If he is in combat directly related to an ANBU mission, he wears the standard ANBU attire, complete with a kitsune-themed mask. Outside of combat, he wears his standard outfit, with the exception of a few pouches that he hides in the folds of his kimono.

Nindo:"Moving forward is the only viable option." Personality: After waking from his coma, Shinji's personality appears to be drastically different than before. He still retains his quiet and withdrawn nature at times, but for the most part he is much more social and outgoing than he used to be. Occasionally bits of his old gloomy self can be caught when he is on his own, but the majority of his paranoia and trust issues have been washed away. In that same vein, Shinji no longer views himself as weaker than his peers. Instead, he forcefully places himself on the same pedestal as them, if only for the sake of his own confidence. If he's asked, he downplays how strong he believes himself to be with false humility. His drive for power is still very much in place, but it isn't fueled by the same emotions as before. Instead of inferiority giving him a thirst for strength, he strives to be strong for the sake of Arashigakure and the Land of Floods. Joining the ANBU corps taught him, among other things, how important a sense of duty is for determining ones worth. As a means to fulfill the tenets of his job, he's begun to make it a point to keep a finger on the pulse of Arashigakure, trying to learn as much information as he can about as many people and events as he can. His newer outlook on life has given him a vested interest in the growth of new shinobi, wanting the absolute best outcomes for them to ensure they can be a valuable asset to the whole of Arashigakure, while the state of the world has expanded the scope of his sense of duty to include the rest of the villages as well. Shinji is a firm believer that the corruption plaguing the entire shinobi system is a cancer that needs removed, and fully intends to do his part in solving that problem.
Whenever Shinji is engaged in combat not relating to ANBU activities, one of two things will happen. Either he will hold back, in cases where his opponent is noticeably weaker than he is, pulling his punches just enough to keep them from being discouraged but not enough for them not to be challenged. He does this mostly as a means to train new students and younger shinobi. The other route he will take is reserved for enemies of the village or challengers of equal or greater skill than he possesses, in which he adopts the savage mentality of "take no prisoners," assaulting them with the full of his ability as soon as the fight begins. Should he be undergoing an operation while in the ANBU uniform, he thinks more methodically, planning everything he does before making a move, doing his best to minimize any risks to his identity or the village in the process.

The user is able to cast ninjutsu from their weapon without the use of hand signs by making any flourish or deliberate movement to cast the technique in the direction the weapon is commanded. This requires the same amount of time as the forming of hand signs to cast ninjutsu. They are also able to Korabo 1 ninjutsu and 1 bukijutsu together with varying cool downs for a single action. Master of Many: The user sets out to learn all of their class's style available to them in their studies. The user gains access to an additional style every rank for a total of six. Third Class: Bukijutsu ▱▰▱ Juggernaut → The user suffers no restrictions of movement or drawbacks from any armor tier they wear. In addition, armor they are actively wearing are increased by two ranks in durability and techniques that are increased in effectiveness against armor do not gain that bonus against the user. The user gains a [+1] stats boost to strength and endurance. Once every three posts, the user is able to defend an attack without paying an action for the technique, instead spending it upon an offensive action if the user chooses.

In fact, you wouldn't see anything more than a thin white veil around his body. If he were to walk while one was viewing his chakra materialization, they would notice slight ripples beneath his feet as if he were stepping on water. However, this manifestation evolves as he enters and progresses the virtues of Reiken. From the first stage through the sixth stage, a blossoming lotus appears at his feet, opening wider with each stage. The petals of the lotus look to be made of an amalgamation of armor and weapons. Upon entering the seventh and final virtue, an ancient set of samurai armor appears behind him, sitting in the traditional pose of the Buddah, with the warriors weapons resting upon its lap.

This blast costs no combat action or resource and can only happen once per post. ▱▰▱ An Extension of Oneself | Having spent so much time learning how to use various different weapons and styles, Shinji has become increasingly comfortable with nearly any type of bukijutsu, allowing him to execute bukijutsu techniques from abnormal angles and seemingly without needing to adhere to any rigid motions or forms (this does not affect any technique that specifically requires a stance technique, such as Spirit's Rising from the Phantom Slayer bukijutsu style). ▱▰▱ Always on the Brink | Shinji has trained to constantly keep himself teetering just on the edge of triggering the first Reiken virtue state, allowing him to flash his eyes a cyan color momentarily, at will, without actually needing to activate the first virtue. This does nothing more than change his eye color for up to a few seconds at a time, and holds no value in a combative setting. ▱▰▱ Conductive Destruction | Ranton users are masters of their elements so one Raiton and one Suiton ninjutsu can be self-Koraboed for only one offensive activation. Gyuki PA's ▱▰▱ Colossus Impact | Each instance of physical contact with the host or demon's physical attacks causes it's own shock wave or concussive blast if a technique already would cause such instead of the technique applying a single shock wave, doubling the size of the shock wave. Those in it's range have trauma applied at two tiers lower than the original attacks with a minimum of tier one trauma. Finally, each shock wave crushes earth beneath it, creating dangerous terrain that reduces agility and speed by two points within that area. If shock waves are generated simultaneously upon a single target from opposing angles, the trauma that target suffers is increased by one tier. ▱▰▱ Ink of the Behemoth | Using his Octopus lineage, Gyuki is able to convert it's water release techniques to ink, applying tiered disease at no cost. The technique he created is the true manifestation of his Spirit Weapon, though he can still form a single blade as a partial application of his Spirit Weapon. The Battlefield of the Soul technique is similar in function to the normal Bloody Fields of War technique of the Infinite One Sword style, in that he has great accuracy in the placement of the blades that rain down from the sky, and the caution tape that circles around its confines. However, these blades are extensions of the Reiken no Michi style, and as such each blade is ethereal in nature, and do not require a sword case to perform this variant. After the swords have been set, Shinji is able to rematerialize a single sword per post in a different spot for no additional action or cost. He can do so at any angle or height up to 20 meters above ground, so long as the new location is within the bounds of this technique. Instead of manifesting 100 ethereal blades, he instead forms seven floating spirit blades that hover around his body, or six if a spirit blade is already in use. Forming these blades does not require an activation. When resting, the manifested swords float at his back in a circular formation. They seem to respond to mental commands, and can be used to execute bukijutsu techniques without physically touching the blade, but the technique's effectiveness is reduced by 1 full rank. While this technique is active, Shinji cannot use his full keystone technique, but he can apply the Armiger Augment to this technique when paying its resource costs. [Lasts for 8 posts]
▰ Armiger [ Tamashī no buki-ko (Lit. Armory of the Soul) ] | Rank E | Bukijutsu Keystone Augment | Spiritual At the time of casting Tayoreru Sekai, Shinji can pay an additional E rank amount of chakra in order to have the phantom blades created through his keystone technique instead materialize as a variety of weapons instead of copies of the exact same type of blade. In doing so, he'll have access to spiritual katana's like normal, but also have great swords, daggers, polearms, and even whips mixed into the plethora of blades. This augment follows the same rules stipulated in the initial keystone, and acts as if it were the same technique, with a small additional cost.

