__ The overwhelming consensus so far from Hachiro and Tsukiko seemed to indicate that the squad wanted to push forward into Seizan. Kenshin agreed with that point, there was no use in being sitting ducks. Ada seemed to agree as well once she gave her orders. "Affirmative." He responded as he continued to focus on their surroundings with his byakugan. Kosei watched as iron sand swirled around them and cleared away the fog while simultaneously protecting them. He started walking behind Ada and physically readied himself to use the gentle fist in case of an ambush. He glanced over at Selina and saw her knocked arrow and anxiety. Kenshin gave her a look of stern confidence in an effort to put her at ease. He walked along the main road until he would eventually reach the outskirts of Seizan with the others.
His team lead's technique began to take effect, creating a pocket of visibility even for those not blessed with a dojutsu. Hachiro grinned as he saught the oncoming challenge. He was had a lust for battle that needed satiated. Ada warned them of the possibilities as they moved into the outskirts of the village, seeking out anyone who may be left. His gaze shifted to Selena, arrow knocked and her face full of tension. Kenshin's own expression seemed to be aimed at comforting the girl, Hachiro nodded, as to add his own reassurance. His ability to sense hostile intent still
As the team neared the city, the truth of what conspired began to unwind. The two buildings on either side of the main road were exploded outwards, parts of their facade now lay strewn into the street. Mixed into the rubble were the remains of a couple of unfortunate citizens. The farther into the city they ventured the more they would uncover. Dead strewn all through the streets, bodies hanging out of windows.... If the bodies were inspected, the causes of their deaths, aside from those who were crushed or perforated by shrapnel, was senbon and kunai wounds. No throats were cut, no executions. The restaurant to the right of the main road, was something straight out of a horror scene. All over the walls was evidence of shrapnel and death. Bodies dismembered and disemboweled by the pieces of metal which now decorated the walls. All through the air the overwhelming sickeningly sweet smell of blood dominated all others......
__ The further they walked, the nearer they got to Seizan and the more she spread her spinning metal barrier out. The thinning sand storm had scattered most of the nearby fog by the time they arrived at the first actual bit of civilization. Ada's team didn't much need a Byakugan to see the horrific scene painted so sadistically before them. Ruin and death was noticeable in any given direction you might glance. Ada paused her march signalling with her hand for her team to stop as well. Her stomach churned and she did all that she could to still the trembling caused by the prickling feeling crawling on her flesh. It was an instinctual fear brought about specifically by disgust. Ada tried to keep as much of her composure as possible, because their formation would be lost before they might even have a chance if she didn't manage that much, "K-Kosei-san... what do you see...?" At this point she was leaning toward hoping that there was some kind- any kind of silver lining in this situation. The metal sand would retreat back toward the party, evenly spreading across the ground in their vicinity. Both bow and arrow fell from her grips as Selina fell to her knees. Her mouth was unhinged but no words left her. The only semblance she had to knowing any of this was real was the sensation of tears streaming down her face. There were dead people here. Hundreds of dead people. Their bodies littered the area. Her emotions were furthered influx by the wave of anxiety her teammates fell. She was hollowed from this ordeal. A scream came from her. Her tears became sobs as her hands went to cover her face. Her sobs were loud and ugly. So much death. So many people to grieve. She never knew these people, but they were people nonetheless. All of these lives taken. She was surprised she was still conscious. She stood there as time continued to move on. She did not continue, however. She was trapped in the moment of looking onto this carnage.
__ The moment Kenshin set foot in Seizan's outskirts it all came into his view. His nose was overwhelmed by the metallic smell of blood. The scent was so intense that his stomach began to churn as his face went pale. Reluctantly he used his byakugan to see as much as he could in the area. He saw hundreds of slaughtered dead from senbon, shrapnel, and explosions. His disgust turned to ashes in his mouth which lit the fire of rage in his sickened belly. "What an injustice." The number of innocent lives lost was so incongruent that it was difficult for him to even comprehend. The Hyuuga winced as he used his Byakugan to see as much as possible as the smell of the blood added to the brutality of what remained of Seizan. Ada asked him what he saw and he strained himself to formulate a response. Selina had already collapsed into tears which caused melancholy to fall on his shoulders. "Tch. T-those bastards." The hatred in his voiced seeped out venomously. Emotion began to well up in his throat as adrenaline spiked on his nerves. "The buildings were destroyed by explosions. The corpses were lacerated by shrapnel or crushed and some were hit by kunai and senbon. This was an attack from people with access to explosives and ninja tools. There are hundreds more dead ahead of us." The image of the hundreds of dead strewn about in the streets and hanging from the windows would haunt him for the rest of his days. The faces of the men,women, and children lost in this attack were all he could see as his mind tortured him.
