Billy returned no long after, and with others in tow. And so, three orderlies, two ladders, a nurse and a physician later, Daniel was free once more. As the troop of personnel that had gathered began to leave the tiny room, only Billy the Orderly remained, arms crossed and a frown on his face. He stared at Daniel as if he meant to never look away again. Daniel fidgeted beneath the glare. He finally pointed towards the ceiling, and the damaged hole that had been left by his extraction.
“I’m telling you Billy. That? Not my fault. You people should really look into the problem. It's a dangerous hazard.”
Daniel’s chipper mood wasn’t quite the same as yesterday, and it showed in his voice. Billy just stood still as a statue, never taking his eyes from Daniel. Daniel shrank under those eyes, and resigned himself to silence, and twiddling his fingers. After a few minutes, a tall man came into the room. Dark hair, but graying at the edges, topped a chiseled face with a squared jaw. A lab coat was worn casually open over a fine suit and tie. Daniel looked up and tried to reclaim some of his mental state.
“Morning Director. Imagine seeing you in these parts. If you stopped by for some morning tea, I’m afraid they won’t let me have any. Something about caffeine.”
The Director raised his hand and Daniel stopped talking. He noticed that the Director wasn’t smiling either. He wasn’t frowning like Billy, but the set of the jaw said that he was definitely not happy.
“Mr. Doe, I need you to answer a question.”
“Okay, but you can call me Daniel.”
“Oh, have you remembered your name.”
“Oh, that, no. Assuming I had one of course. No, I just kind of like Daniel. Dunno why. Daniel. It’s nice.”
“Very well, Daniel. I need you to tell me who helped you up into the vent.”
Daniel looked up at him, his face blank for the first time since arriving.
“No one helped me up there. Heck you people locked me in here.”
“Daniel, you didn’t get up there by yourself, now who helped you?”
“No one. There was no one here but me.”
“Then how did you get up there?”
Daniel opened his mouth but nothing came out. He tried again, and still nothing. He felt his mind whirring to a standstill, and his eyes fluttered as he tried to think. Finally it started to make his head ache.
“I…I don’t know. One minute I was sleeping, and the next I was dangling.”
The director pulled something from a pocket on his lab coat, and handed it to Billy. The orderly came forward with it, and began affixing it to Daniel’s right wrist.
“I will get to the bottom of this Mr. Doe. But until I do, and since you have shown a proclivity for being evasive and stealthy, you will wear this tracking bracelet until such time as you are dismissed from these facilities. But look on the bright side. I haven’t quarantined you. Mr. Sheldon, see to it that Mr. Doe is given some time to stretch his feet outside.”
Billy lifted Daniel by his underarm, more gently than Daniel was expecting.
“C’mon Daniel. Let’s go. No funny business either.”
As Daniel was led from the room, poking at the bracelet on his wrist, the Director called one last time.
“See you this afternoon, Mr. Doe.”
Billy guided the now solemn Daniel to a set of double glass doors. Outside it was warm and muggy, but there was sun. He turned loose of his arm once they were down the steps and out on the grass.
“Try and behave from now on, could you Daniel. Just a little bit? Makes things go easier, trust me. I’m gonna be over here, but don’t try anything, please? I don’t feel like running in this heat.”
Daniel shrugged away from him and glumly made his way over to a large tree, standing beneath its shade. He picked up four or five little pebbles and began juggling as he stared off into space, not even minding the intricate patterns he happened to be weaving through the air with the little stones.

Daniel turned and seemed suddenly startled at what he saw. For a moment the pebbles and their flights wavered, and then his hands seemed unable to keep up. The rocks went all over, and Daniel’s eyes seemed to search inwards for a moment before he gave his head a shake and turned back to Dame. His smile flickered back to his face, though the keeping of it there was an obvious effort. He strode over to where she sat.
“Bah, that’s of no real interest. Now what I think is of interest, is what exactly we’re going to do today. If we’re to be friends, we really should do friend things. We could take a stroll in the garden, maybe try and spy a small furry creature.”
Daniel absently fiddled with the bracelet on his wrist as he spoke.
“Or maybe we could have a proper adventure. Head out into the great unknown, and seek out whatever fortune may await us. Or, you know, something. Oh I know. We could try and find some pudding. Yeah, pudding! Better than what have here. Now that would be a worthy adventure.”
The cheerfulness returns as Daniel speaks, as does his smile. Upon the idea of pudding he becomes genuinely excited.

Daniel falshes a mockingly incredulous face, ruined entirely by the silly smirk he cannot surpress.
"Oh I don't know about that. Pudding can be an anytime food. Heavens, any food is an anytime food. I mean just who got to decide what sorts of food I should be eating, and when I should be eating it? No one I know, that's for sure. So I hearby declare pudding an anytime food."
His banter slows, and the smirk trembles at the edges for a moment, but it holds. He stands next to Dame and draws a deep breath.
"But I don't know about getting it here though. I've been only a day, and already this place is becoming depressing. I mean I'm only one person. I can only channel so much carefree cheer. But this place is like a sponge, just soaking it right up, with hardly a sign to mark I ever tried."
Daniel's eyes go distant for the briefest of moments, but he snaps back just as quickly.
"See there I go, losingall the happy. Besides, I'm sure there's better times to be had out there. Where someone else doesn't get decide what you have for meals, or lock you in a room at night. Or watch you like a hawk."
Daniel gives a look over his shoulder, and waves to Billy with a smile.