▰ Kami no Ryōiki [神の領域 God's Realm] | Rank S+ | Bukijutsu | Spiritual A powerful, yet simple, technique. God's Realm is a technique that functions similarly to the Flying Thunder God technique, but is restricted only to Spirit Weapons. Shinji can use this technique to instantly warp to a new location on the battlefield so long as the location he is travelling to is within [2] feet of his Reiken weapon. This technique has a [5] post cooldown while in combat.
▰ Transcendence of Earthly Binds [ 地球の鎖を超越する Chikyū no kusari o chōetsu suru ] | Rank A | Bukijutsu [Reiken] | Cost [ Spiritual ] A specialized Reiken technique Shinji developed using his limited knowledge of space-time ninjutsu, the Chikyū technique (shortened version for simplicity) allows him to switch places in space with his reiken weapon, or anything or anyone connected to his Reiken energy. While this technique doesn't have a limiting usage range, it does take 1 Shunshin per use.
▰ Alignment of Seven Worlds [ 七つの世界の整列 Nanatsunosekai no seiretsu ] | Rank C | Bukijutsu [Reiken] | Cost [ Spiritual ] After paying the cost of this technique, and not taking any offensive or defensive actions, Shinji is able to form a link with any number of willing individuals, initiated through some form of physical contact. This link, rather than being formed through a seal or with Chakra, is formed through Reiken Energy, giving those affected a direct connection to Shinji's spirit. Once the connection is formed, Shinji is able to passively "feel" where they are located so long as they remain in the same topic as him. This connection is severed the moment the linked individuals move into a separate topic as Shinji and have at least 1 additional post made in that area.
▰ Path of the Blade [ Ha no Michi ] | Rank D | Reiken/Bukijutsu | Spiritual Requires an active Virtue State Whenever Shinji has an active Clone, and is at least in the First Virtue State, he can pay a D Rank amount of chakra on physical contact with a clone in order to turn that clone into a copy of his Reiken weapon. This copy is treated as a clone, and can only be used for a single activation before it disappears. This cost can be paid in reverse, turning Reiken weapons into clones of Shinji as well. If a clone is generated this way, they are treated as D rank with no chakra reserves, and can only perform simple bukijutsu techniques. They recieve a stamina pool of 500 and a single activation per post. Clones made using this technique last for 3 posts, or until they are struck from an unguarded attack of D Rank or higher. This technique can be used multiple times per post for a single activation.
▰ Seventh Modified Virtue: Rectitude, War God's Mantle [ Ikusagami no Manto ] | Rank S+ | Reiken/Bukijutsu | Complex Whenever he would enter the Seventh Reiken Virtue State, Shinji can instead enter a similar state by mixing Gyuki's chakra with his Reiken energy and focus singularly on what he believes to be the correct course of action at the given moment. In doing so, the usually blue ethereal armor that forms over his body is instead replaced with lavender **pieces** of armor rather than the full set. These armor pieces consist of the outer half of kote (armored sleeves), hai-date (cuisses, or hip armor), and an ethereal crown that forms over his head like a halo that displays Gyuki's horns attached to the sides. Additionally, an armor plate forms near Shinji's tailbone that sprouts tails similar to the First Stage demon mastery form. The complex cost for this technique is paid using Shinji's stamina and Gyuki's chakra, and must be paid each post for the duration as upkeep. This state can only be maintained for 5 posts maximally, including the post it is activated in. Rather than providing the standard stat increases the normal Seventh Virtue state grants, this state instead acts simultaneously as the seventh Reiken virtue state and as the highest form of Demon Mastery transformation that Shinji knows, granting the benefits of both. However, after this technique ends, Shinji suffers from 1 tier of physical trauma [Max 4] per post it is maintained after the initial activation post, due to the immense stress this puts his body through, as well as reduces his strength and speed stats to [-4].

