The closest I've ever been to one was ConComics 2008 at Expo Guadalajara... but I was too busy with my college projects to drag my a** over there sweatdrop
The second closest thing I've ever been was the FIL. It's a HUEG book fair almost as big and crowded as the Comiket (I ******** you not!), and one of the back alleys just happens to sell anime stuff.

Otakon is in my city... so I'll be going this year. But I didn't know what anime was until a bit ago.
