I'm getting the codex. I'm going for a skryre / eshin theme and the things I already have are:

15-ish clanrats
5-ish gutter runners
20-ish storm vermin

Anything I should make sure to get aside from a HQ?

I'm thinking about getting an assassin and an engineer. Maybe some rat ogres too.

I'd say get some ratling guns and attatch them to your infantry regiments. And make sure to get plenty of gutter runners and an assassin if your theme is going to be eshin. Scouts/skirmishers are extremely useful. And if you were going for skyre as well, I'd say take a couple of warlock engineers, and a unit of jezzails.

What you want is 2 units of 20 to 30 clanrats(sorry but it's true for a 1000 point list)Maybe give them Ratling guns.This should allow you to build the rest of the army with a degree of flexibility.Rat swarms are worth their weight in gold.FACT.They look weak but a swarm of just 2 has 10 wounds and is unbreakabe.Also Poison wind is fun.Hope this helps a little.

I plan on getting an engineer, n assassin, a clan rat box, a ratling gun, a warpfire thrower and that rat ogre/giant rat combo box.

hmm Skaven, I never understood how anyone could win a match with them, There magic is supposed to be pretty effective, if not a little random lol. But is there anything that really makes them stand out from others?

Warp lightning cannons,Screaming bells,Warplock engineers,5 diffrent flavours(moulder,Eshin,Skryer,Pestilence and vinila),good movement and funny as hell when things blow themselves up.

i run one unit of 10 jezzets

3 units of clan and palgue monks

2 warp lighting cannons

one ratling gun

for my hq

one warlock master

and 2 assains al weel as one enginer

The fact that they can shoot your units even when they're in close combat. Plus sheer numbers. It's overwhelming. Of course, I've never played a skaven army (unfortunately).

Orcs and Goblins are pretty random, too. Of course, they're funny. Skaven are just fanatics!
