Who DOESN'T love the USS Defiant?
The think looks cool, outguns ships many times its size, AND has a cloaking device. The only thing it can't do is explore-wait, they used it in the Gamma Quadrant as an Explorer, despite it being the least-Explorer-capable ship in current production.
That having been said, my priorities are different than Starfleet's priorities. I think the switch to larger and larger ships is not cost-productive for Starfleet.
That's why, every time they switch to a bigger size ship, they make FEWER ships, by definition. (Each ship ties up a shipyard during its construction. A larger ship either takes longer or ties up more resources until the ship is built.) Often, a smaller ship can be BUILT faster than a larger ship can be RECONDITIONED. Also, the investment in FEW ships is more at risk. After the Borg Massacre at Wolf 359, Starfleet ended up bringing in ships that were slated for decomissioning, and slapped together "the Frankenstein fleet" of ships from available parts-ugly, inefficient things. If more resources had been allocated to smaller ships, they still would have had many that were not in the battle.
So, I say that the construction of the Intrepid-class (Voyager) and the Nova-class (Equinox) were steps in the right direction. The older Miranda class ships and the Excelsior class ships are still in use, despite being really old. Why?
A) There are not enough ships of comparable size and function to replace them.
B) They are efficient in use of resources. An Excelsior makes a FINE patrol ship in situations where a Galaxy-class ship is not anticipated. Several Excelsiors can be more places than their weight in Galaxy-class ships could be. Remember the tachyon defense grid? More, smaller ships means that's a LOT easier. You could always put the warships BEHIND the grid...
Consider what replaced what. The Excelsior was replaced with the Galaxy, which was replaced with the Sovereign. However, the Excelsiors are more efficient in use of resources in situations where outright warfare are not expected. When war is expected, the Akira is a fighter-carrier, the Prometheus, Steamrunner and Defiant are warships, and the Sovereign is an all-purpose ship. With the exception of the Defiant, they're just getting bigger and bigger.
However, with no war present, are the only OTHER types of ships going to be boxy freighters?
NO.
The ancient Oberth science vessels are being replaced with the new Nova science vessels, which makes sense. The all-purpose smallest ships are now the Miranda (ancient), the Excelsior (outdated), and the Intrepid.
I think the Nova and Intrepid should be in mass-production to replace completely the Excelsior and Miranda classes, in numbers far exceeding them.
The Miranda, Oberth and Constellation classes have been used as personnel carriers and personal transports for VIPs. That makes sense for the Miranda (crew needs: small, ship size, small, current top speeds, fairly fast), but not for the others. The Oberth is FAR too slow to be practical. A runabout can outpace one in a flat race anytime. The Constellation class is fast, but LARGE. Unless you're transferring a large cargo or a large number of crew, it's like using an 18-wheel truck to deliver something that fits in a van. You tied up hundreds of crewman for this as well.
So, a Constellation class ship is a good choice for sending important cargo across large distances-when you don't expect it to see combat (if you do, a Nebula-class or Galaxy-class ship would be a better choice.)
What ships do I like?
The Defiant The Nova The Intrepid
I see these ships as the future of Starfleet-unless another war arrives. (Then, obviously, the warships I mentioned will form the backbone of the fleet-plus the Defiant.)
