It was, perhaps, a good thing that Jeremiah cannot read thoughts. Or not, as the case was for this moment.

What matters was that very slowly, very obviously, he reached out and presses just the tips of his fingers against their shoulder. It was a simple comfort.

"I can make you a drink to help with that when we get to the house," he replies, "and we can talk more later." Unspoken that they will because Alexis needs to talk and someone needs to listen and it might as well be someone who is more likely to be impartial and not judge.

Also unspoken that they don't need to speak right now if they don't feel up to it.

"Worst case scenario for you tonight is that you end up covered in flower cat."

They hardly reacted to Jeremiah's touch, but their shoulders slumped, some of the tension let out from his offer of comfort. All Alexis gave in response was a grumble of assent at the mention of cats, their voice pitching, and laid their head on the windowsill - knees still pulled up to their chest, fingers tangled up tight in loose threads - and let their eyes fall closed, letting the hum of the road let them gently drift until the car would stop again.

Jeremiah took his hand back once Alexis slumped (and when he needed to have both hands on the steering wheel to drive). It was not a long drive, not at all, and soon enough they were at the Mercer home. (The garden looked far better, the wrap around veranda no longer a jungle and instead just their swinging bench seat and the cat corner nook.)

It would be a quiet enough night, Alexis taken inside while Jeremiah spoke with Algie and made texts and phonecalls.

... never mind that it was true. Alexis would spend the night the focus of a small, white flowery othercat.
