As for controlling & harm with song magic, that should be a Last Resort when something is unavoidable, not something to do without a second thought. There's 2 kinds of Song Magic, like singing and talking normally, there's Indoor and Outdoor Voices. Tauriel said to Hugo, as she explains a good way to use Song Magic and to avoid a recipe for disaster.
Then Tauriel got out a small bag and emptied it out to show some colored stones enchanted with magic. These are called Spellstones which are used to release, store and amplify magic. Care to hand me an empty mug for a moment so I can demonstrate?

Watch... Come Forth, Water... The blue spellstone glows as Tauriel holds it over the cup and a stead stream of water pours into the cup. This is called Active Magic as I cast a spell and it created a steady stream of water. The stone stops glowing after the cup was full of water.
