New topic!
Okay, I want opinions from you girls on the age of consent. Where I live, it's 16 years old, in other places around the world it's something like 21.
Discuss: -What should the legal age be? -Why do we have such a large variations of legal ages around the world? -Does having a legal age help/hinder our society? -What about other legal ages? Where should sex fall relative to drinking, driving and voting?

What should the legal age be? Here it's 16. But I don't believe that every 16 year old that has sex really knows what they're in for. A lot of them don't think of the consequences(i.e getting pregnant, STD/STI) and sometimes a lot of them are pressured into it by their peers. Simply because "having sex is cool!". Personally, from my past experience with this, I would say 17-19 would be more appropriate for consent.
Why do we have such a large variations of legal ages around the world? My guess is government. There is no universal government to make these decisions. And since every government is different, they're all going to see things differently. Does having a legal age help/hinder our society? Not really. I see so many kids from 13 and up getting drunk and doing drugs at parties. Simply because it's available and "everyone else is doing it!", when in truth everyone isn't. I personally think it does both. It sets a guideline that we can follow. Some people choose to while others do not.
What about other legal ages? Consent for sex/drivers licence is 16, marriage/voting is 18 and drinking is 19. Anything else I really can't think of at the moment.
Where should sex fall relative to drinking, driving and voting? Ok this is what I think. Drivers = 16 Sex = 17-18 Voting = 18 Marriage = 18-19 Drinking =16-19 (but like the European way, i.e wine and light liquor)

What should the legal age be? I don't know that a specific age is that great of an idea, to be honest. What's the difference between an 18-year-old and a 17-year-11-month-30-day-old? Going beyond that, there are some people under 18 that are still mature enough for sex, and some people older than that who aren't.
Why do we have such a large variations of legal ages around the world? Different cultures and expectations. If the life expectancy is low, getting married and having kids at a young age is expected. If societies have different views on maturity, they'll have different ideas for age of consent.
Does having a legal age help/hinder our society? A bit of both. On one hand, a child/teenager may not be physically or emotionally mature enough to do certain things. On the other hand, something being taboo increases the appeal.

-What should the legal age be? I agree with the current one of 18 -Why do we have such a large variations of legal ages around the world? Laws are decided by vote so it depends on the beliefs of the mass living in the area -Does having a legal age help/hinder our society? Help. I like the idea that people think twice before doing certion things because of legal age. My daughter may have sex in her teens but because of said laws I can know her chances are less of being taken advantage of by a adult -What about other legal ages? Where should sex fall relative to drinking, driving and voting? I think its retarded drinking out votes every thing in age. Sex can distroy your life just as fast and should be treated as such. Now I'm not saying raise the laws on it but still. My husband is 20 and by law he can have kids, buy a house, smoke, and join the army but he can't drink..

-What should the legal age be? so we're talking about sex here? call me naive, but i didn't know there was a "legal age" -Why do we have such a large variations of legal ages around the world? i don't know. because different cultures believe different things, i suppose. -Does having a legal age help/hinder our society? i don't think it matters. it gives you a rule. now it's up to you to decide whether or not you actually follow it. i mean, what are they gonna do? see two teenagers going at it then interrupt and say, "excuse me, but just how old are you two?" -What about other legal ages? Where should sex fall relative to drinking, driving and voting? here to drive it's just gone from eighteen to seventeen. i like actually like the idea of seventeen better than sixteen. and voting, idk. i think the voting age should be more like thirteen, honestly. early teenagers have a lot of opinion in politics, but we don't get a say because we're too young. drinking i think she be eighteen instead of twenty-one.

Well here, it's 18. I agree with it because I think 16 is too early to consent to sex. 18, you're considered an adult, so if you mess up, it's on you.

AThousandLullabies i don't think it matters. it gives you a rule. now it's up to you to decide whether or not you actually follow it. i mean, what are they gonna do? see two teenagers going at it then interrupt and say, "excuse me, but just how old are you two?"
No, of course it's easy to break this law without anyone knowing. But say for example, where I live the legal age is 16. That means if a 16 year old has sex with a 15 year old and say, the 15 year old's parents find out, (even if it's consensual, even if it's the 15 year old's idea or whatever) the 16 year old can be charged with statutory rape.

You know, I'm going to be controversial and say there should be a different limit for males and females. I say 15 for boys, and 16 for girls. I think boys reach sexual maturity faster.
This rule has ruined some lives, but all in all I think it encourages responsible behavior. However, if the age is set too high the waiting will be too difficult and no one will care about the law.

And for those of you who don't know, if you are charged with statutory rape you must register as a sex offender for the rest of your life. It is a very serious punishment that is meant only for people who have truly taken advantage of a young person. If the age is too high, some people end up with very serious consequences for trying to have sex with their boyfriend or girlfriend.

But girls in general mature faster emotionally. Surely you should be both emotionally and sexually mature to handle the pressures that come with sex?

If your old enough to have sex and brake a law your old enough to deal with punishments I think getting a DUI and having under aged sex are two completely different things. I hate it when people use that faulty logic. Use your head, just because its a law does it automatically make it right? A 16 year old getting slammed with a punishment meant for older men/women who actually take advantage of young people is ridiculous. You mean to tell me that a 16 year old boy deserves to be labeled as a sex offender for the rest of his life for having sex with his 15 year old girlfriend? Ridiculous, don't you ever compare something like this to as something as horrible as getting a DUI. You have a brain, use it dammit.

Why on Earth would you base logic and personal beliefs on them???? Think and use your own brain. A person can kill another person and get off with four years of jail time. Then you have another person planning murder and going away for the rest of his life without even harming a fly. These are only two examples but there are many more. Sex and a DUI, really?
