Your journey must have been a long one, to have brought you to the far-flung edge of these herdlands. At first glance, perhaps you won't know that you have entered the territory for one of the larger herds in Soquili. The denizens of the land are peaceful and do not alert immediately to your presence, but do not mistake that they are bound to the alliance herd Tiabi. This particular corner belongs to the Cerezo band, and after another mile or two, you begin to notice the difference.
Human settlements are everywhere, whether you count the small hunter huts as settlements or not, the sign of the hand of man is evident. Agriculture has taken root in this region, with small fields of maize and wheat glowing in the late afternoon light. Progressing further into the territory will have you shadowed by one of the scouts, unless you show some sort of threat... in which case you may become forcefully acquainted with the business end of a human weapon wielded from the back of a winged or fleet-footed warrior human/soquili combo. In either case, you won't go unacknowledged long, for the friendliness of the place is the real defining point. Traders pass through these parts regularly, as do nomads of all makes and models. Seresai, the band's Protector, lifted the ban on outsiders years ago, and has in turn embraced the encroachment of man as a prime way to get ahead of the curve so-to-speak. Some would say it only took one demonstration of the white settlers fire-spewing metal tubes to to convince the wind mare, but those that know her would say with certainty that it was the promise of year-round care for the sick... as well as an abundant food source. In that, she has brought a decidedly feminine touch to the role of Protector, and the Cerezo have flourished under such logic.
Another readily evident change is the partnerships formed between young human warriors and certain soquili. In specifically designed fields, you can see young mares and stallions relentlessly sparring with each other, lithe human warriors clinging to their backs and practice weapons while trying to turn the tide of the spar for their four-footed partners. Yells and whoops echo through the valley as do cat calls and shrill whinnies of victory. It is a lively sight, and one that brings pride to the eyes of the older white wind stallion overseeing the practice. He'd been the last to accept the changes made by his daughter Seresai (especially the introduction of mandated human/soquili sparring ) but after the vicious guerrilla war fought with the skinwalkers Seethe and Amaroq, he had come around. It was hard to argue with results, after all, and even without using the white man's firepower, the stone and metal tipped arrows of the native fired from the backs of airborne soquili had proven particularly devastating to their enemies. And this stallion, Crousader, was definitely in the business of devastating enemies, you can tell by the way he carries himself under his old armor.
Moving on, you spot another group of youngsters being entertained by the band's resident eccentric. Toujours is at his best again, teaching the youngsters what it means to be important but not too important, as well as instilling some much needed discipline for the most precocious of the lot. As always, his antics serve to teach tolerance and understanding, as well as remind those youngsters too smart to know right from left that there are still things in this world that defy logic.
Nearby, an old Elder rests in the shade of the Cerezo's signature tree, a bundle of young foals curled against his side while he sings to them. Flame may not be able to see much these days (a fact made clear by the blindfold drawn across his eyes to hide the nasty scar ) but his gift to see with more than his eyes is still alive and well. As you pass, he takes note of your presence with a slight nod, the babies at his side sighing in contentment while his lullaby continues without pause. Perhaps you are struck by the presence of the fiery stallion, or just like his song, either way you stop long enough to hear the end, then move on.
Along the way, you are met by an immense painted stallion. Easily towering over you, his power is in no way diminished by age or being 'just a regular.' This is Blais, the former Protector, and you wonder for a moment what might have caused such a personality to relinquish a position he was so clearly suited for... until you catch sight of the look in his eyes as he gazes from you towards the bundle of foals gathered about Flame. There is a softness and a yearning in that look, and you realize there is far more to this stallion then brawn and the ability to dominate either by force or will. He's a family stallion now, and appears to be taking to the role like a fish to water, but that doesn't stop him from meeting you himself, assessing you with a look, and moving past with a courteous nod. Still a protector, old habits must die hard.
Before you can take another step, however, the ground beneath you shakes as an explosion rocks the area. The foals suddenly burst awake, but are shushed by Flame and the presence of their father Blais, who settles down with them. You are not so easily settled, though, so you turn to find the source of the sound... only to come face to face with two soot-covered soquili and three arguing humans. "Lord's Balls Ellie! I TOLD you that much pressure would set'er off!" One of the humans, a white male, declares... wiping his face with a rag. The other humans, a white female and a Kawani male, trade looks before the woman retorts. "Shove off Fitz, YOU are the one who swore up and down a little extra pressure wouldn't hurt! Or are you going to give up on making a machine that will help us power that sawmill I'm spending an AWFUL LOT OF TIME building?" Next to the woman, a flaxen chestnut mare (or she once was, at the moment she's nearly black) whickers her agreement. The man, Fitz, regards the mare coolly for a moment and throws his hands up. "Point, you have one. And don't you be getting in on this Wildfire! I don't need to know what your saying to know you're laughing at me!" At that the mare whickered again, a very laughter-like sound, and is swatted with the tail of the other soquili, a fiery pelted stallion by the name of Killian.
Before the argument can escalate further, another pair of soquili pass by, and regard you and the bickering engineers with a coordinated pair of snorts. One of them, a flashy palomino paint, flicks his tail and tilts in such a way so the golden trinkets adorning his mane and ear twinkle just-so in your general direction. "Really Wile, should you really be doing that? Your hair may not recover." Sandsablaze says, his tone making sure sure everyone knows he's only teasing. Unlike the young stallion at his side (who happens to be Wildfire's younger brother Firewind) Sandi was well aware that without Wildfire's insistence years ago that the herd move to a new location, they would have been in dire straights indeed. As for Firewind, he does think Wile abusing her lovely hair is a tragic shame, and he says so with a sad sign of agreement with his friend. Glaring at them both, Wildfire shoos them off with the threat of smearing her sooty self against them, then looks at you as if seeing you for the first time.
"Welcome stranger! Sorry about the noise and the mess... and probably all sorts of other offensive things you've seen if you've gotten this far! If you're looking for Seresai, she's due back soon, but until then, please make yourself at home!"