▰ Hanki [反鬼 Reverse Demon] | Rank X | Speed Release | Spiritual A defensive technique designed and performed by Shinji, Hanki is only effective against physical strikes such as bukijutsu or taijutsu, but can also be used against solid chakra constructs. By enveloping a part of his body with Sonic chakra of the same rank as an oncoming technique, then touching said technique with the gathered sonic chakra, he can instantly nullify the incoming technique by hitting it with intense vibrations that, in effect, push in the opposite direction as the technique strongly enough to cancel out its momentum. The Sonic chakra for this technique can be gathered anywhere, but must always be paid at the same rank of the technique being cancelled. [4 post cooldown]
▰ Myakuhaku [脈拍 Pulse] | Rank B | Speed Release | Spiritual A technique that can only be used outside of combat, Myakuhaku envelops Shinji's body with chakra that vibrates at hypersonic levels before erupting outwards and expanding to the edges of the Topic. This acts as a form of echolocation, mimicking the bats that the Ketsueki family are contracted to. He can use this to pick up on the locations of objects and people within an entire topic, that aren't being concealed with a B-Rank or higher method for hiding their presence. This wave of hypersonic chakra is very gentle, almost undetectable physically, but can be seen as a slight shimmer in the air as it travels. Should one be absolutely in-tune with the sensations of their body, such as a sage, they might feel it pass over them like one would feel a strand of hair brushing against their skin. The chakra vibrates at a frequency that allows it to pass through solid objects, but also deals no damage due to this same trait.
▰ Attōtekina Dageki [圧倒的な打撃 A Crushing Blow] | Rank S | Bukijutsu | Spiritual An augmented version of the Riot Carousel technique. After the blades are orbiting his body through Disorderly Line, instead of sending them outward as a circular rotating force, Shinji can instead direct them towards an opponent, causing them to all fly forth at once with the intent of overwhelming the foe. This technique is treated as multiple separate S-Rank techniques for a single cost and activation, and triggers the multiple action system.
▰ Phantom Presence [ Yurei Kehai ] | Rank B | Speed Release | Cost [ Spritual ] By infusing his body with Speed Release chakra, then rapidly circulating it throughout his entire form, Shinji creates a sort of vibrating aura around him. While outwardly, in direct view, there doesn't seem to be any visual change to him whatsoever, this technique causes him to vanish when viewed peripherally. Once he re-enters a direct field of view, he can be visually perceived again. This technique has no effect on his physical form or the overall awareness of his presence, merely on the visual perception of his body. This technique requires an initial cost of B rank chakra, but can be upheld for additional posts for a D rank amount of chakra per post.
▰ Speed Release: Bursting Slash [ Jinton: Hajikeru ] | Rank X | Speed Release, Bukijutsu Augment | Cost [ Varies ] By enveloping a blade, or blades, with Speed release chakra before executing a technique, Shinji can perform techniques from a distance at speeds that break the sound barrier, resulting in a highly condensed pressure wave. This pressure is projected outward in the direction of the executed technique, up to 20 meters in a single direction, at the rank of the augmented technique in a crescent shape. This can be performed with any simple or complex bukijutsu technique. Simple techniques become complex, and complex become spiritual. Any chakra cost required to execute this augmenting technique must be paid from the Speed chakra pool, and cannot be paid with the users normal chakra pool.
▰ Wind Walking [ Kaze no sanpo ] | Rank D | Fuuton | Cost [ Spiritual ] Similarly to how shinobi have mastered the art of walking along vertical surfaces and water, Shinji has cultivated a technique that temporarily allows him to treat empty air as a solid, traversable surface. However, this cannot be maintained longer than 5 posts at once due to the unpredictable and thin nature of the very air he would be standing on. He can, however, during that 5 post limit, also step up and down as if he were on a set of stairs. D rank Cost must be paid per post to maintain.
▰ Laser Wire [ レーザーの弦 Rēzā no Gen ] | Rank D | Ninjutsu [ Ranton ]| Cost [ Spiritual ] By utilizing extreme precision, Shinji gathers moisture from the air and condenses it into a sharp, thin length of wire before imbuing it with Ranton chakra. The resulting combination is a.... well... A laser wire, in the most literal sense. This wire can be used as a substitute for standard wires when using the Lattice Embrace bukijutsu style, with the strength of the wires being equivalent to their metallic counterpart. Paying an additional E rank chakra in posts following this technique's use, without requiring an action to do so, adds more length to the wire. Shinji experiences no complications from holding or manipulating this wire, but contact to it by other individuals results in simultaneously being drenched and burned at the point of contact. The tier applied is equivalent to the rank of technique used in regards to the collision. For example, an A rank technique used with this specialized chakra wire causes tier 2 of both statuses.
▰ Tailed Beast Ball: Scattershot [ 尾獣玉: 散弾銃 Bijūdama: Sandan jū] | Rank S+ | Ninjutsu [ Demon ] | Cost [ Spiritual ] The user gathers chakra to form a typical Tailed Beast Ball, but forms it in an intentionally unstable mixture. When launched, this ball travels in a straight line for [3] meters before exploding, scattering numerous smaller orbs of chakra outward in a half-circle facing the direction it was traveling. These smaller spheres, 20 in total, are all B rank, requiring an B rank amount of resources to defend against. On contact with a surface, these orbs erupt in a 20 foot diameter concussive explosion, causing tier 2 trauma and carrying an additional 10 foot knock-back effect. Like its original version, these explosions negate armors and treat techniques it encounters as two ranks lower in power. These individual orbs cannot be directed, and instead fly forward until they connect with a surface, or travel an uncontested 100 meters. Usable once per combat.
