Had he been a Death guardian, he might have seen fit to ignore Nergui's earlier unspoken refusal of help in the name of her safety or best interests or whatever, but he was not, so he simply stood by and watched what he could see of her and the bear through the storm. When she had taken down the creature completely, he looked away until she was near, the timely desummoning of his whip the only indication that he'd been watching.
