I probably did a few sketches of bodies on the first day, and copied and knee up picture of a model from a magazine. Some doodling was done with this style I've been experimenting with. Did serious some serious shading too.

On the second day was just one or two more torsos with intense shading going on. Used 2B, 4B, and HB pencils. To achieve a high contrast in the studies. This will be my first time taking basic units seriously, using a pencil as a measuring tool.

Third day... I found some colleagues sleeping during lunchtime, so I quickly sketched them cause they moved quite a lot. Did a sketch of a picture of a statue (Greek Statue of Hercules). Some blind contours was done as well.

Note1:Each of the pieces took no less than 50 mins to complete, no more than hours.
Note2:I compiled my first week's artworks, there wasn't as much as this week's. (Probably means I'm slacking off).

Found an old piece in photobucket, re-worked it. Legs are a bit short, didn't realise it till it was too late.

Hands Study.
Because I know I am only good at copying in actual size, I decided to do something about it. Forced myself to squeeze everything into one page and thus resizing the images (which I'm really bad at).

As a result, some hands are off, (and I'm still really confused where I've gone wrong -edits edits-). Help would be appreciated smile

Head "Study"
These are the first few attempts. Still have a long way to go cause after these, couldn't figure out where the skulls are.

Today's Homework is to:
Identify the muscles on the back, sides and front of the torso.

Later on: Anatomy study. I'm not working enough!

(Omg, i just noticed. I wrote BICEPS when I'm suppose to write DELTOID. Friggin tired... zzzzzzzzzzzz)
User Image

I've been TRYING to work on anatomy in the afternoon, some heads in the late evenings followed by some more anatomy in the night.

Maybe a little burnout, cause they did turn out like crap. The good news, I think I understand heads a little better now. Much more wider at side view, with a gradient going inwards from the forehead to chin.

I notice also, that my accuracy and precision is going off, when copying with two windows placed together, my lineworks are always higher than the original, not to mention flatter. Instead of drawing the lines exactly I've been just drawing the same line but at a different angle and length.

I think, beginning to draw bodies using base shapes is great, but it's influencing other fields... can't really copy things that well now. Like when I try to draw something exactly, I can't focus on the lines and duplicate them. I also use less and less negative spaces, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

Good, maybe, if i'm focusing more on the base shapes (and knowing more of body anatomy), bad, because...(accuracy, blah blah).

I'll work on blind contours and keep practicing the basics. Negative spaces, basic units, etc etc etc...

Few things on my mind too... professionals take at least 3-4 years to hone their skills. The human anatomy (muscle, skeletons and all), background, cg colouring, painting like cg, clothing, mecha... Can I even do all those in 3-4 year's time? @_@; Seems kinda overwhelming. It's too short (for those who feel that they have much to learn), yet too long (for those who are desperately trying to improve).

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

as a casual artist, I have to say I absolutely admire all the hard work you're putting into this.

keep going, you're doing so well. <3

(also, I share the love of painterly, semi-realistic stlyes you do. lovelovelove.)

Hm, figure drawing isn't about copying lines. It's about seeing form and line in a way that expresses what's going on. You're not copying so much as trying to understand and then put forth what you're understanding. As you understand more actual anatomy, you will rely less on copying and rely more on what you know.

I would suggest mixing it up some though so you don't bore yourself. You can learn things that will help your figures a lot from drawing inanimate objects.

You're right, i guess eventually the boredom kicks in and makes drawing more of a chore than something interesting. I'll take your advice and see what happens.

Did some art fix for the overly broad back.

Do let me know if there are errors in the anatomy...

3-6.11.08
Been doing at least an hour of Hand Studies during this period of time, and on the last day did an hour or more of clothing study.
The next two days were pretty much event-less, bought a new faster pc that opens Photoshop much much faster (10 seconds as compared to 3-5 minutes), and just today, a photo reference book with a lot of people and poses.
(Does that mean I will soon have a comic coming soon? =o)

7-8.11.08: null

I only did this, placed reference pic on left, canvas on right, started drawing.
Then place image under the lines to see how accurate I was.
Red lines depict the muscle structure for the torso.

The new pc screen skews the height of images, so i don't know how accurate i am.

I want to thank you for the encouragement! Being a casual means there's no pressure from fellow students, so we tend to gt lazy after a while... XD I'm currently looki g for someone to draw with actually so it's not as lonely ><;

Painterly styles are cool, the way they paint on youtube XD just keep adding colours and keep fixing as they go along...

Muscle identification, assessment by Espiritual

spend an hour doing figure studies, only 2.

The above two was done in an hour. Tried to be less rigid, and tried to draw the rough shape instead of copying lines. It felt weird, but I suppose the overall result is okay.

User Image
Decided to do a little painting study too. This would be my second attempt (the first being the painting of the clouds).

(It's actually 11:13pm now. Not 10:33 anymore -laughs-).

I drew a model and added the muscles to the entire figure.

13.11.08
Sketched a pose from reference.

14.11.08
Instead of drawing today, I dedicated the afternoon into designing.

Design: did you make the shapes? If not, you shouldn't use them without permission. If you did, good job. Like the colours, too.

How about you take a break from studies and do some freehand? Just to see where you are at. It is also important to see things in your mind without reference, because you can't always get a ref. for everything.

The brushes are free for personal use haha, and so far I haven't shown off the art anywhere but in this thread. It's more of a fun stuff (and yeah it's fun!)

As for freehand, I did try it out, nothing has changed so far so I'm kind of disappointed. Still make the same mistakes despite the few studies I have made.
