His eyes caught another pumpkin charm hanging from a nearby limb. Silently and quickly his hand shot out, grabbing it and slipping it into his pocket with the others.

Six more to go. He could do it. He HAD to do it.

s**t. The lights started flashing and Roch grabbed the branch above him, hauling himself up into the tree and sinking into the shadows as well as he could for a reaper that didn't have the shadow ability.

As soon as he dropped down from the branch, though, another one of the little jackers came and saw him. He hissed a curse and grabbed the branch again, hauling himself up another time.

There! He hopped into another safe spot, relaxing and waiting for the "little ones" to get gone. Breathe and focus. Breathe and focus. Six more charms to go, he could do it!

He came out too early, he thought, catching sight of another little one that had caught sight of him. He jumped back into the safety spot, cursing his impatience. He was going to do it. He was determined.

He barely managed to get back into the safety spot nearest him before the big one came rushing for him. Jack, this part of the search was dangerous!

This was how it always went, Roch thought as he crept out of his safety spot only to be caught sight of again. "Jackdammit," he hissed, jumping right back into it. He needed to take a break and let them forget about him for a bit, he decided.

Breathe... in, out, in out, slooooowly... Focus, punk, you had a reason for coming here, right? Roch nodded, letting his mind relax. He had a reason to find the pumpkin charms, something more than just passing a class.

This was all he could do, since he was such a jackin' failure. See? He didn't even say a word as he popped his head out of hiding and found himself staring straight at one of the small ones.

Time to hide again.

A minute passed, two minutes, the boil hidden in the trees was perfectly still. Even his breathing was hard to notice, so slight and silent. His eyes were closed, his mind clearing.

Then he opened his eyes, catching sight of a familiar glint not too far away. This one was his, he thought as he slid out of his hiding spot and grabbed it.

Roch jumped into the nearest safety point, grinning like an idiot as he waited for the big one to roll on by. Jack that was close. He needed to be more careful in the future!

Slowly, carefully, he slipped out of the hiding spot and crept forward, grabbing the next trinket that caught his eye. He was up to eleven! Only four more! He could--

Stepping silently, wincing as a twig snapped under his foot, he moved forward more, grabbing yet another trinket from where it was hidden in a tree root. Three more. Please, jack, just three more...

One of the little ones bumped into the tree beside him, then turned, catching sight of him. Roch didn't bother to curse as he grabbed the nearest tree limb and hauled himself up, making himself comfortable as he waited for it to forget he was there.
