A lot of the bands that are commonly mislabeled as goth-rock are done so due to image, I believe.

Most people are surface based, if a band looks "goth" then that's what people think they are.

That is the case, usually. It seems anyone with pale skin and dark clothes gets labelled a "goth musician".