▰ Sage Art: Over the Speed of Sound [ Senpō: Ijō Onsoku ] | Rank S+ | Sage/Bloodline | Spiritual When in his Sage Transformation, Shinji performs this technique by coating his body in Nature enhanced Sonic chakra. Doing so allows him to temporarily move at speeds imperceptible to even the most advanced stages of doujutsu. He can instantly move to any location within a topic in the blink of an eye, releasing a shockwave at his previous location with enough force to shatter the ground. This technique lasts long enough to make three of these movements over the course of combat. This technique can only be used once per combat. The increased movement speed of this technique cannot be used for evasive purposes.
▰ Pass Through [ Tsūka Suru ] | Rank C | Bloodline | Spiritual Once per combat, Shinji can imbue his entire body with sonic chakra, causing him to vibrate at a rate that allows him to pass completely through solid objects, and vice-versa, without sustaining any damage or ill effects. Outside of combat, this technique has no limit on usage.
▰ Ethereal [ Kūki no Yōna ] | Rank C | Bukijutsu | Spiritual This technique does not require an activation. Whenever Shinji performs a bukijutsu technique with his Reiken weapon, he can apply this technique to augment it. In doing so, his Reiken weapon will temporarily vanish, rematerializing right before his technique would make contact. The augmented technique becomes 1 Rank harder to defend against.
▰ Cataclysmic Slash [ Tenpenchii no ha ] | Rank A - S+ | Ranton | Complex By infusing Ranton chakra into a sword and performing a horizontal slash of the blade, a razor sharp line of chakra is released, traveling in a straight line for 50, 100, or 200 feet based on rank. As this chakra blade travels, moisture is pulled from underneath it and ambient static charge is pulled from above it, both being pulled towards the line of chakra. This collection of elements is manifested in such a way that it resembles an enlarged head of a wild beast, often canine in shape. Just before it connects with a solid surface, the “beast” is fully absorbed into the line of chakra, which then explodes on contact, creating a 50 foot concussive blast of Ranton chakra, burning and electrocuting anything within its radius.
▰▰▰ Yamato Yamato is a large wolf dog, whose head is level with Shinji's in terms of height. An older member of Inuseki park, with rumors surrounding his name. Some say he used to fiercely guard the entrace to their lands, while others paint him to be a former "dog of war," so to speak. He tends to remark on the "Old Days" and complain of being up in years. Though, not even the other dogs of Inuseki Park know exactly how old he is. Yamato doesn't get along with most people. He's under the belief that the human race is largely made up of destructive, corrupt, gluttonous individuals who don't know how to solve problems rationally. He's seen the wars they've waged in the name of change, but hasn't seen any real changes being made; leaving him with a growing disdain for the species as a whole. His bond with Shinji is in stark contrast with this contempt. The contract they forged was started on the basis of sharing similar views on what the Shinobi world has become, and the direction it seemed to be going.
Yamato's fur is grey and white, with swirling patterns forming what appears to be tribal-esque variations on the sun and moon on either side of his neck.
Ability:Tranquil Mirror Whenever Shinji manifests a Reiken weapon or uses a Reiken technique, a copy of the weapon or technique is formed for the wolfdog. Yamato can use any bukijutsu that Shinji knows, of S Rank and below, so long as he has the appropriate weapon.
▰ Lunar Fang [ Japanese name ] | Rank: S | Cost: Complex Yamato's signature attack, the Lunar Fang appears to be a simple horizontal slash with a blade, at first. However, upon the completion of its motion, a crescent shaped blade of chakra is sent out for 20 meters, resulting in a secondary attack stemming from the path of the blades edge. The initial motion can also be used as an attack, creating a two-staged offensive technique.
▰ Sun Splitter [ Japanese name ] | Rank: S+ | Cost: Spiritual Yamato gathers an immense amount of chakra in his jaws, channeling it into the blade his teeth are clenched on. The chakra, although it doesn't have any elemental attributes, appears in the form of white flames. Yamato then swings the chakra-imbued weapon vertically, releasing the condensed energy in the form of a 3-foot wide wave of chakra rising from the ground and extending forward 200 meters. This attack, despite its entirely spiritual makeup, feels like a sharp edge on contact and cuts rather than impacts. The name of this technique is derived from its height, which stretches high enough that it cuts through clouds as it travels.
▰▰▰ Yōta Yōta is a happy little Pug. He's fairly small for a Sage creature, small enough that he can sit on Shinji's shoulders without looking out of place. Yōta is fully capable of talking, but often doesn't. This pug seems to be incredibly durable, but lacks the physical fitness to participate in intense combat for very long. He isn't the most intelligent of creatures, but is incredibly loyal and friendly. Rank A | Chakra: 1750 | Stamina: 800 Stats: Endurance 8
Ability:A whole lotta drool Yōta naturally produces a constant, and definitely unnatural amount of drool for a creature his size. Shinji can use this drool as a water source for Suiton attacks. Additionally, any of Yōta's drool used in a technique (either by Yōta or by Shinji) can be affected by Shinji's "Enhancement of Life's Source" PA.
▰ Eldritch Pug [ Japanese name ] | Rank: E | Cost: Chakra Whenever Yōta is the recipient of an attack that would remove him from combat, or otherwise incapacitate him, this technique seems to make him momentarily impervious to damage. HOWEVER, he will still become incapable of participating in the fight in any capacity. (Ask me about it in Discord.)
▰ Splatter [ Japanese name ] | Rank: C | Cost: chakra Yōta leaps into the air while spinning, using chakra to exaggerate the amount of drool he produces for a moment. The drool, while spinning, is flung haphazardly around the area. Those directly hit by this drool are marked, and can be tracked by Shinji while in Sage mode.
