Gwyn

Ah, good, the green one had bounded away from the scene. She passed Gwyn in doing so, but that was fine. The last time she'd stood here, she'd witnessed hatchlings going pretty much everywhere before settling upon a particular individual. If the green one wanted her, she wouldn't need to go chasing her.

Thankfully, the bronze had calmed down, having made it clear that he was in charge. And he seemed perfectly content with posing now, allowing everyone to gaze upon his sheer perfection.

----------

Avali

Realizing almost too late that there was another hatchling approaching, at speed, Avali didn't have time to move before the green one made tracks away from them. Oh, and she had seemed so nice, too! A bit energetic, but nice.

The one that approached, now at a more leisurely pace, was a dark bronze who seemed very proud and regal. Given his charge across the Sands a moment ago, he certainly was a bold one, not afraid to face a challenge. To her, he seemed wonderful. And he seemed to know it, as well.

Shyly, Avali dipped her head in a polite bow. He certainly was worthy of one!

S'var

S'var walked quickly through the echoing tunnels of the lower caverns, he'd been down deep in the storerooms when the humming had started and so it seemed that he was going to be one of the last to arrive. Hoping that he hadn't missed too much, especially that he hadn't missed one of his grandchildren Impressing. Nevertheless he walked rather than running, S'var generally only ran if something was on fire.

As he rounded the corner that led to the hatching cavern however S'var discovered that he wasn't alone in being late, he could make out a figure leaning in the entryway... Looking for a seat? S'var's brow furrowed and he lengethened his stride a little more, something wasn't right and the closer he got the more certain he grew of that fact. As he came up beside the slight woman he realised who she was, and that explained everything.

"Kesarin?" S'var reached out to touch the former goldrider's arm gently, hoping to offer some comfort or at least an anchor outside of her own thoughts but without being over familiar. "Would you like to sit down?" From the way she looked he wondered if leaving might not be the better thing for her but he wasn't going to patronize her by saying that, if she wanted to go he was sure she'd tell him.

S'var

Kesarin
How long had she been stood here? Time didn't seem to matter anymore. It felt like seconds and candlemarks all at the same time. It had been two turns. This was supposed to be behind her. This wasn't supposed to happen anymore. Yet here she was. Not even back inside the hatching cavern and made incapable.

Reality had all but fallen away when Kesarin felt a gentle touch on her arm. She flinched, harder than was usual. Almost dislodging Jitter from where he was pressed, trembling, against her face. Overly wild eyes darted to S'var, then everywhere else, before returning to the brownrider. She didn't know him in a personal capacity, but the Southern entourage were so few that even disjointed from the Weyr as she was Kesarin could recognise him.

His question was slow to register. "I- I need- I need to- to- Uh-" Squeezing her eyes shut the young woman looked down at the ground. Her hand against the wall tightened into a fist as shame welled up alongside everything else. Tears that had been threatening finally started to fall. It was a happy occasion and this was what she was again. Shouldn't be here. An ugly reminder of the past, when people only wanted to move on. Go back. Back out of sight. You would only upset them. You made things harder. You should have gone with her!

Jitter shrieked at the thought, jolting Kesarin out of her spiral for the second time. Looking at the tiny blue she instantly regretted the thought. This poor bundle of nerves needed her. That was why she was here. Lunathor. If he needed to look up into the stands and see someone, and that someone was her, she was going to go through with this. Looking back at S'var the former rider wiped a hand across her face. "I'm sorry." The poor man had just been wanting to attend the hatching. "That would be good. Sitting down I mean." She hated the way that her voice still shook. The way that trembles still ran through her body. Jitter crooned gently and nuzzled her face. He knew about trembles. They weren't so bad.

Kiliran
A green and a bronze. They were so much bigger than he'd thought they would be. It was hard to imagine something that size tucked up inside of an egg. Leaping had been first, and the young man was not even a little bit surprised. Atta girl. He thought towards the green. She had wanted to be first. Now she just had to be first to find her rider. Had Leaping decided what her rider would be like yet? Something told Kiliran that it would be very different from what the other hatchling on the sands wanted. Heart seemed like a proud one. Kiliran had to give the dragon his due, he was very handsome even fresh from the egg. Maybe he could have been gentler with his sister, but Kiliran didn't know enough about the subject to try telling a dragon what they should and shouldn't be doing.

It seemed like things were kicking off fast. Leaping was trotting looking for her rider, Heart was focused on a little cluster, and many of the eggs were starting their own attempts at hatching. How did candidate's keep up with all of this. Kiliran stole a glance at the eggs, before looking back at Leaping. She was closest, so it made sense to give the green most of his attention. If only to make sure he wasn't in her way.