Protector: Seresai
In line with the Cerezo's history of only having a Protector, this position holds the most authority within the band. He/she is directly responsible for all matters of defense, as well as most domestic matters that affect the band as a whole. It is an active role, and generally requires the soquili holding it to be young and active. Successors are chosen relatively young, and are groomed for this position, but the final ascension to Protector is still a democratic process, with the whole band voting yay or nay on a new one.
Alpha: Flame
Largely a position of trust, the Alpha is less of a commander and more of a wise and venerable adviser. Likewise, this position is usually held by an Elder, and is preferably someone that most of the herd feels comfortable confiding in. A lot of the time, former Protectors who have reached Elderhood later become Alpha, but that doesn't have to be the case.
Advisers: Toujours, Crousader, Blais
Soquili within the band who have had a lot of experience may be called upon to advise a young Protector in matters that go beyond his/her experience. These soquili do not necessarily hold any special rank within the band, but they are usually treated with great respect by the rest of the band because of their years of service to the band.
Engineers: Wildfire, Killian, Fabio
The engineers, or "Tinkerers" of Cerezo are definitely treated a bit differently. With minds that immediately set them apart from their fellows, these soquili enjoy studying the world around them and devising ways to live harmoniously with the world while reaching the band's goals. They are responsible for reporting weather changes, unusual fires, changes to the human settlements, and maintaining records.
Scouts/Warriors: Manny, Jose, Burn, Ajax, Bonfire, Soulfire, Hunter, Shishio Gen
A highly versatile position, every soquili in the Cerezo has learned the basics of self defense and wilderness tracking, leaving only those who excelled at their studies to pursue them full time. Many have chosen only to patrol, shying away from conflict, while others prefer to actively hone their skills against each other and any unwelcome intruders them come across. On their own, they do not behave as a military unit, but in an emergency, their training comes in full-force under the command of the Protector.
Healers: Amarinne, Tiarnan, Dream, Tylen
Lead by the oldest Healer, these soquili are given virtually free rein in any situation. There is a very old and very sacred trust held by the Cerezo band and their small group of Healers, and as such it is unlikely you will ever hear of anyone speaking out against them for any reason. It is also important to note that just because a soquili can heal (whether with a horn or with herbs) that does not mean they will be welcome as a Healer. Admission to this revered circle is reserved only for the dedicated, with the leader believing skill only goes as far as the desire to help.
Crafters: Firewind, Sandsablaze, Antigua, Alarn
Multi-talented and mult-faceted, those who find that they don't fit with any of the other jobs usually embrace their own private niche within the crafters. Ranging from those who help the humans with transport, to those who seek out their own baubles and fashion them into all sorts of accessories and tools, the Cerezo crafters are well known within the Kawani as one of the oldest contributors to the trading posts.
Nomads: Desperado, Nesrin
Wanderers tried and true, the nomads of Cerezo come and go with impunity (or so they would like to believe) but most contribute to the band in some way... whether through military aid, information, or crafting.