▰ Liquid Bark [ Japanese name ] | Rank: S | Cost: chakra The only offensive move in Yōta's arsenal, this technique involves a sudden and high pitched bark that echoes through the area, causing tier 2 deafness in those who hear the bark within 10 meters of the dog, unless chakra is used to dampen the effect, along with a deceptively strong wave of force echoing outward for 30 meters that is capable of knocking enemies backward.

▰ Vacuum Style: Erasure [ Shinkū sutairu: Shōkyo ] | Rank X In an eruption of chakra, the user sucks out all the oxygen in a targeted area within 50 feet of themselves. The vacuum created increases from a 1 foot radius at E rank to 5 feet at D rank, to 10 feet at C rank and increasing by 10 feet every rank after, to a maximum of 50 feet at S+. At A-S+ ranks, the vacuum must be centered on the user’s body. The only air that exists in this zone is a small safety bubble around the user that fits perfectly to their bodies. As its creator moves this dome will stay fixed in its original location. Opponents that are in the vacuum zone when it is created or when entering it for the first time have their breath stolen right from their lungs causing tier 4 suffocation, with the exception that everyone except for the user is giving one activations worth of time to leave the bubble or lose consciousness. The sort of drawback to this ability is that no wind release jutsu of any kind that are not Vacuum style are permitted within its boundaries. Additionally, as with all vacuum jutsu, it lacks its ordinary weakness to the fire element. Meaning same rank collisions when dealing with it. Lasts for four posts or unless the user ends the jutsu earlier.
A few decades ago, after some infighting and disagreement within the Ketsueki clan, a small group of the clan's members split off from the main settlement and moved to Arashigakure, swearing allegiance to the village. After some time, the suspicions involving their ties to their previous home were dismissed when the rest of the Ketsueki clan attempted an assault on Arashigakure in order to dismantle the outliers. The assault was handled by several members of the Arashigakure forces, but the resident members of the clan helped out as well, quelling the attack before they could do any serious damage. The Ketsueki settlers developed their own set of elders and a council over time in order to preserve the Bloodline of their clan. This branch of the Ketsueki is where Shinji, and his parents before him, were born.
Growing up, the young Shinji was boisterous and craved adventure. His outgoing nature was, at first, nurtured by his parents. However, after he grew old enough to begin playing with others in the village, they began to stifle his energetic personality and keep him from going out. See, even if the Ketsueki in Arashigakure had left due to infighting, they didn't change their beliefs. Shinji was kept away from other kids and was instead pushed to train and study in order to gain a better control over his chakra. The other kids in the village saw Shinji occasionally when he stepped outside to practice, but his parents made sure to keep their son away from the other villagers to keep Shinji pure.
Once he was old enough to join the academy, the elders of the Ketsueki clan approached the boy and gave him a speech about keeping to himself. They told him that if he ever wanted to be a powerful shinobi from the Ketsueki clan, he had to stay vigilant in his training and avoid the distractions that would come from other students. In order to further encourage this behavior from the boy, a few of the clans senior members, including his mother, set out to gather materials to craft the boy a weapon. Something unique that only he would be able to master. This process took several weeks, during which time they kept it a secret from Shinji and his father. See, his father wasn’t as keen on the idea of arming such a young boy as his mother was.
His father didn’t believe in fighting unless it was absolutely necessary. He worked in the village as a carpenter. He would rather his son follow in his footsteps than become a ninja. His mother, on the other hand, fully supported Shinji’s desire to become a shinobi. She had a deep respect for the militant forces of Arashigakure and often wondered if she should have pursued becoming a ninja herself. She had spent many years in her younger age learning the clans Saiketsu techniques, but she felt that she was too frail to enroll in the academy. The two often argued over the path Shinji chose to take, but only because they had differing views on the matter. They loved each other very much, and at the end of the day, they both decided that it was his choice, whether his father liked it or not.
After the weapon was created, the clan elders once again approached Shinji, a few weeks before he was due to start classes at the academy. His mother sent his father out to gather groceries so that he couldn’t protest in front of the heads of their clan. They brought forth a scythe, setting it on the ground before him carefully along with a scroll. Shinji looked at the weapon with a bit of caution at first. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but as he looked the weapon over he felt a deep sense of admiration for the craftsmanship and the unique design that it had. His mother made sure that it was designed to fit his more gothic appreciation of things. As such, the schematics they used to create the weapon mirrored skeletal structures and had a very grim appearance.
They clarified that the use of the scroll was to complete the forging process. He was instructed to open the scroll and give the weapon a name, writing it on the blank pages within. Shinji thought about it for a moment. He decided on the name Yuugure. Translated into english, the word Yuugure meant dusk, which is why he felt it was such a fitting name; it furthered the horrific and grisly architecture they had put into the scythe. The elders nodded in approval, to which they then said for him to p***k his finger and wipe his blood along the scroll. He was skeptical. If all he had to do was pick a name, why was it necessary to have him use blood? Shinji didn’t think too long on this and obeyed. His mother rolled up the scroll and bound it in a red thread before handing it to the head of the elders. A man who looked older than dirt. The wrinkles on his face made it often hard to read his expression, a trait that Shinji didn’t particularly enjoy, as it made it incredibly difficult to understand what the geezer was feeling.
That aside, he was well respected among the clan and was the most adept among them when It came to performing sealing techniques. He took the scroll and placed it above the blade of the weapon. After a series of one handed seals, the scroll erupted in fire. It burned from both ends and met in the middle, turning it completely to ash. The fire didn’t seem to bother the elder; not even leaving so much as a slight burn on his hand. The ash leftover began to shift around before taking to the air and encircling the snaithe of the scythe. Beneath the pile of ashes, a sealing insignia could be seen, with markings stretching around the blade at first, but it followed the ashes path along the snaith until there were lines running along its entirety. They didn’t last, though. When the elder released the last seal he had performed with his hand, the marks melted into the weapon, leaving no trace of them behind.