Tsukiko smelled it before she saw it. The absolute destruction of a town. She coughed, choked, and gagged in just a handful of seconds as the smell of death assaulted her. She covered her mouth and pinched her nose to help with the assault on her sense, but she found that taking gasps of air through her mouth just made her want to vomit more. She was locked up and bent over trying to find a way to stop the assault. She wished in that moment that she wasn't influenced by her partner's keen senses, that she wasn't a shinobi, that she wasn't alive and aware that such carnage could ever exist.
Her shoulders shook with the first dry sob, but her partner's distressed mewl distracted her before she could completely lose herself in her own sorrows. She turned to Chi, who was rubbing at her nose and clearly upset with her own sensory overload at the reveal. She fell to her knees and held her cheetah partner. "This must be so much worse for you, I'm so sorry," she mumbled into Chi's fur. Finding comfort in her partner, Tsukiko took a few heartbeats to try and find a center.
When she was ready, she got back to her feet and stared at the ground, doing her best not to look at the bodies again. "C-could this be a genjutsu, by any chance?" It couldn't be real; no one on this planet was sick enough to terrorize an entire town like this. It didn't make any sense.
Hachiro would smell the blood on the air as it gave Seizan a metallic tasting air due to its potent blood saturated earth. Hachiro's eyes darted left to right, examining the corpses as he brought his arm up to his face as he neared a body to shield his nose from the foul odor of corpses rotting in the midday heat. As he examined the corpses, he took note of the patterns of damage. All the entry wounds were at their back, the exit wounds at their fronts. The patterns indicated shrapnel, all the corpses had small pieces of it lodged inside them. " Cowardly..." Hachiro murmured as he stood, moving towards the center of the town to examine more bodies for evidence. It appeared to be a mass bombing of the town.
As he pushed nearer the town a body laid at the center of the road ahead. He approached the body as it laid face down. It was a young female. Her body size indicated she was not much older than seven or eight. As he went to turn the body over to examine the wounds on the back, the entry wounds again he thought to himself. ' This girl cant be much older than...' his thoughts went blank as his mouth quivered. Both of his hands slammed into the ground as he dry heaved several times as tears welled in his steel grey eyes. " E....Emiko." He spat between heaves after observing the family's crest around her neck. As a wail escaped his throat. The cry was reminiscent to that of a wolf morning the loss of its own. His hands that scraped at the dirt before him clenched tighter as he began to beat his clenched fists on the earth over and over, breaking chunks of dirt loose, creating a small indent in the ground. " Huraaaaaaaaaa" He roared in pain as he grieved his sister's loss. This was his fault. He had abandoned his home in Getsugakure in order to escape his fate. Had he stayed she wouldn't have left. Wouldn't have gone looking for him.
He paused, ceasing to beat the ground for the sins of the enemy as he wept. His hands slowly made their way to scoop the limp body of his dearest sister into his arms. He moved slowly, trudging towards a house that was otherwise unscathed besides debris from shrapnel. Gently he laid his sister's body upon the oak framed surface of the home's front walk, removing his jacket and laying it upon her small frame. Tears spilled over the jacket as he moved his hand to her eyes. He had to close them, had to stop her from glaring eternally with regret into his own. A slide of hand would close the portals to her soul that no longer held value here. " I promise...I'll give you a proper burial Emiko." His finger tips met his lips, passing a kiss to his sisters forehead through touch, pulling the jacket over her face.