It is ironic that the wandering of one lone stallion, the adoption of another young colt by a human girl, and the trauma suffered by another stallion would lead to the events that brought the Cerezo Soquili together so many years ago. Perhaps it was providence, a sign that the Great Spirits wanted this group together, or just a series of coincidences that led to something greater.
Whatever the case may be, the history of the Cerezo is a complicated one, and is passed down verbally and through a type of hieroglyphics painted on the walls of a cave in their new territory. Knowing History, the Alpha and Protector agree, keeps the mistakes of the past from repeating in the future. A great deal of time is spent on the education of each foal born into the fold to ensure they are fully aware of their origins, and later, of the follies of their elders. Only one soquili has appeared to escape the blunt portrayal in the histories... and is appropriate that this history also begins with him.
In days long past, when the numbers of the rare horses known as Soquili were few, and the bonds between them and the Kawani People who revered them were even fewer, a small golden basket was found by a young Kawani maiden. The girl, a halfblood daughter of a huntsman and a shipwrecked European woman, took in the basket first out of duty, but after the young foal emerged and the girl's father died, she raised him out of love and loneliness. Over the years, colt and girl grew inseparable. The girl, Celei, eventually found her calling in life as an apprentice to the Kawani's eldest medicine woman ... with her golden colt Otaikimmio'tokaan ever at her side.
One day, however, Tai (as the colt was often called for short) was out exploring the great Clearings on his own when he came across others his age. Excited, he tried to join them in their play, but was quickly shifted aside in favor of other young colts when his quirky 'human' ways became tiresome. Not one to be counted out, Tai returned home and attempted to communicate to Celei that he wanted to learn to act like those other colts... but body language and well timed whinnies can only go so far, and the colt was left disappointed.
After about a week went by, wherein Tai refused to go back to the Clearings, until Celei grew tired of the colts moping, and she decided to take him with her up into the mountains where he could help her carry back some herbs the elder medicine woman needed. Initially, Tai balked, he was enjoying the immersion into self pity, but eventually his better nature won out and he followed the young native out.
Some time passed, but Tai wasn't bored. The mountains were a wondrous place, and he took his time exploring every available nook and cranny until his nose hit something warm and wet. Rearing back, he whickered the 'come here' code to Celei, and stood staring curiously at the pile of fiery reds and golds half hidden in a bramble bush. As Celei approached, she did something unexpected the second she took a look at his face. Rags came out, as well as the oilskin canteen bottle she carried water in, and suddenly both were being used to clean his muzzle. Bewildered, it was only when the rags came away when he tossed his head that he realized the 'wet' from earlier was blood. Nostrils flaring, he forcibly drew Celei's attention to the red and gold pile, which he now realized was a still-living animal of some kind, and let the human get to work the instant she realized what he was trying to tell her.
In the end, both human and colt ended up bringing home a fair bit more then a satchel of fresh herbs. The pile had turned out to be a young Soquili stallion by the name of Flame, and he was in desperate need of help. Never being one to let another suffer, Celei and Tai struggled to get the larger soquili home, eventually fashioning a sort of travois that both Celei and her colt could pull.
After getting him home, both human and soquili set about the arduous task of nursing the young stallion back to health, both becoming acquainted with the fallen soquili's familiar Gully in the process. It was Celei who was on watch when Flame finally opened his eyes, and if he was startled to be inside a human's teepee, he didn't try to make a fuss of it. When Tai arrived, however, the stallion did attempt to get some answers from the colt... which only ended up confusing them both as Tai's naivety about being a soquili became glaringly obvious.
As Flame healed and he got to know both Celei and Tai better, the stallion decided that besides owing a life-debt to them both, he also owed it to Tai as an adult to help the colt truly understand his heritage and his 'people,' such that they were. Many years of teaching would be in order.

Primary Location
Where once the Cerezo had roamed at the foothills of a great mountain range, these days, the seasons will find them in a far more hospitable habitat. Spanning hundreds of acres, the band's new territory encompasses three major ecosystems and has enough precipitation year long to maintain a thriving plainsland, forest, and cavern system. Starting high in the distant mountains, the groundwater that flows from the snowmelt joins the coastal rainstorms to flood the lower plains and keep the forests thick and verdant along the edges. Hundreds of species also call this area home, ranging from a small herd of buffalo, to the tiniest song birds who.
In the summers, the weather is wet, rainy, and hot... with humidity nearing 80% on some of the worst days. Winters are temperate, with a light snow falling at the higher altitudes, and a cold wind and frozen ground abundant throughout the rest. Fall isn't as pronounced as it is in some areas of the continent, but there are some trees who put on their yearly show despite the lack of a deep, bone chilling winter. Spring, however, always puts on quite the show as it leads into summer, more then making up for a lackluster fall.
Outlying Territory
Some members of the Cerezo range as far as the highest mountains, the deepest seas, and the driest deserts, with the mountains seeing the most activity of the three.

Within the Cerezo, there are two distinct families that serve as the 'root' of the band. The Fire Horse family, lead by their patriarch Flame, bring an infusion of family and cohesion to the band. The Sky Horse family, led by their patriarch Crousader, traces their lineage back to the distant lands of the Far East by way of Ancient Rome, and they bring a strong sense of pride and military skill to the band.

Name: Toujours
About: An incredibly eccentric soquili, Toujours came to find his way into the lands of the Cerezo via mysterious means. He quite literally just showed up one day, bypassing the border guards and hardly raising an alarm until he was found eating grass near the band's main water source. Luckily, he wasn't a threat ... even if it was decided he was pretty weird. Well known for talking to inanimate objects (and getting a response) TJ has an odd view of the world, but his skill as both an educator and s healer is well worth the random spoutings of nonsense. He adheres to an monotheistic religion of his own making, calling his deity the "One God." It is a complicated faith, where he is both the sole Priest and Eternal Student. His primary edicts are tolerance, even of monsters.

Name: Dream
About: The first usdia to make her home with the Cerezo, she is doted upon by everyone in the band... and has become a bit precocious as a result. Meddlesome and motherly, Dream's favorite past-time is match-making, and she does enjoy a reputation for being able to spot a good or bad relationship a mile away. A member of the crafters, Dream gives advice to young stallions and mares looking for trinkets of affection to give to their beloveds in the band's trading post at the main Kawani Village. She also has a knack for sales pitches, and has been coaching the young mares and stallions of the engineering section of the band in selling their ideas to the Protector and the rest of the herd.