Someone speaking beside him distracted Kiliran. Turning his head he looked at the female candidate beside him. Was she narrating? To herself? The young woman certainly didn't look like she was talking to anyone in particular. It couldn't be to the dragons either given the way she referred to them. It seemed odd, but Kiliran wasn't one to judge. It took all types as his mother used to say, and that idea seemed even more present among the ranks of candidates.

Telleara
The vibrant Leaping quickly darted off. There, problem solved. Heart got he wanted, Leaping seemed no worse for wear. Things ran so much smoother when people knew their places. Heart approached and Telleara smiled, almost feeling like she was meeting a friend again. Really she shouldn't presume that the bronze was as fond of her as she was of him. They'd gotten along so well, but how much of that did a dragon really remember once they hatched.

Still as the handsome bronze stood in front of her (and the other candidates), the young woman could barely contain her glee. Taking hold of her robe the young woman curtsied low to the bronze, the depth usually reserved for when she had visited people of standing with her parents. "Good morning, Sir. You are even more handsome than I expected. Forgive my underestimation." She hoped Heart would stick around for a little while. Telleara knew that he needed to go and find his rider, but it would still be sad to watch him go. The thought had her glancing back at the eggs, her gaze landing on Sun's Ray. Telleara assumed that the other would be along shortly. They at least would get to grow up with Heart. For some reason the idea of the two not being parted gave the young woman comfort. Telleara couldn't look after Heart, but she had complete confidence that Sun's Ray would care for their sibling even more than she could have.

Kiliran

Suddenly the Leaping green stopped dead, eyes wide and head raised as something plucked at her mind. Giving a very quiet hum the lanky hatchling cast around for the source of the feeling, a pull as undeniable as the tides or the flow of time itself. Several moments passed in stillness and silence before she cried aloud with joy and burst into action once more, taking off at a dead sprint towards Kiliran.

I have decided what my rider shall be like Kiliran, and I shall be the first too! I am your Ostarath, and we shall be the first together - the best together!

When Ostarath bounded joyously into her rider's arms the Heart bronze gave another bellow of consternation; again? But there was no taking back what she had done and so he merely huffed his indignation before turning his attention back to the group before him. The nod of the head was good but the deep curtsey was better and Heart hummed his pleasure as he walked towards Telleara with his eyes glittering as blue and beautiful as sapphires... But then he stopped, snorted, and shook his head as though to clear it. For a moment his eyes flashed orange and then turned his back on the little gathering and stalked away without another glance.

As Heart moved onward the bright orange, boldy marked Fantastic egg chose that moment to live up to its name and shatter into several large shards, leaving a vivid green lying on her back in the sand.

She observed the world upside-down for some slightly puzzled seeming moments before letting out a trumpet of triumph and scrambling to her feet - hello world, here she was!

Siv

One moment, Leaping was still, and then, very suddenly, Siv moved[/i. Any who saw the candidate would know she didn't seem the quick type, but, it seemed in a flash and flurry of motion she skid put pf Ostarpth's way, instead of saying hello to her rider who seemed to star.

"Shards, is that Impression?! I'll need to be more careful of where the hatchlings are, shells..." The candidate shook her shaggy head a moment before looking over to the sound of the Fantastic egg, and snorted amusement.

"And another green seizes the stage... But wjhat's our little bronze doing?" Siv looked towards Heart, and arched a brow, humming. "Evidently he's had fill of their admiration and seeks it elsewhere, or perhaps he seeks a Rider. 'Nother one to becareful of, that one. Seems good, but don't need to get run over before I finish my observaytions today... Perhaps moving for the stragglers away from the herd? Hm."A shrug. The other candidates were capable of caution..... At least if they had common sense, and Siv ghave a shrug. Not her responsibility. Her responsibility was hjerself and not getting maimed. Yhat would put her research backfor months! IT WAS IMPORTANT, BLAST IT.

Gwyn

It didn't seem to take the green very long to find her rider. With a small, sideways grin, Gwyn turned her attention to another egg as it broke, spilling another green onto the Sands. This one also seemed pretty joyful. She noticed that the bronze had suddenly turned away from where he'd been to go elsewhere. Hmm... He'd seemed like a pretty serious one in the shell, and so far that seemed to be holding true. It seemed those he'd faced a moment ago weren't worthy of him, so she figured he'd gone to find that special someone.

----------

Avali

As the dark bronze hummed and headed towards the bullying girl, Avali stayed completely still. Wide eyed, she watched as the incredible hatchling drew nearer... and then her jaw dropped when his eyes shifted from blue to orange, and he shook his head. A moment later, he was gone. The girl hadn't realized until then that she'd been holding her breath in anticipation of a moment that had never happened, and let it out again silently.

Looking away, she caught sight of the new green on the Sands. Oh, how charming!