Moving closer to the group, it was plain to see his mental state was no where near stable. His twitching eyebrow that was furrowed to the extent that he looked like a demon more than man matched by his scowl. Steel eyes staring intently upon the group. With a booming voice that commanded fear and gave insight to his pain he roared again. " I'm killing every last one of the bastards that did this. Anyone who gets in my way will die too!" With that, he unsheathed his blade in a rage imbued moment and continued to press forward towards the town square alone, determined to murder every last responsible person who remained in the area.
__ This overwhelming situation continued to unsurprisingly surprise Ada. With Kenshin's confirmation she only frowned more and restrained a sarcastic thought to herself, 'Isn't that just great? Things are actually as bleak as they seem, and I have a feeling that it is only going to get worse the-' She couldn't even finish her thought before turning her attention to Selina's scream and apparent mental breakdown. The other kunoichi and her cheetah weren't faring much better. In the confusion she lost track of Hachiro too, only for him to reappear vowing to see those responsible for this massacre. Tsukiko's suggestion that it could be a genjutsu struck her when it had been said, but that wouldn't easily deceive Kenshin's eyes. She was short on time and options regarding how to proceed so she would just follow her training to trust her gut. "Selena! I need you to go back to the village as fast as you can. Inform the Raikage directly about this. The Chief can wait." Her eyes then shifted to the cheetah tamer, "Either escort her or help Kosei-san and I here. We're going to make sure Hirohiko-san doesn't get himself killed while investigating further around the village. I doubt it will get any easier from here on." Normally she wouldn't give options when it came to orders, but clearly she had walked her team into the belly of the beast.
Going by Kosei's ability to also stay marginally composed, she doubted he was interested in retreating. Selena's given order provided Ada's team with a chance to receive reinforcements as well as to get her distraught partner out of harm's way. More than the others, she needed Kosei right now for this mission anyway. He hadn't reported any enemies in the vicinity even with the fog almost completely cleared at least for quite a ways away from their position. That likely meant that those responsible weren't nearby, or they had actually managed to conceal themselves from the legendary Byakugan. Right now she needed to reign Hachiro back in, even if that meant doing so aggressively. She wouldn't stand for those sorts of antics in a team she as in charge of. That rash behavior would get someone killed for sure. Ada knew that he was a little wild when it came to combat tension based on the other mission they did together, but even this seemed extraordinary. "Hachiro!" Ada called after him as the metal dust she had spread about the ground would swirl up into the air.
She began to march after the emotionally wayward swordsman, certain about what needed to be done. "Follow my orders and I swear that we will bring justice to those at fault here, together." The metal sand quickly flowed to encircle Hachiro, severely restricting his options to proceed on his personal warpath. "Do not make enemies of your comrades over a grudge!" If he resisted then she would take away from his ability to fight confidently. Insubordination was absolutely intolerable in this already chaotic scene. They were a team, and with the same goal still in mind. "Will you comply...?" It was so very hard to keep her voice from cracking or words from stuttering. This was so much to handle, and everything was venturing further and further into worst-case-scenario territory. More iron sand leaked from various other seals on her armor. Selina continued to sob. The smell now finally hit her. She never smelled blood in such large quantities. It smelled unnatural to her. This entire thing felt unnatural to her. Just hours ago she was home enjoying her shows. Was that the fake world? Was this the real one? Reality shifted to her like an ocean during the storm. It was then that she heard Ada say something, but the words were not there.They were distorted, like Selina was at the bottom of the sea hearing someone call out to her. In the end, she couldn't make out what her friend said. She didn't even know if she cared to either. All that she felt was the overwhelming sorrow of the area around her. She was broken at this moment.
__ Kenshin continued his survey of the area in further detail with his byakugan. With much of the fog cleared away by Ada's iron sand his vision was much clearer. His stomach continued to churn as he examined all of the bodies trying to find clues. His surveying weighed heavily on his soul, but he had to fight through the pain desperately to fulfill his duty. He immediately stopped when he noticed one body wearing...unusual clothing. In his hand, he held a curved blade with a design that was completely foreign to him. "Why would a civilian of Seizan be carrying such a weapon in the middle of this trading town?" Kenshin's head was still being slammed by the sensation of standing in the middle of a mass murder site so he was even starting to second guess if this detail even mattered. Then, he looked far up the main road and saw a massive number of people walking. "Are those the perpetrators?" Kosei wondered as he analyzed them and they appeared to be vastly stronger than himself and anybody else in his team. Fear struck him because if they could cause this much carnage and still be able to outmatch five Kumogakure shinobi then this was far from an ideal scenario.
