"I'm fine, I'm fine." Oliver assured Eli with a wave of his hand, and then notably flinched when Horace's hand suddenly reached out to ruffle his hair. It only took him about half a second to recover though. "Watch it!"

Not that he seemed that mad.

"I think working ourselves up to the stone is a good idea." He watched Horace's attempt as it... fizzled out. "It's a start? Here." He tore off another piece of paper and popped it into the box, but when he started to cast he stopped short with a wince.

"Sorry, maybe I need another second." He sighed irritably as he rubbed his temple.

Players must roll 1d4 in each post where they test their method of casting. There are three testing stages; you must achieve two successes in each stage to prove your method works for the casting. Each post must be filled out before your method test can be turned in.

Stage One: Concept
In this stage your characters are working with a smaller version of their method to a smaller purpose, such as heating a pot of water or causing someone to float.
1-- A success! Your casting method has proven viable in this small test.
2-- A failure. You did not generate enough power to achieve your test goal.
3-- A failure. Your chosen reagent was not sturdy enough to channel the power and was destroyed.
4-- A failure. There was a large flaw in your casting that prevented you from succeeding.

Stage Two: Prototype
In this stage, your characters are attempting to cast a moderate spell using your method of casting; a moderate spell is something like causing a flower to grow quickly or healing a minor wound.
1-- A failure. Your casting method did not generate enough power; you must adjust your reagents.
2-- A success! Your casting method has proven viable in this larger test.
3-- A failure. Your chosen focal point was not sturdy enough to channel your power and was destroyed, causing you minimal harm.
4-- A failure. There was a small flaw in your casting which must be adjusted before you can succeed.

Stage Three: Final
In this stage, your characters are attempting to cast a large spell using your method of casting. A large spell is something like weather manipulation, teleportation, etc.
1-- A failure. You didn't generate enough power; the flaw was not with your spell.
2-- A failure. Your chosen focal point wasn't sturdy enough to channel your power and was destroyed, causing you moderate harm.
3-- A failure. You blew up your reagents on accident, and must acquire more.
4-- A success! You're ready to use this method of casting in the recreation of the Charter.

"If you need a break, take one though, alright?" It was all Eli would ask of Ollie. To be fair, he asked it of Horace, too. All of them would likely need to pace themselves if they wanted to see this one through. Reaching out, he gave the gentlest of tugs on Horace's long, sleek hair. Nothing even remotely painful, just a playful response to the ruffle.

"It's just practice, we'll get this down." He tried not to mother hen Ollie and instead turned to make his own attempt at the paper. Like Horace before him, it wasn't quite what they wanted. Instead of catching fire, it burst into a thousand tiny scraps. "Ah..."

Horace frowned at the flinch. Olliebee? But then they were both trying to cast and it... just wasn't working properly. His eyes were intent, as if he could discern what was going wrong - he couldn't. Still, he selected another piece of paper and dropped it into the box. He closed the lid and set both his hands on it, thinking of vibrations and songs and voice worked in harmony. About how a dissonant tone could shatter everything.

When he opened the box, the piece of paper was gone. "Holy s**t... uh, uh, Ollie did you feel what I did? I don't know what I did!"

Sorry, habit. He wilted without meaning to, mostly because he really had liked the touch and he hadn't meant to react like he did. Personal stuff. He left it at that because they were in the middle of something important.

Out of the three of them, Oliver was able to tell the paper was gone before Horace even opened up the box, his eyes wide. "No—I mean yes, yes I did? It was like..."

He placed another paper in there and held his hands out. "Your magic was just so, it was like..." His brow furrowed as the box hummed with heat, "I felt it... clash with the paper, and then—"

He opened the box again, marveling when it was empty.

There was something to be said about observation. They'd all failed once, but it had given them the opportunity to learn not only from their own mistakes, but from the mistakes of others. Now that Horace and Ollie had succeeded, it felt only natural that Eli do so next. If he didn't, well... that was a bridge of disappointment he'd cross when he got to it.

Not that he expected each and every cast to go perfectly, but still.

"Good job, you two," he said, eyeballing the inside of the box. It really did appear like nothing remained, no ash, no scraps, not even a particle of paper. This was just what they'd wanted. "Now something organic..."

Oh, look, the same basket of apples on their kitchen counter was there. Convenient, even if something looked decidedly off about the apples themselves. They were almost too shiny, their surfaces like dark red oil slicks. At least they felt normal when he picked one up. It went in the box just like the paper had.

"Okay, let me give this a try." Then he went quiet for a moment, his hands held out on either side of their soundproof box. His eyes never left it, his gaze hard and intent, and eventually the room was filled with the melodic sound of a humming that grew louder and louder every second. It was like he didn't even notice he was doing it.

Then, like the flip of a switch, the humming stopped. Eli blinked and his eyes felt dry. The inside of the box was empty.

You know I've got... habits, too. No judgement; I'll be more careful next time, okay? But then he watched first Ollie, then Ellie with eyes wide open, straining as it he could absorb their way of casting magic through osmosis. It was working, it was working... more or less.