When Leaping froze Kiliran wondered if perhaps there was something wrong. Her searching gaze went some way to soothe him. Maybe this was how dragon's worked? Something clearly had her attention, so maybe it was fine. The few moments that the young green was still were rather tense. For Kiliran at least. For the vibrant green to go so still it must be very important.

Then her eyes fell on him and the world was back in motion. Leaping cried out, running towards him, and Kiliran didn't think he'd ever felt such elation.

I have decided what my rider shall be like Kiliran, and I shall be the first too! I am your Ostarath, and we shall be the first together - the best together!

"That's my girl, yeah we will!" His girl. Ostarath was his. His vibrant, beautiful, wonderful girl. The green rushed into his mind as swiftly as she rushed to his arms. Kiliran managed about two hurried steps before the young dragon leapt into his arms. Holding her close the young man laughed, spinning the green around. It was as though someone had lit a glow inside his heart. Ostarath interwove with his mind and brought so much joy in her wake. Eagerly she rubbed her head against the new weyrling's face as he spun her around.

Even when he lost his balance, landing on his rump with a thud, Kiliran didn't stop laughing or holding her tight. Everything else in the cavern fell away. The bronze's irritation, the new green on the sands, the remaining candidates. Nothing mattered except the ball of energy in his arms. "Let me get a look at you, my beautiful girl." The young man crooned, taking hold of Ostarath's face in his hands. The dragon managed to at least half stand still, her feet shuffling and her wings rustling as she stared up into her rider's eyes. It was him! Her Kiliran! Her boy! Ostarath had heard him!

A gurgle broke the pair from each others' spells, as hunger brought them back to reality. Kiliran became aware of the heat from the sands slowly working its way into him. "I think it's time we get you something to eat, huh?" Ostarath perked up immediately at the word, bouncing happily back and forth as Kiliran stood up. The green so excited that once the lad was to his feet she took off towards the feeding tables at a dead run.

"Hey, Ostarath, wait up!" Kiliran called as he took off after the bounding green, but all he got was her light-hearted laughter in return.

Kakar clenched his fists, Not grateful in the least for the other girl getting between him and Telleara "I don't need YOUR help" he practically growled at Avali, he did not want to have to deal with this today of all days ... not on a hatching day. He gritted his teeth, "piss off Telleara, you're so self centered you'd send your dragon between before it Impressed because you only care about yourself" he snapped, he'd have said more but an egg rolled towards them, then hatched into a pretty green, followed by a loud CRACK and a bronze hatching and he had no mind for either girl anymore. He was 100% sure that neither was for him, but he did watch the Bronze with more interest than the green, though he wouldn't have minded her either.

His thought, for the green at least, was confirmed when she Impressed, leaving the bronze still searching, his heart in his mouth as he moved towards where he was standing... for him to .. what?! ... he looked at Telleara? .. oh shards was she going to Impress him? ... phew, seemed not, but his stomach sank as the bronze walked away, bitter tears stung his eyes. Another egg hatching revealing an upsidedown green almost made him chuckle, and would have, had things not just transpired before him, the only consolation was that the Bronze hadn't wanted Telleara.

Off to one side of the clutch the Hoarding egg gave a sudden shake and a loud crack rang out through the sands; small though it was it seemed that this one was determined not to be left behind or overlooked! Beside the remains of the Heart egg the Sun's Ray egg was on the move too but one would have to look far more closely at it to see the subtle shifting and delicate cracks that were beginning to form on its shell, and it might indeed have gone unnoticed by many had Heart not swivelled his head around to it and let out a soft warble. His mission to impress, and Impress, forgotten for a moment he trotted over to the green egg and nudged it gently with his muzzle - time to come out!

As Heart approached the clutch once more Fantastic's eyes suddenly began to pulse in shades of vivid green and blue. As the bronze walked passed her she crouched low to the ground, wriggled her hindquarters... And seemed to think better of it, or perhaps she was just distracted? Standing upright once more she swept the Sands with her bright eyes and gave a curious, hopeful warble. Who had that been?

Apparently unable to pick out the sound or the thought that had caught her attention from where she was she abandoned her mission to put her arrogant brother in his place and set off towards the white robed masses.

As she moved however a high call from back amongst the eggs brought her up short, and she turned her head just in time to witness the hatching of the Apex egg. Given its size relative to its siblings many would be surprised to see another green yet green she clearly was, and she was on a mission.

User Image

Fantastic just about had time to skitter out of her newly hatched sibling's path as the intent, intense green galloped across the sands at full speed and directly into the arms of a candidate.

As the metaphorical dust settled Fantastic turned back to the candidates and almost seemed to grin - that had been close! Apparently she was unperturbed by nearly being trampled by her larger sister however for she simply picked up where she had left off and continued her keen but somehow casual trot towards the throng.