Before he could speak up with additional intel he noticed Hachiro yelling,sobbing, and generally grieving the corpse of a young girl. Her face had haunted him as well but did not elicit this level of a reaction within himself. "He must've known her, but how is that possible? Is he from Seizan?" Kenshin became temporarily confused but dismissed it as it was a detail of miniscule importance to the mission itself. He then heard within earshot Ada's orders. Certainly, the collapsed and screaming Selina needed to go and perhaps Tsukiko could help her. Their numbers were dwindling far too early in the mission and the stress was becoming overwhelming for him. The trauma was understandable, he felt it as well as anybody. Kenshin was born in a prison and grew up abused, but even this was beyond the scope of his own suffering. This was mass murder, a crime most heinous. Justice needed to be done for the people of Seizan.
The chief bequeathed Ada with command over this squad and with second in command to himself. As a result, he would follow her every order and guard her authority as well as his own. Hachiro approached her with red eyes irritated from crying, a twitchy eyebrow, and an obstinate demeanor. The adrenaline of watching Ada restrict his movement by encircling him in the iron sand and forcing him to spring into action allowed him to temporarily forget the environment making him distraught and ill. He swiftly moved around Hachiro and the iron sand and stood in front of him in the gentle fist stance. Kosei remembered how violent and bloodthirsty Hachiro was on their recent mission. He restrained none and took absolutely no prisoners as rage poured out of him. "This man is rebellious, dangerous." Kenshin thought as he prepared himself to use his abilities to restrain his comrade if need be. Ada seemed to prepare herself for more combat by unsealing more of the metal dust. Kenshin now stood in front of Hachiro standing between him and the main road forward.
"You're acting against your orders. I will not tolerate mutiny." His byakugan focused intensely on him as his voice roared with conviction and yet stayed reasonable in volume. He would now speak on his intel by focusing on Ada. "There's a man among the bodies and he has what looks like a sickle blade in his grip and he's wearing unusual clothing. I have also finally detected a mass movement of people far up on the main road. I can tell by their chakra that they're drastically more powerful than us." He looked back to Hachiro and spoke once more. "You're forbidden to engage them alone. If you do they'll kill you and if you try I'll restrain you." He then returned his focus to Ada before continuing. "With that said we need to shadow them quietly. Quieter than yelling and sobbing loudly." His words were mainly directed at Hachiro and Selina in this instance, but he decided to let it go for the sake of progression. He noticed that now Selina was completely unresponsive. He continued to stand firmly in Hachiro's way while continuing to look behind himself in case the people far ahead were alerted of their presence.
Hachiro's outburst had Tsukiko nearly jumping out of her skin. Her eyes were saucers as she looked around for her previous KPD partner, though her gaze landed on Ada, who was instructing each of them. Escort Selina or calm Hachiro were her choices. She looked over to Selina -- but the girl didn't seem to be making any moves to return to the Raikage.
"I'll stay, just let me get Selina on her way. She can take Chi to help keep her paced." What Tsukiko didn't mention was she also wanted to Chi to go so that Selina would have some sort of anchor to sanity. People (and animals) that suffered trauma together could make each other stronger in the face or aftermath of it. Tsukiko nodded to Ada, who turned her attention to freezing up Hachiro, then went over to the fallen archer.
Tsukiko gently put a hand on her shoulder. She softened her eyes and her voice like her mother used to do when she was barely able to walk. "Selina, darling, we need you." She brushed a strand of the other girl's hair out of her face as she searched her expression for any signs of a mental break. "We'll stay here and fix this where we can. These people deserve closure, and we are the only ones who can give it to them. We need you to tell the Raikage about this situation because it is quickly spiralling. Please."
She paused for a moment, rethought her approach. "My partner here, Chi, she isn't used to this. She needs to get out of here, but she'll get too distracted if she heads back alone, and I need her to land in Kumogakure safely. Can you please take my partner back to Kumogakure, and give the Raikage a mission update for us?" A smaller task, one of escorting a cheetah, would be an easier pill to swallow than the obviously-daunting thoughts of telling the Raikage about this kind of bloodshed. Compartimentalizing this would be a temporary solution, a band-aid. But it was all she had to try and ensure Selina could make it to Kumogakure.
