Alex chuckled and walked down the aisle towards the deli. "Well we need burgers and hot dogs for the grill. Drinks for people to well... drink. And an appetizer. And maybe some picnic stuff." He shrugged.

Eva grabbed some of the meat as they walked by and then they headed to the drink aisle. Both of them grabbed what they wanted. "So we have the meat, the drinks, the bbg sauce, some appetizer food......is there anything we've missed?"

Alex blinked. "Do you think you're dad's gonna have charcoal for the grill?"

Eva laughed. "Oh yeah. Not only will he bring his own coal but he'll bring the only type of coal that is sold in their hometown. It's his favorite."

Alex laughed a little too. "Ok then that should do it." He smiled and headed towards the check out lanes. A gun went off and glass could be heard shattering. "Eva get down!" He yelled dropping to the floor as he pulled her down too.

Eva covered her head as Alex forced her to the ground. Other people screamed and others were yelling. A little boy started crying and he started walking around and screaming for his mommy. Eve crawled to him and grabbed him. "Shh," She sat as she held him. "It's ok. We'll find mommy but you need to be quiet ok?" She asked. The little boy sniffed and nodded. They both sat down and Eva clung to him as if he was her own child. Gently, she rubbed his head. "Everything is going to fine. It's ok." She whispered in his ear.

Alex watched her and smiled slightly. 'She seems like she would be a great mother... why the hell am I even thinking about this?' He yelled at himself then started to crawl forward. "I'll be back in a second." He said to Eva. He crawled forward and peaked around the corner put pulled it back quickly as he was shot at.

The boy hugged Eva tighter as he heard another gun shot. She gasped when Alex was almost shot at.
Please, don't get shot. She thought desperately.
"It's ok." She whispered again in the boy's ear.

"Come out, come out, wherever you are." One of the men said in a taunting way as his footsteps could be heard getting louder.
Alex started to panic and grabbed a ketchup bottle above him. He ripped a small hole in his shirt and wiped a little ketchup on the spot. "I hope this works." He said quietly and looked over to Eva with eyes soft. He closed his eyes just as the guy turned the corner. He looked at Eva and the boy then at Alex and chuckled. "Serves him right." He snickered and went back to the registers.

Eva hugged the boy tighter and glared at the guy as he kept walking. She wanted to give Alex a thumbs up but decided against it. The boy in her arms began to cry again. "Shut that kid up!" One of the guys said. Eva hushed him and glared at the guy.

Alex held his breath, trying desperatly not to move. He moved slowly and took out his cell phone. He dialled 9-1-1 but just left the phone on and covered it up so it couldn't be heard ringing. He cracked an eye and looked at Eva.

Eva looked at him with worry in her eyes. The boy began to cry again. One of the other guys walked up to him and put a gun in her face. The guys handle began to giggle with nerves. "Shut him up!" He said.
"He's just a kid." Eva said with a calm voice.
"Yeah and he's yours now shut him up!" The guy shouted. Eva stroked the boys head to calm him down.
"He's not mine." The boy clung to her even tighter.
"Shut. Him. Up! Or I will." The guy said.
"Over my dead body." Eva glared.
"That can be arranged." The guy said.
"Frankie, calm down and get over here." The other guy said. Frankie looked at Eva and then back at him friend. Frankie ran back to his friend. Eva hoped that the police would hurry up.

Alex let out a sigh of relief and looked at Eva as the men walked off. "You ok?" He mouthed to her.
The sound of sirens could be heard in the distance.

Eva sighed when she heard the sirens. She nodded and smiled at Alex. "Hear that?" She whispered to the boy. "You'll see your mom real soon."

Alex smiled back at her and went back to playing dead.
"We have the place surrounded. Come out with your hands up." The cops yelled into the store.
"Crap! Frankie what do we do now?!" The man said.
"We get the hell out of here, that's what." Frankie said and looked at Eva. "You, get over here."