The rest of the elders moved forward, all of them at once attempting to heft the blade into the air. To Shinji’s surprise, they couldn’t seem to lift it from the ground. It didn’t even budge. Irritation flooded his body. What good was a weapon if he couldn’t even pick it up?! His mother noticed his frustration, but calmly told him to give it a try. The elders backed away to give him room. Shinji rolled his eyes, but reached out with a hand to shove the weapon. His eyes went wide when it skidded along the floor. Shinji leaped to his feet and grabbed hold of the snaith, picking it up. It felt lighter than air!
His mother explained that the seal performed has linked Yuugure directly to Shinji, meaning that others couldn’t pick it up unless he handed the scythe directly to them. To further prove this, she held her hand out and asked Shinji to hand it to her. When it was placed in her hand, she showed no signs of struggling with the weight, but he could tell that it wasn’t as light as it was for Shinji. Immediately he ran outside to test the weapon out for himself. He found that the seal also prevented him from being cut by the blade, almost like his skin was like iron to the weapon. It interested him deeply. This would surely set him apart from the other academy students. He went to sleep that night with an irremovable smile.
The Academy
In the weeks following his pact with Yuugure, Shinji started attending the ninja academy. He wasn’t the only one there with a weapon of their own, which did make him feel a bit less special, but he noticed that none of them were particularly flashy like his was. His disappointment was easily offset by this. Taking note, specifically of Shinji, of the amount of weapons that the students had, the instructor immediately made a decree to the class that the use of weapons in the classroom was a rule for them to follow, and any use of weapons outside of the classroom had to be overseen by the instructor. Anyone who broke that rule was to be immediately expelled. Shinji grimaced at this. He wanted to show off what Yuugure was capable of, having spent the last couple of weeks training and learning his weapon in depth.
They dove straight into book work. They covered the history of Arashigakure, then the history of the shinobi world as a whole. A few of the things they had learned during the history lessons sent chills down his spine. War, disaster, and demons that had the potential to wipe out entire countries on their own. There seemed to be a heavy amount of chaos in the shinobi life. This didn’t shake Shinji’s determination. Instead of turning away, he looked straight forward. The stories of the powerful ninja who had overcome these events made him want to get even stronger than normal shinobi. He wanted to be revered as a hero like the legends from these stories. The first of the Ketsueki to gain that title.
He didn't show any outstanding potential when it came to the academics. His grades when it came to the paper assignments were nothing to take home. A modest C or a B at best. However, Shinji showed great potential when it came to the physical exams. He was able to spar with the rest of the class and remain unbeaten in the hand-to-hand classes, save for the student who was at the head of the class; a prodigy who was a few notches above the rest, but Shinji did give him a run for his money. What gave Shinji a big head was the weapon practice sessions. Regardless of whether he was given a kunai blade, shuriken, or the green light to use Yuugure; Shinji was regarded as the classes top weapon specialist. Even the one he lost to in hand-to-hand seemed completely out of his element when compared to Shinji.
It was because of this proficiency with weapons that, come graduation, when they were picking the top students to receive accolades for their performance over the time spent at the academy, that Shinji was one of the frontrunners chosen to be given special mention. Among them was also the resident prodigy of the class for his hand-to-hand showings, the smartest student in the class who was doubly noted for their overall testing grades and their showings when it came to the basic techniques they had been taught, and the class president. These students were the first to be given their headbands and the title of Genin. Through all of this, he didn’t bother making friends. Many of the students asked for Shinji to teach them how to use weapons, but he refused. He had a duty to uphold when it came to his clan.
The elders congratulated him on his promotion and promised that, when he was older, they would teach him the clan secrets. Shinji argued that he had already shown he was more than capable of learning it, but they calmed him and told him that he still had room to grow before he learned it. They explained that the requirements for learning the technique required him to be of a certain age because the complexity of the techniques meant that he needed to learn to control his chakra nature. It wasn’t something that they taught at the academy, and it would take him a fair deal of time before he had the level of proficiency he would need. Shinji still wasn’t satisfied with this, but he decided that they knew more about the secret than anyone.
Catastrophe Rising
When the sirens signalling the attack on the village began, Shinji was in the middle of training. It was the moment he was preparing for, the chance to be of greater use to the village than some lowly genin who wasn't worth their salt. However, the time he had spent casting various techniques in rapid succession had left him too low on his already minute chakra pool to be of any real help. At most he could have been a body shield for someone better, but then he'd still probably end up being in the way. In a world where was was constantly looming on the horizon, the worst thing one could do was impede the progress of a soldier's advancement.
In his hesitation, the only thought that broke through his mind was the Kage. The head of the village. He would be a prime target for the enemy's forces, but it looked like everyone was rushing away. That gave him a bit of clarity on where he needed to go. Once he had rushed to Toso's office, Kagami and her officers had shown up. One an Uchiha by the name of Naoki, the other a much larger woman who appeared to be some kind of... demon? The events in the office didn't seem to amount to much violence. A small altercation between Naoki and one of the other Arashi shinobi who had shown up, a bit of irritation from the larger woman, but in essence it was more of a conversation between Kagami and Toso regarding the future of the shinobi world and the course of action that should be taken.
