Arithrel Wow, it sounds brilliant! I can't wait to see it. I'll have to get a full-frontal picture of me in my prom dress-my mom made it, not me, but it's amazing too. It's an italian ren gown in dark purple raw silk with a bronzey gold of the same fabric trimming the skirt and on the tie-on sleeves. I really, really need to learn to sew. lol. It's not as hard as you think. Really. If I can do it, anyone can. smile Get some cheap fabric and just start experimenting. Make some rough stuff to wear to a camping event where you don't want to risk ruining your nicer stuff. Start with simple stuff... t-tunics and chemises, drawstring skirts, and the like, and go from there. Trust me, I was *terrified* when I started on the bedspread dress, because it was only a twin bespread so I only had so much fabric to work with, and i'd never worked from a pattern before and i had NO IDEA what in the hell I was doing. But my friend Tracy was there with me and kinda held my hand and walked me through it. The new dress, I whipped out, trim and all, in three days, now that I know what I'm doing. One thing I will say about working from patterns, though: Freezer paper is your best friend. Buy a big roll of it, and use it to trace your pattern pieces, so you can leave the pattern itself intact in case you want to use it again, or need to change sizes, or whatever. The freezer paper is nice and sturdy and works great.

I won this absolutely brilliant piece of wool (11 yards) in raffle at an event and I was determined to make something myself instead of getting my mom to do it. lol. I plan on making a cloak out of the rest, though I haven't gotten around to it yet because I still need to get something to line it with. My mom had to literally walk me through it though-"cut there. NO NOT THERE! THERE!" lol. My mom's scary-she makes her own patterns entirely. Is freezer paper the brown stuff? Because she uses it too. 3nodding

The stuff I use is white paper that's lined with plastic on one side (though that's just incidental, not really necessary...), and comes in a big roll. I like the white stuff because you can put it on top of the pattern and, if you have reasonably good light, you can see through it to trace the pattern without having to cut the tissue or anything.

Oh, cool. I'll have to look into it. But first, I have to convince my lord that some nice norse garb would really look good on him. I am not making cavalier/renaissance garb right away. lol.

Very nice garb, green. Simple, but good. It looks like it'd probably be comfy, which is the most imprtant thing.

Bleh. Corsets might look good on ladies, but I think the ability to breathe is a bit more important than the extra style points earned. Can't have much fun while you're struggling for consciousness, after all... xp

corsets aren't that bad... good posture, great clevage... and for some reason i always feel more powerful when i wear one.... don't quite understand that myself, but i'm just gonna go with it.

Well, the posture and cleavage are great assets, don't get me wrong! I'm not objecting to either of those! I suppose it depends on the fit, and how tightly they're cinched up. Never done a female persona, so I haven't got any practical experience. And before anyone asks, no. Just...no. xp
Though I think the power-trip feeling may come from the association of corsets and dominatrix-type women. Sort of an extension of the old saying 'Clothes make the man'??