Siv shifted her sytance. Where befiore she'd stood plainly and amiably, watching the pair of scurrying dragons, now there were three as the eggs hatched in earnest -- a third joining the melee and forching Siv to go from calm to far more alert, and prone to quick bursts of motion to escape dragons. For a moments, s, she thought Fanyastic has impressed, but no, she too, was dodging the new green, and Siv frowned in some concern.

"And another one joins to fray..." She muttered, and frowned carefully, feet prepared to sidestep running dragons as she looked around. Best keep alert.

Gwyn

More of the eggs seemed to be rocking and cracking now. The tiny egg off to the side was in motion now, which was excellent to see. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sudden appearance of a green hatchling from the Apex egg darting by, to someone just two people away from her. Well, that one certainly didn't waste any time!

----------

Avali

Oh, the little purple egg had moved, and clearly cracked its shell too! And... Yes the tall green sunlit egg was also quivering, though not as noticeably. Still, given how warm, welcoming, and helpful as they had been, it was little wonder that she shifted her focus to watching every tiny fissure that appeared on its shell. When the bronze went over to encourage it, Avali smiled. She wondered who would be so lucky as to Impress this brave gentleman, and who the hatchling within the now cracking shell would choose...
PostPosted: Sun Dec 15, 2019 9:09 am
Kakar turned his attention to where Hoarding let out a crack, then to Sun's ray as the bronze drew people's attention to it, had he been encouraging the egg.... or making people look at it? hmmmm. He had no thoughts now for the girls as he watched the upsidedown green right herself and seemed to about to pounce the bronze...nope.. maybe not. The antics lifted his spirits a little, he felt himself hoping.

He held his breath as Fantastic green made her way towards the candidates, himself among them, then gasped as Apex hatched, raced and Impressed in what seemed all in one breath.. wow. He didn't think he'd ever seen such a fast Impression, that one must have been very sure of Hers before she even hatched. He turned his attention back to the nearby green.

Telleara

"Well then it wouldn't be my dragon, would it, genius?" Telleara commented dryly. Well at least he'd tried to defend himself. Kakar was largely forgotten though one Heart bellowed again. Beaten to the post by his little sister once again. Now she almost felt bad for him taking the time to visit as it had interrupted his plans.

When Heart hummed and approached her Telleara couldn't help but grin. He was even more handsome up close. She would have to find whoever he chose when the time came. Even if, by some cruel trick of fate, they turned out to be terribly mundane, Telleara would at least congratulate them on their gorgeous impression. When the bronze stopped and turned away Telleara was a touch sad to see him go. It had been lovely to see him, but the bronze had other things to do. She wondered what the orange had meant, but wished Heart all the best in his search either way.

The hatching of greens and movements or smaller eggs didn't mean a great deal to Telleara. As Heart returned to the clutch however she was intrigued. Something worth distracting the bronze from his search? Ah, of course it was Sun's Ray. It was good that Heart was loyal, a fine quality, and she was sure Sun's Ray would appreciate it. The egg had been lovely to visit. Perhaps she hadn't felt the same kindred attachment to them as Heart, but they were still lovely. From what she heard Gold only came from the biggest egg, so Telleara hadn't bothered to hope in the direction of Sun's Ray at all. She imagined they would be a brown or bronze. An equally handsome brother for Heart perhaps?

It seemed that a little encouragement from Heart was all that Sun's Ray had needed; a pale shining nose pushed its way delicately free of the shell and a moment later two equally pale forefeet pushed their way out. From there the rest of the structure collapsed, leaving a slender shining dragonet blinking in the light of the cavern.

"What?" V' leaned forward in her seat and stared at the newly shelled hatchling in disbelief. That- that was- Lith you've clutched a gold! What did you have to do that for? Right, right Pern needed more dragons as fast as possible so this was a 'good thing', a good thing for whoever Impressed it and for bronzeriders! She didn't believe for a minute that the still fairly new power structure would hold up - s**t though it was it was better than golds running everything. Shards, now what was she supposed to-

Enough! Shards, V', are you stupid?

"Am I what?" V' said aloud, her brow furrowing in confusion at her dragon's annoyance and confusion. What are you on about?

He's obviously a bronze, why would you think he's a gold?

Not a gold? But! V' gestured at the hatchling. How is that not a gold?

He may look a little different to what you expected but I know my hatchlings, Lithustoth replied sharply, her voice sparking a moment of pain in her rider's mind. You have seen unusual hatchlings from me before yes? And if he had been a gold I would have welcomed him anyway. He is my hatchling, and I am proud.

"Right, right," V' muttered as she subsided back into her seat, still a bit confused but mostly just relieved. "Oh," she turned to her companions, gestured at the Sun's Ray bronze and added; "A bronze, if you were wondering. Tch, I bet some of the candidates down there've got their pants in a twist though." And she definitely hadn't done that herself, not at all.