At the climax of the debate, Kagami had fooled them all. She revealed that she was pregnant, and used this revelation to play the heartstrings of all in attendance like a well-tuned violin. She was a master manipulator. Once she had been given the authority to use the PA system in Toso's office, she showed her true colors. A woman of complete, chaotic evil who's idealistic worldview was corrupt in execution. She attempted to cast a village-wide genjutsu in order to strip Arashigakure of its citizens, claiming that it was a prison and they were forced into their continued loyalty to their home. As would be expected of the head of the village, Toso had a contingency plan set in motion for just an occasion. A small device hidden away sent out a wave of energy that broke the genjutsu before it had done any permanent damage.
And that was all Shinji could process before the blue haired woman before him was ripped into pieces. At first, he was shocked. After all, a death before your very eyes was a good way to cause lasting mental damage. And not just a murder, a complete and utter massacre. Toso gave an order to be left alone, and Shinji obliged in the fuzzy state of shock he had been forced into. Once outside, he rested on the floor and tried to gather himself as the shock wore off. From the window, he could see the Sanbi for a brief moment, further proving that the woman who had staged an invasion of the village because of mistreatment brought about by the UHV system, had passed on.
The Years Following the War
After the attack on Arashigakure was dealt with, Shinji made his way through the village, taking in the damage and compartmentalizing a list of things that he could help with during the reconstruction. Construction was something he knew fairly well, since his father was a carpenter. He could hold a small day care service to keep the younger kids busy while their parents were working. He could run around and gather needed supplies for others. He stopped making this list when he noticed the amount of wounded that were being tended to. Shinji dropped everything and rushed to help out. He didn’t have any skill in Eiseijutsu, but he had enough basic medical knowledge thanks to his clan that he could treat some of the wounds to help keep them alive long enough for the medics to get to them. Despite his willingness to help, the sight horrified him. Shinji was running on pure adrenaline. If it wasn’t for that, he would have been frozen in place.
There were severed limbs and pools of blood randomly scattered from the severity of the battle. Some of the wounded they brought in had already passed from their injuries. One of the shinobi Shinji took to treating was horribly hurt. There was a hole blasted straight through his abdomen, and several deep lacerations lining his body. He treated lacerations first, seeing that whatever had burst through his stomach had also cauterized the injury. Most likely a completely overpowering Katon technique, but it could have been anything for as far as he knew. As he was stitching up as much of the cuts as he could, the soldier stopped him with a hand on the wrist. His eyes were lifeless,r and his voice was hoarse.
”Thanks kid, but it’s no use, I’m dying. Don’t protest it, just let me go. But do me a favor. My sword... Take it. I got it from my father, him from his father. I don’t have a son to give it to, but you seem like a good boy. Its name is..” He trailed off into a coughing fit. Once he stopped, he gasped for breath for a moment before continuing. ”Arashi no Chiheisen. It’s a good sword, I promise. Don’t let her appearance confuse that. She’s too young to be put out of commission yet. She’s yours now. You said your names Shinji? I hope you put her to good use.” With that he passed away. At first, Shinji was shocked. A few tears fell down his cheek, but he quickly wiped them away. Now wasn’t the time for tears. There was work to do. He grabbed the sword that he had inherited tentatively and continued rushing around the wounded, enlightening the nurses of the mans death. He never even got his name...
Once the initial cleanup of the war was over, the village wasn’t the same for Shinji. Rather, he couldn’t look at it the same. He was still loyal to his home, but the sight of the ruin caused him grief every time he saw them. He became an oddity. His withdrawn nature that the other genin had noted from him was put aside as he set to work helping with various tasks. He assisted in several reconstruction jobs, using the Mizu Bunshin no Jutsu technique to be in two places at once to speed up the process. At first his clone wasn’t able to sustain being out for so long, due to his inexperience, but he quickly mastered the technique from how often he used it, and his clones were able to stay out from the time he summoned them to the time he went home that night. He gathered resources when the sun went down before he went to bed, in order to do more work the next day.
During the weekends, rather than go and help build, he went to the hospital and worked around there, doing checkups on patients and working in the emergency wing dealing with the more minor cases. After his shift at the hospital was over, Shinji would go out and gather the younger kids and play with them to give their parents space to work, going as far as providing their supper for them and even tucking them into bed at night individually. He repeated this cycle for some time, yet no one noticed the changes in Shinji’s personality. See, he had learned to hide what he was really feeling. He attributed this to the way he was able to read people so easily, referring to it as a reverse-engineering of that same process. None of them even noticed he wasn’t carrying either of his weapons.
After seeing the casualties of the war, and the death of the person who had bequeathed Arashi no Chiheisen onto him, Shinji had been having chronic nightmares. They woke him up often enough during the night that it was almost like he wasn’t sleeping at all. It began to instill a fear in him unlike anything he had experienced before, quickly devolving into paranoia. He stopped carrying Yuugure with him, and left the sword he was given hidden away in his closet, behind his clothes. He shut everyone out, even keeping his parents at arm's length. They often wondered what was going on with him, but his response was always a curt ‘I’m fine.’ His mother eventually went to the Arashikage and asked him to have some of the village Jonin check on him periodically in order to make sure that he wasn’t going to do anything reckless. She never got a definitive answer but was sent home anyway.
Over time, Shinji’s paranoia had taken a series of nasty effects on him. His refusal to let anyone get close to him caused him to feel a terrible loneliness, which eventually manifested in full blown depression and a deep self-esteem problem. He felt he was too weak to be called a shinobi, and his drive to get stronger conflicted with this, causing him to often go out when he couldn’t sleep and train until he could barely move from exhaustion. He showed little progress in his eyes, not seeing that his use of the Suiton techniques he had learned was leagues above where they were when he started training them, frustrating him to no end. Over the course of this cycle, he started to feel angry. Not the kind of anger that someone gets a flash of momentarily, or the kind that goes away over time. This was the kind of anger that festered, boiling inside with no outlet, eating away at their temper and messing with their mind.