Hachiro's steel grey eyes widened as his iris's appeared more like pinpoints as his glare shifted sharply back to the woman as iron sand began to encroach him. As the iron sand appeared around him it would almost seem as if he had let himself be wrapped in it as his image remained. The after image was effective at giving him the drop on an opponent, who this time, had chosen to be so. In a blur the young Hirohiko would appear just outside of the woman's sand with his blade drawn, his sidestepping technique would have proved effective. At the same moment he had slashed at the air behind him. During that swing chakra swirled around his blade and was sent out in a five foot wide arc of sharpened chakra that would be aimed at the ground just before Ada. Hachiro would continue forward with his blade readied as he neared the center of town. "I said I'd kill you. Back off!"
His gaze met with Kenshin's own as he took a stance to ready himself. His words echoed in the streets as he barked about mutiny, same as Ada. Did they not care?! " To hell with orders, to hell with all of you. They didn't kill your baby sister! Move!" Hachiro's eyes waivered as his final plea for peace was given. Yes, Hachiro was merciless to his foe. But these were allies, not foes. He had no desire to turn them into targets but for his sister's sake, he would do it. "Kosei....Let me have justice for my sister, for Emiko. It doesn't matter how strong they are, I'll slay them all! " His grip on his sword was now in both hands as he lowered the tip in hopes his ally would step aside but still readied to attack or defend.
__ Ada gave a nod of approval back to Tsukiko's choice on the matter. Although, now she was more inclined to just suggest that she, the cheetah and Selena all go back. Considering what Kenshin reported about the enemy forces soon after, she would feel more confident knowing the message arrived to the Raikage without any possible delay. Ada worried for Selena's current state, but she also had to make sure everyone else in the team at least survived this mission. Then... there was Hachiro to still deal with. He certainly did not comply. Ada did pause upon hearing the root cause of his outburst of aggression, but now more than ever she was doubting his abilities not only as a shinobi but also as a warrior in general. Everything he was intent on doing and everything he had said just recently went against everything she was trained to know. Now, it was her duty as the squad leader to educate him as well. This would be his final chance, but not without preemptive consequence.
Her hands casually fell into a ram hand seal while he focused his attention on Kenshin for such a futile plea. "Naive." She muttered as a strong magnetic force was set directly upon Hachiro. If unavoided his sword would crumble into dust as well as the other metallic weaponry in on his person. "You are naive, Hachiro. What kind of victory do you think you can achieve with that empty bravado?" Her hands departed each other again and the metal dust throughout the area under her magnetic chakra's control would slowly flow like a gentle lustrous sandstorm. "Did you not just hear what Kosei-san said? We are outnumbered and lack the strength to do more than barely dent this unknown enemy's force... if we're lucky." Ada took a deep breath to calm herself, reminding herself of how unnecessary emotions were during missions with this display from her subordinate. "Your sister would most likely not want you to throw your life away needlessly. If you're going to avenge her then help us by actually behaving like a shinobi by gathering information on our enemies so that we all, as comrades, can bring justice upon them." It was so basic, and yet somehow she was somewhat bewildered by how easily one's rage and fear could cause them to lose sight of their purpose and reason. This was the worst time for one to deny the limits of their own abilities. Not many people in the world could take on an actual army of ninja by theirself, and not a single one of them here were that breed of legendary.
Ada took another look around the village, setting her sights on Hachiro's jacket laid over the small corpse next to a building. "This is an act of war against our nation. Whoever these people are, we will face them as a nation. That is the correct way to handle this. No ifs, ands, or buts about it." Ada would look back to Hachiro once more. A new sword would form in her hand densely forged through the most intense magnetic forces she could muster. She turned the blade over, offering its handle to the swordsman. "Let's do this right, so no others have to suffer what you feel now." Ada did not know empathy for him, but she did at least sympathize, in her own way. This was Hachiro's last chance though. Otherwise she would have him incapacitated and delivered to Kumogakure as less a warrior than she knew he actually was.
