROI, which is a separate political entity from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (England, Scotland, Wales & NI). So, you could say 'British' is anyone from Great Britain alone. However, this excludes NI and off-mainlanders, breaking up the political entity of the United Kingdom.
The term 'UKian', or equiv, would clear all that up.
I recognise that many Irish are offended by the idea of Ireland being a part of the "British Isles" (geographical entity), and that the government discourages use of the term in this way.

I don't particularly see it as an issue, this element of interpretation has been part of the system for so long and I think it has actually helped unity in a way, in that people do have that element of freedom to declare themselves, to an extent, who they are. It's kept the system working fairly well I think.
However I do get where you're coming from, so if you want to have a solid description of where you stand, all you need to do is look at your passport (assuming you have one of course). E.g. I'm from Northern Ireland and it says in big black capitals under nationality BRITISH, so anytime people ask if I'm British or Irish, I say I'm British and get the official documents out.
As for the Irish; I like to think, that after having held a territorial claim to a part of the UK in their constitution for so long, we should be allowed to keep them on their toes. wink