Shinji’s late-night training sessions became a daytime ritual as well. He started sneaking off whenever his work was done for the day and rush out to the woods on the edge of the village where he wouldn’t be seen, then push himself even more. He often got so frustrated during these sessions that he would lash out with everything he had, tearing at trees and earth alike. There were several spots in the forest where a clearing was made from trees being knocked down, and hundreds of trees have deep scars in the wood from his outbursts. Little did he know that there were times when he was followed by a Jonin, sent by the Arashikage to check on him per his mother’s request.
Eviction from Life
When the samurai of Zaishin began invading the Land of Floods, Shinji jumped at the opportunity to assist in the effort to fend them off. He felt as if the combat he would see there would either sharpen his skills, or show the other shinobi from Arashi that had joined the effort that he was equal to them. However, that isn't what happened. Instead, Shinji was struck from behind by an unseen force, mortally wounding him. As the Zaishin army was pushed back, a team of medical ninja was able to recover him. His pulse was weak, but still beating. The blood loss he suffered was immense. He had nearly been dried out, but thanks to his Ketsueki lineage, he had naturally produced enough blood to stave off death.
The medical team, in a last ditch effort to save him, performed a mass blood transfusion. They weren't quite sure where the blood had come from, but the theory was that his Ketsueki DNA would allow for any and all blood they had available to replenish his supply without any hiccups. The effort wasn't in vain. He did survive the event, and was able to be transferred back to Arashigakure's hospital. However, he was left in a comatose state. His vitals fluctuated, dipping down to near death some days, and other days stronger than they had ever been. But still, he did not wake. Over time, the medical staff of the hospital determined that any life sustaining measures they had been using needed to be withdrawn. If he was going to wake, he would do so on his own.
As time went on, he did not stir, but he could still pick up on conversations within the building. Every major event that stirred both within the confines of Arashigakure and the wider world was eventually picked up by Shinji's unconscious ears as Nurses and Doctors went over the details in the hallways. Recently, nurses would walk by his hospital room and notice a slight change in him. Atrophied muscles seemed to be restructuring themselves, building his strength back up. Then, he vanished from the hospital without a trace. The first thing he would notice when he was out of the hospital, was that his Ketsueki abilities had been lost, and replaced with something new to him. He set out to practice with these new abilities.
Following his awaking from his coma, Shinji quickly returned to his duties in the ANBU corps. He threw himself into his work, undertaking one mission after another and still volunteering for more as a way to make up for the time he lost and to re-hone his skills. He was brought up to speed regarding the corrupting influence that was found in the APD and the wicked dealings they were involved in. Thankfully they had already located the ringleader of the trafficking operations and he had been dealt with. However, their actions had weakened the already tentative trust Arashi citizens had in the law enforcement agency. The situation was delicate, and needed to be approached carefully. Disaster was looming, but Shinji, and the ANBU force as a whole, couldn't step in to stop it.
During the growing tensions, Shinji had been sent on a mission that was top-secret, and one that would require a long stretch of time before he could return. The details of the mission weren't disclosed to him, and wouldn't be revealed until the unit he was assigned to reached their destination.
It was during this mission that Shinji became the 8 tails host. The village had received reports that Jashinists were planning to retrieve the hachibi, and wanted to send a small unit of ANBU agents to try and thwart that plan before they could enact it. What they found was an already released Gyuki, and they resorted to sealing the beast inside of Shinji rather than risking him falling into Jashinist hands. Whatever happened to the previous host was unknown. During their trek back to the village, the Riots started.
Shinji found out after it was all said and done that the Arashikage had lost her life, as well as the seven-tails jinchuriki. Musica had been injured and was hospitalized. The ANBU was doing their best to try and keep eyes on the citizens without reviving the tension. They weren't looking for participants in the Riots, they were trying to locate information on the hooded individual who had taken their Kage's life. Shinji opted out of the investigation. Instead he turned his focus on himself, what he could have done better, what he could do better in the future. It brought him back to the same obsessive thought that plagued him when he was a boy. "I need to be stronger."
Shinji poured over files that the ANBU had amassed on many notable individuals. The data wasn't complete, but it would give him a starting point. His goal was to locate someone who could point him in the direction of the Sage Lands. The legendary creatures who resided their, and the lucky few who were trained under their tutelage, were known to be much stronger than a normal person. He wanted to be taught by them, to learn the ways of their natural energy in order to gain the strength needed to become a better protector of his village. One of the names he had come across was that of the Kumoito empress Unki Amano.
Shinji left the village after reporting a temporary leave of absence, claiming that he needed to remain off duty until he found a way to suppress the Eight-tails chakra in order to maintain his anonymity as an agent. He decided that he would travel to Kumoito and gain an audience with the Empress under the guise of a good-will mission from the village, since the two hadn't had an official friendship meeting after Toso had stepped down from the position. During his meeting with the empress, Shinji signed the Inuseki Park contract before they were interrupted by Kenshin's visit to the Keep, signifying that a new Kage had been appointed.
Shinji's journey back to the village was stalled. He needed to take a moment to meditate, review the recent events and figure out his next move. Gyuki attempted to use his meditation as a way to force control over him. Shinji, unbeknownst to him, exerted control over the beast using the Reiken virtues and engaged in a conversation with Gyuki. The two came to a mutual, yet temporary, agreement regarding the housing of the beast. The two were then called to a deeper telepathic communication between hosts and beasts regarding the most recent development in the Jashinist plots.[/
