Kind of worries me that now that both Roddenberrys are gone, the series will totally at the mercy of the studio. They'll do anything they please with it now, and probably destroy it. I'm afraid it won't have anybody to defend it's integrity any more.
As to why the original series only lasted 3 seasons: The opinion of those on the show seems to be that NBC hated it. They stuck it in horrible time slots and totally failed to understand what they had. I think the show was too far ahead of its time to be properly appreciated by the networks back in the 1960's. I remember reading how Gene took the show around trying to sell it & had gone to CBS, who told him, "We don't need another science-fiction show--we have "Lost in Space". gonk
Mind you, I don't think NBC has learned all that much since then. They have the Sci-Fi channel...and what do they put on it? Horror, stupid, cheapo monster flicks, and WRESTLING. scream

I have a friend who is a special effects artist and this movie was of the movies he worked on. He is very critical of the movies that the studio puts out and he thought this one turned out to be better than he expected it to be. I have yet to see the movie. I typically go see his movies and then give my opinion or ask him questions regarding the making of the movie because, well, he knows. I'll try and find some stuff out for you all.

I have seen the movie, and I honestly liked it. I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was quite young, and this movie makes for a good 'what if'. The characters are well done, and while no one can ever replace the originals, they do a good job of keeping them to character. I recommend at least giving it a chance. It might surprise you^^

Hinote no Tenshi I have seen the movie, and I honestly liked it. I've been a fan of Star Trek since I was quite young, and this movie makes for a good 'what if'. The characters are well done, and while no one can ever replace the originals, they do a good job of keeping them to character. I recommend at least giving it a chance. It might surprise you^^ I felt the same way. There were only a couple moments where I was "no way that would happen" but it didn't ruin the movie for me. For the most part, I was impressed with their treatment with space travel and the way space was treated in terms of special effects. It felt ten times more real than any Star Wars movie, that's for sure. I was also pleased how about some of the hidden jokes they put in there. Stuff only Trekkies would know. I liked the characters a lot. It really felt like the majority of them captured the "spirit" of their older counterparts. Oh and as much as I don't like spoilers, I just want to say that they are NOT trying to remake the original series. Things have changed in the movie so this is an entirely new Star Trek.

I'm not as avid a Trekkie as my mother, but I have seen all the episodes including the classic Star Trek, Next Generation, Voyager, DS9, and the one with Scott Bakula (what's it called? Enterprise?). I've also seen all the movies, except this new one.
It took me a long time to warm up to each different series, it just didn't seem like Star Trek and I didn't think that they should use that name. Eventually though, I began to see each one as it's own show, not just an extension of the original. I think I'll probably go through the same process with this new movie. xd
Of course, I don't think I'll ever think Kirk/Spock/Bones etc, and see these new faces, I'll always think of Shatner/Nimoy/Kelley first!

As one who is semi-familiar with Star Trek, but not really a "Trekkie" I enjoyed the movie. I caught the references to the original characters, but I probably would have appreciated them more if I was more into the original series. It was entertaining, to say the least.

I actually liked the movie granted it didn't go with canon, but it was really cool. I'm just tired of ToS and Next Gen movies why can't they do DS9 or Voyager.

StateAlchemist Natsu I actually liked the movie granted it didn't go with canon, but it was really cool. I'm just tired of ToS and Next Gen movies why can't they do DS9 or Voyager. DS9 crew was either killed off or split up across the galaxy and Voyager ended with low ratings so they won't consider making a movie for it.
I've watched the movie now. I think it was a good movie, but considering it was plugged as a prequel, it completely re-writes the Star Trek story.

I loved the new movie. The drama, action, and humor was all great. The only problem I had was the whole traveling back in time/2 Spocks in one space thing. But I guess in sci-fi stranger things have happened.
I'm 23 and only seen 1 or 2 episodes of the original series. I'm a huge Next Gen fan!

I'm pretty much nothing...I'm a fan of The Next Generation...so I thought the movie would be a bust, but I really did love it and can't wait to have it...
PPL have to understand that this is an alternate reality...so if they made any mistakes with the characters, it's an alternate reality. They can do whatever they want, even Spock be a couple with Kirk ((yes.))
and if ppl complain about real stuff like a black hole can suction an explotion...remember, it's just a movie.

I grew up watching the original series. I'd rush home as a kid and do my homework and sit in front of the tv and watch Star Trek. Honestly when I saw this new movie...I was BLOWN AWAY!!! My sons were at a Braves game and I sent them a text message saying, "Star Trek is FREAKING AWESOME!" I was floored and fell in love all over again with Bones. Does anyone else find their pulse racing when looking at Karl Urban?! WOW! heart ~insert swooning sounds here!~ heart Anyway, I loved the new movie and am so glad that we have more years to watch following movies on a show that is my all time favorite. I still watch the original series and the other Star Trek series and movies that came after. Well, all except for Enterprise. Never coulds get into it and still don't like it. But I'm gearing for more movies and can't wait to see the next one. 3nodding