"Elliot, help me, show me how." He plopped another apple in and grabbed one of Eli's hand and interlocked their fingers. Horace was either having a very good day, or just so concentrated on magic he couldn't think of anything else - he had yet to shock anyone. He hummed too, a low tone, steadying himself. He just have to shift his tone, his magic, just enough.....

Oliver watched as the two of them decimated the apples without much thought, his brain absorbing what magical information that he could. Their magic was so tangible to him; he could feel it harmonizing with each other like a chorus. The hardest part to him was finding the base point of the object in question, but the hum seemed to adjust and adjust and adjust...

    Until it worked.

We can talk about it later, if you really want. He was looking over their handiwork with his finger tapping against his chin. "So that just leaves the rock, correct?" He dunked it in the box without much ado. "We should probably all cast at the same time, but let me see if I can find the focal point first..." His hands were held out again, his mind focusing, his guard low...

Something whiplashed back against his head, but it wasn't physical. The corners of his vision looked messy like static for a moment before they squeezed shut. He didn't make any sounds, but he didn't have to. His expression was speaking for him... as was the eventual cough followed by his hands covering the front of his face and oh god he could feel fluid in his nose.

"I-I'm fine," He wheezed, "I'm fine, don't get distracted, you were doing good."

Caught a little off guard, maybe, but Eli didn't seem to mind the sudden hand holding, interlocked fingers or no. In fact, he gave a squeeze, a recognition, a comfort. Of course he'd help. He was proud he'd even been able to do it by himself in the first place.

His own humming was quieter than Horace's, background noise in comparison, just a boost for what he was trying to do. After some time it worked and damn, they were doing pretty good, after all. With a contented sigh, he took a step back, but didn't move to let go of his hand.

"Just the rock, yes." Though it didn't look like Ollie would have the same success. Whatever the stone's properties were, it seemed like it would be a hard nut to crack. "Are you sure..." he huffed, sounding genuinely concerned and looking like he wanted to run over and hold him, hug him, double check that he really was okay. Instead he tried to stay focused, but only at Ollie's request. It was hard.

In fact, it was so hard that when he tried to cast—separately, or maybe with a touch of help from Horace, so Ollie could rest for a second—he got hit with the same wave of feedback.

"s**t. Okay... okay, this isn't working. I think we... we need to jump straight to the whole casting at the same time thing."

Horace tried to help Elliot, but his thought were pulled in five directions and it showed. Something sparked angrily inside the box, but it didn't work. And it didn't work because they were both hurt.

He yanked his hands from the box. "Ollie, here - Eli, too." He handed them tissues. "Tip your heads back, okay. Please don't strain so. Or do we need to stop?" Worry rang in his voice.

"Fine, fine..." But his nose was definitely gushing outwardly now, the blood running down over his lips despite his best efforts. Then Elliot was bleeding too and Horace was flipping out and there was no way they were going to get anywhere like this.

    ...

Cut forward a little later, and Oliver was now sitting there with a tissue stuffed up his nose. "Okay," He sounded congested as a result, his eyes slightly narrowed as his forehead pulsed with pain. "Let's... try that again."

At the very least, the box seemed to be containing their magic, even if the stone inside continued to remain intact. Maybe there really just wasn't a way...? Oh, but he couldn't think like that, not when it came to magic...

So they were all holding hands now, Eli made sure of it, because it felt like it helped when he and Horace had cast together the first time. This way they could channel their energy in a circle, empower it, direct it at the box. It was like their sigil, so it made sense to him.

Unfortunately, it didn't seem to work. The time between attempt and backlash was longer, at least, letting him build up the strength of his own humming quite a bit. Maybe that was what saved them from getting hit with a wave as strong as the first couple times.

"My ******** head," he complained, "At least there's no nosebleed this time."

Horace moved his thumbs to stroke both of their wrists. Unfortunately, something wasn't right; he wasn't... harmonizing right or hitting the right level of dissonance. This rock was so much harder than the apple or the paper had been. But if they couldn't do this, could they save Melany?

"Ollie, does the... the stone feel like anything, magically?"

Oliver frowned, "It... has a property to it, but it's really hard to parse." He sighed, "I think my head is still frazzled from before. I'll try to focus again..." He held his hands out, "It's definitely there, but I feel like... with the paper and the apples, we had much more leeway. This is so much more precise..."

"At least we know the box will hold." He laughed dryly.

"To be honest, I'm happy the box is doing as well as it is." If they could find the right frequency, the right level for their magic, he was sure they could do it. The paper and the apples were different, sure, but they'd been able to eliminate everything up to this point. They'd proven it was possible. Eli hated to give up and it wasn't like they had much room for quitting, anyway.

This try wasn't the right one either, but at least the feedback wasn't as painful.

Horace sighed and looked at the big metal thing. The symbol on it seemed stark, despite the dried blood smeared around it. "It's because we bled on it," he intoned helpfully. Then, kind of impulsively, he lifted first Elliot's hand, then Oliver's pressing a kiss to the back of each one.

"F-for good luck," he said, looking embarrassed. Horace made a weird half=coughing noise and tried to concentrate.
