If everything goes according to plan, I will be moving out of my parents' place and into an apartment. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. It'll be the first time I'll be living on my own (or at least away from my parents).

When I informed my parents, they were all excited the night of. But then yesterday (the day after my announcement), they were all "Are you sure you don't want to look at other apartments?" and "You don't have to go with the first one you've seen." I had to keep telling them I've already been looking online. Plus I've seen other apartments through the places my friends (or friends of friends) have lived. So, I'm not basing it off a completely blank slate.

Then my Mom had to go "It doesn't seem worth it to move out, if you're just going to a room that's basically the same size." Sure, the bedroom will be the same size... but I'll actually get to have spots in the rest of the apartment that's actually for my stuff. I won't get the same feeling I have with my parents place where my stuff is "clutter" to them.

I also had the discussion where it felt like their recent conversations was along the lines of "Oh, we're getting closer to retirement age, so you better get a move on." They responded with "Oh, we didn't mean you had to find a place right away." Right. Because your words previously indicated the opposite.

I told them this was a step in the right direction. And I didn't want to turn my back on a great opportunity that fitted so nicely with what I needed.

I'll be roommating with a friend of my best friend. I've only met him technically a couple times but I got good vibes from him and the place. That's why I made my decision so quickly (and not because my best friends were saying I should go with it).

If this roommate thing doesn't work out, then I can find a place of my own. Truly on my own.

But this will at least give me a step towards that. I've always lived with my parents, so I'm used to there being someone around. So, this will give me the chance to be away from the parents at first without losing the comfort zone of someone being near by.

There's a part of me that feels like that whole conversation last night was their flailing of realizing they're actually going to have an empty nest. And they're not ready to accept the fact despite encouraging me to do so.
