"Hey, your husband is here to see you."

"My husband?" She turned to look at her co-worker in confusion.

"That's what he said."

She laid the stack of papers in her hand down on the counter and walked out of the office into the lobby. Looking through the glass windows of the front doors, she saw the tall, slim rugged man standing outside.

"Hey," she said, as she stepped outside.

"Hi," he replied, looking up and smiling seeing her appear before him.

"What are you doing here?"

"I was in the area and figured I would come see you."

"And tell others that you're my husband?"

"Wait? Did someone say that I said that?"

"You didn't?"

"I just said I was here to see you and mentioned I was someone dear to you."

She laughed. "Well, I shouldn't be too surprised. The folks here like to spice things up for the sake of gossip."

"You look good."

"Thanks." She then turned to glance over her shoulder through the windows into the office she had been working in. Although her co-workers weren't watching at the moment, she knew they were probably looking out of the corner of their eyes, curious on who the guy she was talking to. To be expected for a single woman like herself. She turned to look back at him. "Um... I should get back to work."

"Oh. Right..."

"I get off at 5, if you wanted to meet up then."

He smiled at her and nodded in agreement. "At five then."

"Cheers?" she said, holding her glass out towards him.

His eyes twinkled as he held out his glass of whiskey to clink against hers. "Cheers."

"I really am lucky to have crossed paths with you."

"You? Lucky?" he said, after taking a sip of his drink, feeling the alcohol burn as he slid down. "I think I should be the one saying that."

She laughed before taking a sip of her own drink.

"I'm serious," he continued. "It's not often I find a kind, loving woman who is as much of a badass as I am. You know how to share your heart with others but also know when not to take any crap from anyone."

"I wasn't always that way."

"And I'm sure I would feel bad to know you had to go through some of the things you went through to become the woman you are now."

"At least I know gentlemen like you still exist. I was starting to think it was nothing but a dream."

An hour and a half until I can clock off... *sighs*

Hurry up time. Let's get going.

"John?" she asked, hearing the ragged intake of breath as he tried to maintain control of her tears. "What's going on?"

"I love you so much, you know that?" he said after finding some composure.

"John, what's going on? Why does that sound more like a goodbye?" she asked, the panic and concern peaking in her voice causing more tears to roll down his face.

"I messed up, angel. I thought I had everything under control."

"Where are you? I can come help."

"There's nothing you can do. It's too late."

"Don't you tell-"

"Angel, don't! This has gotten out of hand beyond even your abilities. There's nothing you can do."

"John..."

"I'm sorry."
