Ashdown Fire Department.

    Open all hours.

Located near Town Hall and the Police Department, this is Ashdown's largest fire station. It's an impressive building with three garage bays, dormitory quarters upstairs for night shift personnel, a weight room, a lounge, and the main office. This is also the central hub for all Fire Department-related activity. The station's current mascot is Fidget, a 15-month-old Dalmatian who helps boost morale and aids the department's education initiatives by demonstrating fire safety tips like stop-drop-n-roll.

    Become a Firefighter
    - Must be between 19 and 32 at the time of the exam
    - Pass a written test for Fire Fighter administrated by the State
    - Pass a Physical Abilities test administrated by the State
    - Pass a character background investigation
    - Meet medical fitness requirements
    - Have a valid Massachusetts driver's license
    - Pass a drug test
    - Pass a psychological exam
    - Be a non-smoker

    For Completion of Probation
    - Complete all assignments of the academy
    - Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 certification
    - EMT certification

    Employees
Cam Rylan - Lt. and officer of Company 13 ("The Lucky 13")

    Volunteers welcome.

    ----

    Brewed Lobster
The designated fire department bar is the Brewed Lobster (lovingly nicknamed the Rude Lobster), a 15-minute walk from the fire station.

It's a microbrewery that makes a great IPA, and has a ton of other local beers on tap as well as a couple rotating specials of Midwest and West Coast beers. Their cocktails, when people actually order them, are also fantastic and the food is surprisingly classy and good (think $17 - $20 an entree). Mood lighting, spacious outdoor area, tends to draw a crowd that leans toward the yuppie side.

The department hosts a happy hour for all employed and volunteer firefighters on the first Friday of every month, reserving the entire back patio (or basement, in the winter months) and ordering copious amounts of appetizers. They also get a special order of desserts delivered from somewhere else in the city, because the running joke within the department is that the Brewed Lobster serves the worst cheesecake in the greater Boston area (they don't actually, but there was an incident a few years ago that gave birth to both the myth and the Rude Lobster nickname).

20% off for firefighters, because god knows they spend enough there.

Avant-Garde

              Art supply shop & studio.
              Open: Monday - Friday: 8 am - 9 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 10 am - 7 pm
              Closed on holidays.
Studio hours available by appointment only.
Select classes held once a month - subject varies. Check the poster board for more info.

Avant-Garde is located within the main square of Ashdown. Supplies a wide variety of artistic supplies ranging from oil paints, watercolors, and copics to other things such as clay, wax, beads, etc. Tools of the trade such as brushes, chisels, scrapers and more can also be purchased here. Special orders for larger items such as pottery wheels, kilns and the like can also be done at the check-out desk of the shop.

The shop also has three different studios on the premises:
  • a traditional media studio: tools are provided inside, though the artist is expected to provide their own paints, etc.
  • a pottery & modeling studio: a few pottery wheels & kilns can be located in here. Use caution when operating the kiln, as temperatures can get very hot.
  • a 3D art studio: metal, carpentry, and even stone & glass can be worked here. Familiarity with the tools of the trade is a must for this studio -- this is to prevent accidents from happening.

Please see the shop staff to book an appointment in any of these studios.

Appointments are made and priced by the hour.

Once a month, an art class of some kind is generally offered on premises. While the class itself is free, space is first-come, first-serve. Please keep an eye on the poster board just inside the door for details and sign-up times.

Employees

Hiring: 1-3 additional staff. Familiarity with art tools, preferred.

    strix sales & realty
Buying or Selling. Strix Sales always makes a deal.
There's something near spooky about the company logo, a round golden moon with a swooping owl silhouette, but it's seen all around town on park benches, bus stops, billboards and newspaper ads.

There's a square photo of a grinning bearded realtor with sharp amber eyes and an unbelievably white smile. It's hard to tell if he's charming or threatening but you see the real estate sales signs scattered around town, only in ashdown.

Owner & Sole Realtor: Ulmuka Narasimhan

the sweet spot

Once known as The Shake and Bake in the 80s, the storefront has been taken over and recently reopened after a series of unfortunate events left a widowed woman with too much money and time on her hands, and just enough of a sweet tooth to pursue it.

The Sweet Spot prides itself not only as a bakery, but also in its unique set of milkshakes and malts often made to accompany their pastries. There are several booths left from its run in the 80s as well as stools at the front counter for those who want to sit and enjoy their purchase.

In the back are the stairs which lead to the current owner's small apartment above the business. Some say she's still willing to let people sleep there if they're loyal customers and don't mind an absent-minded old woman being nosy about their life.

      open:
      monday - thursday, saturday & sunday: 7am ~ 11pm
      friday: 7am ~ 12am

      owner:
Mrs. Maria Potosi, a fifty-something year old widow who is small but strong-armed, usually helping bake in the back

      employees:
Dawson Grace - sometimes jokingly referred to as The Sugar Daddy
Quentin Talis - occasionally caught napping at the register
Harriet Vaughan - may or may not always be on a sugar high

      hiring:
Part time and full-time cashiers. On the job training available for full-time bakers. No previous experience necessary, but preferred.

marmalade sky

Your friendly local head shop/hippie hangout. Open 10-7 M-T, 9-8 Saturday, and closed Sundays--theoretically. Opening times and closing times are treated as somewhat malleable.

Say the word "bong" and you'll be kicked out of the premises. There's a big sign in the window that says NOT A VAPE SHOP, due to the current owner's short temper with the trend (which Marmalade Sky substantially predates).

Retails in the usual products for tobacco use only, plus the usual velvet blacklight Grateful Dead bear posters, beaded curtains, incense, Manic Panic hair dye, body jewelry, some local crafts, and a roped-off section in the back you'll need ID for that retails in a small selection of more adult offerings.

No smoking on the premises (go stand by the dumpster like everyone else, OK?), as there is an elderly cat whose health must be considered. Lucy lives in the window and is the third Lucy since the shop's inception.

current IC staff (the rest would be NPCs)
