Also, recently some woman beat her toddler in front of me in the store. That was absolutely horrid.

Evil Goth Bunny
I haven't had experience with really, really dreadful cashiers. Although there are quite a few in the shops around here who aren't very good at customer service. The kind who stand behind the till talking to the other cashiers and ignoring the customers who are waiting to pay for their stuff. Then when they finally decide that they can spare a couple of minutes to serve the customer, they act as though it is a huge inconvenience. There was one who continued talking to her friend when I was trying to buy things, and didn't even look at me except when she told me how much to pay. Really, I found that quite a bit more annoying than I should have.

Next time you go there and you see it happen, start asking questions.

Like "is this on sale?"

OR "did that ring at the right price? I thought I saw x price on the tag back there"

Any question where they would actually have to pay attention usually works.

I once asked a wal mart cashier what the rate was for their credit card. For shits and giggles.

The deer in headlights look was priceless.

OK. So I can jump in on child abuse stories! Here's two from my year long stint at a Chuck E. Cheese. ::

Story Number One:: So the cops show up at Chuck E. Cheese. Everyone's trying to figure out what exactly is going on, and calm down all the customers who think something bad might be happening that could effect their kids *which is almost never the case. usually the cops show up because a few rowdy adults but all the people not involved with that family don't have anything to worry about*

So, get this. A woman walked into the restroom to find a woman SLAMMING her two year old daughter against the stall door and telling her to shut up and stop crying. She walked right on out and called the cops. When they arrived the little girl had a huge knot on her head and I believe a black eye. The mother flipped s**t because the cops handed the little girl to the father and told her she COULD not have the kid back and they were taking her in. She insisted that she never did anything to the child, despite there being three witnesses to the abuse including the one who actually called the police.

Story Number Two:: So, the cops get called in. And once again, the customers are freaking out that something may happen to their children and the workers just like knowing what the hell is going on and start asking questions. At the time all I found out was that there was a sixteen or seventeen year old girl up in the sky tubes that refused to come down and it was starting to cause a scene.

The next day I came in to work and asked my manager what exactly was the deal with the girl. So, get this. She was visiting Chuck E. Cheese because she had run away from home and was staying with her Aunt. The girl was being raped by her mother's boyfriend, and had already run away from home once or twice before and the cops had been called on him once to no avail. The mother knew that he was raping her daughter and did nothing about it, so she ran away again. Her aunt decided to take her kid and the girl to Chuck E. Cheese.

Now, one of the friends of the mother's boyfriend saw them there, and called him to say that they found her there. When he came in and she saw him is when she ran up the sky tubes and refused to come down and the cops got called.

These cops, however, did NOT make her go home with the boyfriend and I believe she was able to leave with the aunt. Jesus Christ. I feel bad for that girl.

Teh Savior
if you want to see customer service done right
you should totally go try shopping at home depot
I work at a home depot, and sometimes am a cashier [when needed they drag me out of the back from fixing things] I can say with certainty last night at our store disagree's with that statement.

From Last night example:
We had no help on the floor basically[due to this broken new computer placement system called FAST AKA the dumbest customer service idea ever]; and I told people it would be a few was trying to obtain people to help there were TEN people waiting for some help for about 30 minutes. Some of these items could only be picked up with a forklift due to being entire pallets worth of items. We had no one on the busiest night and I was the ONLY cashier so could not leave. One customer even came inside [mind you this person had only been waiting for 5minutes and seemed perfectly healthy to help himself he had 5,2x6-12 planks,a package of nails its light stuff] and throws a piece of his lumber I told him to calm down then he throw a box of nails at me and the manager noticed and was calling the cops he ran out immediately after he had thrown the box jumped in his truck and drove the hell off. All his remaining items were still outside. My anger was at the highest I think I've had it in years.
After another twenty minutes passes finally three employs came to help load up people, The head cashier finally stops sitting on her butt just chitchatting at returns and told me to go take a break because if someone else had yelled for no reason our thrown something at me last night id probably flip out.

So no as a home depot employ I am saying with 100% certainty that our service is s**t! Also that customers can be the biggest A-holes on earth.

Zi: I hate when that happens seems every time they place me on a register I see this happening once I saw a mother slap the hell out of her kid you could hear a loud pop I wanted call child protection service.

Mostly the place is perfectly safe. But those children, well they're not safe anywhere because it's their parents that are doing the stupid s**t to them and not strangers, you know? But if, say, you take your niece out over there nothing will befall her. 98% of the problems in those stores are caused by the immediate family which is more or less out of the hands of workers.

And... honestly.... really low-grade ingredients. C.E.C. pizza is some of the worst tasting pizza I've ever encountered. And our kitchen staff was mostly lazy children who didn't really care about quality control and wouldn't adhere to the rules so our food especially was bad from time to time. Don't know if it ever got better after I left.

I mean, if someone is being horribly mistreated, I am going to call the police on them,. Especially a chiuld. I cannot bare to see a child mistreated.

There's a difference though between yelling at a kid, and beating a kid. You know?

Outside of verbal abuse, I didn't see much in the three years I worked at toys r us.

My store is behind a chuck e cheese. At least once a month the police are there talking some group of adults. The only time I get to know what is going on is if the security guard for our area comes over to gossip.

Gah, so many people out there don't deserve kids, those stories are horrifying.

Back on topic, the only cashier story I can think of at the moment was a few years back when I went to McDonalds. I rarely eat there, but the group of friends I was with wanted to out of convenience. So I ordered some sort of sub thing, and chose whole wheat bread. I got the strangest look from the kid taking my order, and then he went in the back and you could see/hear the other teenagers working there going "she wants it on whole wheat, who orders whole wheat?" And they kept casting me odd looks.

I was quite flustered by the time I got my sandwich, and it's not like I was ordering something not on the menu, it clearly was an option.

As a cashier, the only reason I will ever place credit cards/money on the counter instead of the person's hand is if they are creepily friendly and would probably get off to...touching my hand (this happens a lot. When I first started, a creepy guy basically grabbed my hand.) or if the person is dirty and smells like manure (which...living in a rural area, happens a lot.)

Going to fast food places, I get a lot of quiet or stressed out cashiers. If it's busy, I completely understand. If the person is shy or obviously new, it's expected.

Also, people blame cashiers WAY TOO MUCH. I got blamed so many times for our card readers not working due to TORNADOES DESTROYING CABLE/INTERNET LINES. According to some of these people, I am a master of airbending and obviously created those tornadoes and made their life a living hell because they cannot pay for their philly cheesesteak despite the two signs blatantly stating we only accept cash at the moment. Seriously, the yelling and anger was sickening. Here these people are complaining that they can't stuff their faces (and saying they wish the tornado hit somewhere else!) while there are thousands of people who won't even eat tonight because of a tornado.
