Neither Marilyn Manson nor Black Sabbath are goth musically, in any way or form.

Well goth has come to include a lot of bands so it depends what genre exactly you are looking for. As the fashion and subculture now includes many forms of Industrialism, antiquity, ambience, the music can be generally categorized into that as well.

A few bands I tend to see as goth are:
London After Midnight
Bauhaus
Cure
Souxie and the Banshees
Joy Division
Birthday Massacre
Thoushaltnot
The Last Dance
Cruxshadows

But than, all of those can be divided into other types of "goth" as well

Generally, the 69 Eyes would be called hard-rock, though, they do have some goth-rock and death-rock (not to be confused with death-metal) influences.

London After Midnight is a goth band. And Cradle Of Filth is sopposed to be extreme gothic metal or something like that.

There's a large amount of controversy surrounding HIM's genre.

HIM started out as a cover band of artists such as Type O Negative, KISS, Danzig, Black Sabbath and Depeche Mode; of those bands, none of them are goth-rock, save Depeche Mode who arguably had a few goth-rock albums.

They themselves have disputed being goth-rock, and claim to be "love metal". Generally speaking, while they have some similarities to goth rock, most of what they've released is far too abbrasive to be goth-rock, but instead, would be considered metal or hard-rock of some kind.

I personally like that they've given themselves their own genre.

And it fits.

Another band that's done that is Deadsy.

They didn't really fit into any genre so they call themselves "undercore".

One thing I would like to bring up is, would the cure be classed as a goth band?

because althought Robert smith (God in my eyes) has from my knowledge been known to be a huge influence on the goth rock look, would you really consider the head on the door, greatest hits, kiss me kiss me kiss me and various other records gothic?

sure enough Pornography and seventeen seconds are my favorite cure albums and i personally would consider them goth, would that make the band itsself goth?

Darn Robert and his ability to stay within one genre, but also thank him for creating a beautiful and wide arrange of music! sweatdrop

I too like when bands name their own music.

"Gay pirate, gypsy rock"

"Industrial Jungle p***y Punk"

The Cure's "gothiness" has been long disputed. Many people consider them fundemental to the genre's aestheticism and poetic lyricism, others say that it was merely coincidental.

It's commonly agreed upon that Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers are all goth-rock albums, but it's never been singularly decided whether or not they are "a goth band". Lead singer Robert Smith and goth writer Mick Mercer would argue no, while goth writer/singer Voltaire and Siouxsie-bassisst Steve Severin would argue yes.
