"It is clear to me that there is some kind of underhanded plot happening here. I think it would be best for us to play this game together, Lora." Flydra scooped up her gerbils from the battle against the instructor and plopped them down on a desk with the seadwellers. Fighting the highblood herself was the only way to be sure Lorata was getting a fair game. Flydra didn't trust any of the other trolls in the classroom not to cheat.
Not that the sirens had anything against cheating, except well, when it was against them.
"Attack, gerbils, and be quick." She announced, taking the time they spent rolling around like blobs to set up a makeshift wall surrounding them by using notebooks and binders. It would topple over if they bounced off it hard enough but... whatever. She just didn't want gerbil poops spilling off the desk and into their purses or something.

"Of course!" Lorata scooped up her own gerbils, gave her instructor one last look, and then turned her back on him to play with Flydra. "If we play together, they can't sabotage us!" And with the little notebooks and things Flydra was setting up, the gerbils weren't likely to be able to see any signals the instructors might try to send. She was so smart! The seadweller dropped her gerbils into their new playing field and urged them on with a to the point "Attack!"
As one of her gerbils wandered its way into one of Flydra's, scoring a point, she beamed at the tealblood.

Yes, this was better. Lorata was starting to shine again at the sight of a little success. Flydra did not mind losing a point at all if it was to boost the morale of her darling leader. The tealblood was here to learn the same skills but on a lower scale. She would not be leading armies into battle someday but rather... soldiers and doctors around the back lines. Lorata would still, and always, be her commander.
"That was excellent." She remarked, even though she wasn't sure how Lorata had done it. Encouraging gerbils was hard. Flydra herself would be happy to never get within five feet of them again after this way over. They were no longer cute wiggling animals but shameful reminders of how unfair and cruel the world was.
"Go go, gerbils." She cooed, a mixture of calmness and coldness in her voice.

It had only been two rounds since they had given up playing against those cheating instructors, and already Lorata could see a huge difference in the quality of her gerbil's tactics. If she had needed any further proof of their misdeeds, this would have been it for sure. She nodded with a pleased little laugh. "I think they're starting to understand what I want them to do, now that they're distanced from other influences." Another scored point seemed to underline her conclusion. Yes, this was much better. |

"You're doing so wonderful, Lora. I knew if anyone could do it..." It'd be you. The end of the sentence was clear. Flydra was not doing so well in this fight but that did not bother her. Success and failure were not necessarily the only measurements of good leadership. Minimizing losses and handling resources was important too. She sprinkled some crumbs into the makeshift arena to feed both teams of gerbils to perk them up for the next round.
"Alright, let's try it again. You're doing great."

Lorata's smile warmed even further as she basked in Flydra's compliments. The thought kept hitting her again and again how happy she was that the tealblood had come with her to this class. She could have faced the instructors alone, of course, but leadership surely went hand in hand with teamwork. It was good to have someone who would always have her back.
Feeling especially generous, she reached down to pet one of her gerbils as Flydra sprinkled food. "Just keep it up, alright, little gerbil?" |

"No, that's not quite right." Flydra pouted as her gerbils flailed around helplessly. They were trying hard but it wasn't enough. She wondered if there was some sort of strategy to help inferior warriors take out stronger ones. There had to be. But communicating that to these small little critters would be impossible. In the real world, her solution would be to upgrade them with her chemicals and prosthetics. Still, it warmed her biscuit to see Lorata shining so brightly. She was definitely born to be in charge.
"Try taking the rear, gerbils." The tealblood leaned down to whisper to her team but it wasn't likely to produce great results.

"That was a good idea," Lorata said brightly. It seemed she'd managed to overhear Flydra's whispered orders to her gerbils. But it also seemed likely she hadn't been the only one. As Flydra's gerbils flailed around, for a moment Lorata's apparently mimicked them. The result was just a lot of rolling around and no point scoring on either side. It was silly to watch though, and she didn't mind so much since she was already winning."Maybe too good, hm?" |

Flydra's cheeks burned a slight teal from shame. Lorata was doing so well! The doctor's gerbils weren't doing hardly anything and she couldn't help but feel like she was letting down her squad. She needed to be able to keep up with the rest of them beyond just putting bandaids on their scratches. She clutched the side of the table, watching the gerbils squeak and n** at each other while trying to hide how flustered and embarrassed she was. She had tried to reassure herself that a loss didn't mean she wasn't cut out for this but the doubt still managed to creep in.
"I-it's not over yet." She had thought she'd get at least two points before losing!

"That's right!" Lorata considered Flydra's expression before she nodded, glancing back over her soldiers. They had really gotten the hang of their roles now that they were in a fair fight, but their opponents were clearly floundering. "We can't let our guards down now, gerbils. Your enemy held their own in their last fight even though the instructor had an unfair advantage!" She glanced back up at Flydra. "If anyone could come back for a win from this point, it's them!" |

There was a shared glance and then the seadweller began to lay on the encouragement. Flydra's biscuit trembled before doing a little flip. Lorata truly was going to be an amazing leader someday. She bit her lip and tried to keep a calm collected expression on her face but it was incredibly difficult. The gerbils continued to roll around, sniffing at the outer barriers created by the notebooks and binders. It was a moment of intense emotion for Flydra, surrounded by weird comical gerbil noises.
"... thank you." The tealblood murmured, quietly reaching to rest her hand on top of Lorata's and lacing her fingers through it. She felt much better already.

"You are too good to me, Lora." Flydra smiled, incredibly happy despite the complete failure of her gerbils waddling around on the desk. She didn't even care if she lost at this point. The tealblood had gotten what she wanted, battle experience and emotional intimacy with one of her closest friends. Perhaps it was a good example of losing the battle but winning the war. Sometimes it was okay to lose. Sometimes it was better to.
Especially if it would make Lorata look good.
"Finish this." She said to her gerbils but mostly to Lorata. Hopefully things would be easier after this portion of the class.
