Panic was taking over, as if a switch had been thrown, and she was now operating on autopilot. She saw his fist coming again ever as he staggered, and a jerk to the side let her avoid it, though pulled painfully at her stomach.
Of the two of them, he was more the beast in this moment. Stalking, baring teeth, toying with his target. For once in her life, she didn't feel like the predator her race was supposed to be. No, Merry very much felt like prey as he smiled back at her.
And she didn't bother trying to talk to him anymore. Nothing he said was useful, nothing gave her any indication that he felt so much as a shred of remorse for what he was doing. It was worthless, then, to even try. Instead she struggled to get her balance again, hooves steady beneath her, and with eyes still wide and fearful, she lunged forward, taking the opening his stumble provided, to drive her shoulder into his sternum, force him back from her with a smack of a wing against his face.

The sneer returned, an easy veil for his sudden lack of appetite for the fight. This, too, was being taken from him--he felt it--and he felt a sudden and violent pang of envy not just for people like America who reveled in the competence of their own body, but for people like Rep (and other people, though he didn't know it) who reveled in cruelty and pain.
This is the enemy, he thought, and Fiona was impatiently urging him onwards, restless and vicious, but it didn't look like the enemy and maybe if she'd fought back he could have laid into her with all the violence he'd wanted to.
"Next time send in someone who does," he spat, weapon still summoned although he made no move to use it. "Maybe your boyfriend."
He made an exaggerated, theatrical show of stepping aside to give her room to leave. Maybe he would, at least, have the not-so-perfect pleasure of watching her run.
